Anthropic Interview Process for International Candidates: What to Prepare, and the Visa Questions to Raise
An Anthropic interview tests depth and judgment, and for OPT and H-1B candidates the visa conversation is part of the process. Here is how to prepare for both.

The Anthropic interview process is set role by role. Anthropic's own careers page says interviews run over Google Meet, that technical roles use live coding tools such as Colab and CodeSignal, and that it sponsors visas and green cards "for eligible roles". Beyond that, your job posting and your recruiter are the authoritative description, not a forum thread. If you are on OPT, STEM OPT or H-1B, preparing for an Anthropic interview means two things: preparing for depth, judgment and clear writing, and raising four visa questions early. Is this role open to sponsorship? How would the H-1B timing work for your status? What job title and wage level would the employer file? Is green-card sponsorship part of the picture?
Status line, as of mid-October 2026: wage-weighted H-1B selection is in effect (since 2026-02-27). FY2028 registration dates are not announced. The $100,000 H-1B entry restriction was extended by Proclamation 11069 to 2027-09-21, but the fee is blocked by two federal court orders. A separate $103,265 cap-subject fee is only proposed.
What the Anthropic interview process actually looks like (and where to verify it)
Anthropic posts open roles on its careers page, and each posting describes the team, the responsibilities and what the team is looking for. As of October 2026, that page also says:
- All interviews are conducted over Google Meet, across time zones.
- Technical roles use live coding tools such as Colab and CodeSignal.
- "We sponsor visas and green cards for eligible roles."
- "We don't currently offer internships," which matters if you hoped for a CPT internship.
- Most staff are in the Bay Area and come to the office regularly; some who live further away come in one week a month.
- You can re-apply after 12 months, or sooner if your experience materially changes.
The page publishes no fixed sequence of rounds, and stages vary by team, so this guide does not invent one. Instead, ask in the first recruiter call:
- What stages does the loop for this role include, and roughly how long does it take?
- Is there a take-home or timed coding assessment for this role?
- Who will I meet: engineers, researchers, a hiring manager?
- Is the role tied to a specific office, or is remote work possible?
The last one matters more for you than for a US citizen: the work location goes on the Labor Condition Application and sets the prevailing wage the employer must meet.
The AI-tool question deserves its own answer
Anthropic publishes its own guidance on candidates' AI use. In short: write your application's first draft yourself and use Claude to refine it; using it to research the company and practise answers is encouraged; take-home assessments and live interviews are done without AI assistance unless Anthropic says otherwise. Read the current version, and if a stage is unclear, ask the recruiter in writing. Our guide to take-home assessment policies on AI coding tools covers how policies differ across employers.
How to prepare for an AI lab interview as an international candidate
Prepare by competency, weighted by what the job posting emphasises.
1. Technical depth for your track
- Software engineering: clean, tested code under time pressure, data structures you can explain aloud, and debugging unfamiliar code. If English is not your first language, practise narrating your reasoning while you type.
- ML and infrastructure: distributed training, inference serving, evaluation pipelines and performance debugging in large systems.
- Research: walk through your own papers or projects at whiteboard level, defend design choices and say plainly what did not work. Our guide to research scientist roles and H-1B sponsorship at AI labs covers how research hiring and visa strategy interact.
2. The mission and safety conversation
Anthropic's careers page frames the work as making sure powerful AI goes well for everyone, and the company publishes research and policy material on its website. Read some of it before your interview, not to recite it but so you can discuss a trade-off you actually find hard. If you are aiming at safety work specifically, read our guide to AI safety researcher roles and H-1B sponsorship in 2026.
3. Clear writing and specific stories
Prepare four or five stories with real numbers and stakes: a bug you owned, a disagreement you resolved, a decision you reversed. Translate non-US titles into terms a US interviewer recognises, without inflating them.
4. A realistic view of the market
Indeed Hiring Lab reported on 2026-09-17 that in the most AI-exposed occupations, the entry-level share of salaried postings fell from 29% to 10% between 2021 and 2026. New grads are competing for a smaller slice, so depth of preparation matters more than application volume.
The visa questions to raise in an Anthropic interview
Anthropic says it sponsors visas and green cards "for eligible roles", so the real Anthropic H-1B and visa sponsorship question is whether yours is one of them, and on what timeline. Here is what to ask, by status (as of October 2026).
| Your status | What to ask the recruiter | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| F-1 on post-completion OPT | Is this role open to sponsorship, and would the company register me in the next H-1B lottery? | Your OPT unemployment limit is 90 days. A long loop that ends in "we don't sponsor" is costly. |
| F-1 on STEM OPT | Is the hiring entity enrolled in E-Verify, and will it sign a Form I-983 training plan? | STEM OPT employers must use E-Verify and complete the I-983. The aggregate unemployment limit across OPT and the 24-month extension is 150 days. |
| Current H-1B holder | Will the company file a transfer petition, and what start date does that support? | If you were already counted against the cap, a change of employer is usually a new petition without a new lottery. |
| Any status, long-term | Does the company sponsor green cards for this role, and at what point after hire? | PERM labor certification and an I-140 take time, and AC21 extensions beyond six years depend on when they are filed. |
| Researcher with a publication record | Would the company consider an O-1 petition if the lottery does not work out? | The O-1 is not capped. It has its own evidence standard, which counsel assesses. |
Two more questions apply to everyone:
- Job title and SOC code. The occupation code and wage level on the LCA set the prevailing-wage floor and, under wage-weighted selection, your lottery odds.
- Who handles immigration. Ask who the immigration counsel is and when you would be introduced. DOL rules bar employers from making the worker pay the H-1B training fee and treat petition costs as the employer's business expense, so being asked to cover them is a red flag worth raising with an attorney.
For phrasing that keeps the conversation professional, see our guide to answering "do you need sponsorship" in an interview.
How the 2026 H-1B rules change the Anthropic H-1B math
If you are on OPT or STEM OPT, a first H-1B at Anthropic is almost certainly cap-subject. Anthropic is a private company. It is not a university, a nonprofit affiliated with one, a nonprofit research organization or a government research organization, which are the employers USCIS treats as cap-exempt. That means the lottery, and the lottery changed this year.
| Rule | Before | Now (as of October 2026) | What to do differently |
|---|---|---|---|
| H-1B selection | Random selection, one chance per unique beneficiary | Wage-weighted selection, in effect since 2026-02-27 (Level IV x4, III x3, II x2, I x1) | Ask what wage level the role maps to. A higher level means more entries in the draw. |
| FY2028 registration | Usually a March window | Not announced by USCIS | Do not plan around a specific date. Watch the USCIS registration page. |
| $100,000 entry fee | Proclamation 10973, September 2025 | Extended by Proclamation 11069 to 2027-09-21; blocked by California v. Mullin (vacatur 2026-06-08) and Global Nurse Force v. Trump (2026-09-30) | Ask counsel how they plan around it. Do not assume the fee is being collected, or that it has gone away for good. Appeals are pending. |
| $103,265 cap-subject fee | Did not exist | Proposed only; comments closed 2026-09-24, no final rule | Treat it as a risk to watch, not a cost that exists today. |
Our guide to the wage-weighted H-1B lottery for new grads explains why Level I and Level III offers give very different odds. The rule itself is in the Federal Register.
Reading the LCA numbers carefully
Business Insider data reportedly shows Anthropic's certified LCAs rising from 10 to 59 in a Q2 2026 comparison, and OpenAI's from 20 to 63. These are reported figures, not official counts, and an LCA is a Department of Labor wage filing, not an approval or a promise about any role. You can search primary filings through DOL OFLC's disclosure data and the USCIS H-1B Employer Data Hub. The Data Hub covers FY2009 through FY2026 Q3, so any "Q4" ranking you see elsewhere is not from USCIS.
A preparation timeline that respects your visa clock
- Day 0, invitation received. Write down your OPT or STEM OPT end date and the unemployment days you have used. Your DSO can confirm the count from SEVIS.
- First recruiter call. Confirm the loop stages, the AI-tool policy, the work location and whether the role is open to sponsorship. If sponsorship is ruled out, decide quickly whether to continue.
- Weeks 1 to 3. Technical preparation weighted to the posting, two or three mock sessions out loud, and the company's published research.
- Final rounds. Bring your stories, your questions and a short, rehearsed summary of your work authorization.
- Offer stage. Ask for the job title, expected wage level and H-1B or transfer filing timeline in writing, and when you will meet immigration counsel.
- Before you accept. Review your specific case with a licensed immigration attorney (for H-1B, O-1 or green-card questions) or your DSO (for OPT, STEM OPT, I-983 and SEVIS questions). They handle different things and are not interchangeable.
On travel: do not leave the US while an OPT or STEM OPT application is pending, and confirm any trip with your DSO. If you need a new visa stamp later, interview waivers are no longer available for H-1B or F-1, you apply in your country of nationality or residence, and wait times are on travel.state.gov, not in any blog post.
Common mistakes
- Treating a forum post as the process. Interview reports go stale. The posting and your recruiter are the source.
- Hiding the sponsorship need. A wrong answer on a work-authorization question is a far bigger problem than a "no" from a recruiter.
- Using AI tools in an assessment without checking. Anthropic's published guidance rules out AI help in take-homes and live interviews unless it says otherwise. Read it, and ask if a stage is unclear.
- Ignoring the wage level. Under wage-weighted selection, it affects your lottery odds. Ask before you sign.
- Assuming fees are settled. The $100,000 fee is blocked, not abolished, and the $103,265 fee is only proposed.
- Confusing the two 60-day grace periods. The 60-day F-1 post-completion grace period still applies, because the Duration-of-Status rule is blocked. A proposed rule would remove the separate 60-day grace period for workers such as H-1B holders. Comments close 2026-11-10, and the current grace period applies until a final rule.
- Letting the loop eat your OPT clock. Keep applying elsewhere until you have a signed offer.
Frequently asked questions
Does Anthropic sponsor H-1B visas?
Anthropic's careers page says it sponsors visas and green cards for eligible roles. Business Insider data reportedly shows its certified LCAs, the wage filing that comes before an H-1B petition, rising from 10 to 59 in Q2 2026. Neither says anything about your specific role, so ask the recruiter directly whether the position is open to sponsorship.
When should I tell an Anthropic recruiter I need visa sponsorship?
Answer the work-authorization question on the application truthfully, then confirm the details in the first recruiter screen. Raising it early costs nothing if the role is open to sponsorship and saves weeks if it is not.
Does the $100,000 H-1B fee affect an Anthropic offer?
As of mid-October 2026 the fee is blocked. Proclamation 11069 (signed 2026-09-18) extended the entry restriction to 2027-09-21, but court orders in California v. Mullin (2026-06-08) and Global Nurse Force v. Trump (2026-09-30) block collection. Ask the employer's immigration counsel how they are planning around it, because the appeals are still open.
Is an Anthropic H-1B petition cap-subject?
For a first-time H-1B, generally yes, because Anthropic is a private company rather than a university, nonprofit research organization or government research lab. That means the lottery, which has used wage-weighted selection since 2026-02-27. If you already hold cap-subject H-1B status, a move is usually a transfer petition rather than a new lottery entry, which an immigration attorney can confirm for your facts.
The bottom line
Prepare for the loop the posting describes, ask your visa questions in the first recruiter call, and get the title, wage level and filing timeline in writing. This guide is not legal advice; your own I-20, I-94 or USCIS notice governs, and your DSO or a licensed immigration attorney should review your specific case.
