F-1 Visa Slots for Spring 2027 in India: How to Check Real Availability and What to Do If None Open
No spring 2027 F-1 slot before your start date? How slots really appear in India, how to read the wait data, and the fallback your school controls.

Part of our guide to US visa interviews.
Status as of November 1, 2026. F-1 visa slots for spring 2027 in India are not released on one announced date. Appointments appear continuously in the official US visa scheduling system, and the State Department's Global Visa Wait Times page ("Last updated: 21-OCT-2026") is the live source for estimates at each Mission India post. Business Today reported on 2026-10-23 that the page showed F, M and J estimates of 1 to 4 months across the five posts. Every F-1 applicant, renewals included, interviews in person (in effect since 2025-10-01). If nothing opens before your I-20 start date, the fallback runs through your school: a late-arrival or deferral decision by your DSO for the I-20, and by admissions for your offer.
What that means right now:
- In effect: in-person interviews for all F, M and J applicants; scheduling in your country of nationality or residence (since 2025-09-06); one free reschedule at Mission India (since 2025-01-01).
- Reported, not official: the post-by-post India figures below. They are a dated snapshot, not a promise.
- Not available: an F-1 interview waiver, a paid F-1 fast-track in India, or booking in a country where you are neither a national nor a resident as a shortcut.
Are F-1 visa slots open for spring 2027 in India?
F-1 visa slots for spring 2027 open whenever the five Mission India posts add capacity or other applicants cancel, so availability changes constantly rather than on a release date. As of November 1, 2026, the State Department publishes only monthly wait estimates. The calendar inside your own scheduling account is the only place that shows a date you can book.
The wait-time page gives monthly estimates in 30-day steps (half-months in 15-day steps). Your scheduling calendar is a live list of unclaimed appointments, so a post showing a 3-month estimate can still offer a date next week after a cancellation, or the reverse.
You can book early. Study in the States, the DHS student portal, summarized the State Department's 2023 guidance: "consular officers can issue an F or M student visa up to 365 days in advance," but "Students can still only enter the United States 30 days before the Program Start Date listed on their Form I-20" (Study in the States, 2023-05-02). For a January 2027 start, the issuance window opened in January 2026. The constraint is the interview date.
F-1 visa slots for spring 2027: what the India wait data shows
Business Today transcribed the State Department figures on 2026-10-23 and called them "estimated next available appointments, not guaranteed waiting periods." Treat them as reported, and check the live page before you plan around any of them.
F, M and J next-appointment estimates at Mission India posts, as reported on 2026-10-23
| Post | Office | Reported F/M/J estimate |
|---|---|---|
| Hyderabad | US Consulate General | 1 month |
| Kolkata | US Consulate General | 2.5 months |
| New Delhi | US Embassy | 3 months |
| Chennai | US Consulate General | 3.5 months |
| Mumbai | US Consulate General | 4 months |
Source: Business Today, 2026-10-23, transcribing the State Department page last updated 21-OCT-2026. Each figure was the estimated wait at that update, not a date you can count forward from today.
None of this covers time after the interview. Mintz wrote on 2026-10-30 that 221(g) administrative processing holds "can delay issuance for weeks or months" and that social-media vetting "is adding time" (Mintz, 2026-10-30). F, M and J applicants have been subject to the State Department's online-presence review since June 2025.
For context, the October 2026 SEVIS table shows 316,893 active F and M records for Indian students, 13.5% fewer than in October 2025 by our comparison of the two tables, with Indian master's records down 20.1% (Study in the States, October 2026 SEVIS data). Those are active records, not new arrivals, and they do not predict waits.
How do I check US visa wait times for students in India?
Keep two numbers separate: the State Department's estimate for each post, and the earliest date your own account offers. Write down both, because your DSO will ask.
- Open the Global Visa Wait Times page on travel.state.gov and note its "Last updated" date.
- Read the F, M, J column for New Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai, Hyderabad and Kolkata.
- Complete your DS-160 and pay the I-901 SEVIS fee on ICE's official page ($350 for F and M students) if you have not already.
- Set your social media accounts to public. The US Mission India visa page instructs F, J and M applicants, among other classes, to "adjust the privacy setting on all social media accounts to 'public' or 'open'".
- Sign in to the official scheduling site through the link on that Mission India page, never through a link someone sent you.
- Compare the earliest bookable date with your I-20 program start date and with the date 30 days before it, the earliest you can enter.
- Book the earliest date that works, then keep checking for earlier openings yourself, without bots or paid alert services. Moving the booking uses your one free reschedule.
- Email your DSO with screenshots as soon as the earliest available date falls after your program start date.
For the platform details and the rule that your DS-160 barcode must match the application number used to schedule, see our guide to how US visa appointment slots release and which booking site each consulate uses; it was written for H-1B applicants, but those rules apply to F-1 bookings too.
A worked spring 2027 timeline
Say your I-20 lists a program start date of Monday, January 11, 2027 (a hypothetical date; use the one printed on your own I-20).
| Date | What it means |
|---|---|
| 2026-01-11 | The 365-day issuance window opened. Already behind you. |
| 2026-11-01 | Today. You are checking calendars at all five posts. |
| 2026-12-12 | The earliest you can enter the US on this I-20 (30 days before the start date). |
| 2027-01-11 | Program start date on the I-20. |
| School's cutoff | The last date your school accepts a late arrival. Your school sets this, not the State Department. |
Now run three scenarios against it.
- You book a slot in early December. You have some room for the interview, a short administrative hold and travel. Do not book flights you cannot change until the visa is in your passport.
- Your best slot is in late December. It can work, but a 221(g) hold could push you past the start date. Tell your DSO now, so a late-arrival or deferral plan exists before you need it.
- Your earliest slot is after January 11. Keep checking for cancellations, but do not rely on one. Contact your DSO and admissions office this week, because deferral has to be arranged before you travel and school deadlines can fall before the start date.
Are F-1 interview waivers available in 2026?
No. Under the State Department's interview waiver update of September 18, 2025, in effect since 2025-10-01, F, M and J applicants interview in person, and that includes students renewing an F-1 stamp. Nothing changed in 2026.
The remaining waivers cover B-1/B-2 (and Border Crossing Card) and H-2A renewals within 12 months, plus diplomatic classes. Anyone offering you an F-1 "dropbox" appointment is offering something the published rules do not provide. Plan around an in-person interview, and prepare with our list of common F-1 visa interview questions.
If you were refused once, ICE's I-901 FAQ says you do not pay the SEVIS fee again if you "Reapply for a student visa within 12 months of the initial I-901 SEVIS fee payment" (ICE I-901 FAQ). Before you rebook, read our guide to why F-1 student visas get rejected for what a 214(b) or 221(g) slip means.
Can I book in another country if India has no slots?
Not as a shortcut. Since 2025-09-06, the State Department has told nonimmigrant visa applicants to schedule in their country of nationality or residence (State Department notice). The US Mission India visa page repeats it: applicants "should schedule their visa interview appointments at the U.S. Embassy or Consulate in their country of residence or nationality," and "Visa application fees are non-refundable and non-transferable." Older advice about booking in Dubai, Singapore or elsewhere predates that guidance. Within India, you can pick among the five Mission India posts, so check all five.
If you hold a passport from one of the 39 countries under Proclamation 10998 (in effect since 2026-01-01), different restrictions apply. Our earlier guide to F-1 appointment planning around country suspensions covers that situation, but its third-country booking steps predate the nationality-or-residence guidance above, so treat them as background rather than a current option.
Rescheduling: spend your one free change carefully
Mission India has allowed one free reschedule since 2025-01-01. Travel Trade Journal reported that rescheduling beyond that one change "will incur additional fees," and that an applicant who misses the appointment must "book a new appointment and repay the application fees" (Travel Trade Journal).
Use the free change only when the new date changes your outcome, such as moving from after your start date to before it. Moving from February 14 to February 1 when your program starts January 11 burns the change without solving anything. Read the scheduling site's current terms before you touch the booking.
What to do if no F-1 slot opens before your program start date
Decision checklist, as of 2026-11. Most options run through your school, not the consulate.
| Situation | Who decides | What to ask or do |
|---|---|---|
| Earliest slot is before the start date but tight | You, with your DSO informed | Keep the booking, watch for earlier openings, and ask the DSO what late-arrival window exists. |
| Earliest slot is after the start date but before the school's late-arrival cutoff | Your DSO and school | Ask whether you can arrive late on the current I-20, and get the answer in writing. |
| No slot before the cutoff | Your DSO (I-20) and admissions office (offer) | Ask about deferring to summer or fall 2027 and a new I-20. |
| You want an earlier date for a time-sensitive reason | The consular post | Request an expedite through the online appointment system (see below); keep your current booking. |
Can I ask for an expedited appointment?
You can ask; the post decides. The Mission India visa page says requests go through the online appointment system and "You must already have a confirmed interview appointment date in order to request an expedited appointment." Keep your current slot while you wait: the page says not to cancel it "unless you receive a confirmation that your request for an expedited appointment has been approved." It also warns that expedited slots "are very limited" and that not every traveler can be accommodated, "even if the purpose of travel is time sensitive." A program start date may or may not be enough.
Can I defer my I-20 to fall 2027 if I don't get a slot?
Possibly, if your school allows it. Study in the States says "your DSO can adjust your start date in SEVIS and issue you a new Form I-20," that the new date "should be at the beginning of another semester or term that you are able to attend," and, bluntly, "You cannot defer your program start date once you have already entered the United States" (Study in the States, "How Do I Defer My Enrollment?").
Practical points to raise with your DSO and admissions office:
- The offer and the I-20 are separate. Admissions decides whether your seat, scholarship or assistantship moves to fall 2027. The DSO handles the SEVIS record and the new I-20.
- Ask what happens to your DS-160 and booking. Your DS-160 lists your school and SEVIS ID, so ask whether the new I-20 changes anything and whether to keep your appointment.
- Ask about the I-901 payment. ICE says "Fee payment is made for a specific SEVIS ID number," so ask whether the deferred I-20 keeps your SEVIS ID; if not, read the ICE I-901 FAQ on fee transfers before paying again.
- Enter on the new I-20. Study in the States says "You must enter the United States on the new Form I-20 that reflects your adjusted program start date" (Study in the States, 2013-05-21), and the 30-day entry limit then runs from that new date.
Our explainer on reading Form I-20 line by line shows where the program start date sits and what changes on a reissued form.
Are Telegram slot groups safe to use?
They are not an official channel, and they are a known route for slot-related scams. Some groups share sightings of open dates; others push paid "slot booking", login sharing or look-alike payment pages. We make no claim about any specific group; the risk lies in what you hand over.
Common misconception, then correction
- "Agents have access to hidden F-1 slots." Appointments appear in the same official system you can see. There is no separate inventory you can verify.
- "Share your login and we'll grab the slot." Anyone with your login can cancel or move your appointment, spend your free reschedule, or book under a mismatched DS-160 number.
- "There's a paid fast-track for students." The $750 expedited appointment pilot (in effect to 2026-12-31 unless extended) covers B-1/B-2 visas at select posts in the Americas only. It has no India post and no F-1 option.
- "All India interviews are pushed to 2027." That claim traces to January 2026 reports about H-1B appointments and has not been re-confirmed. It says nothing about F-1 slots.
- "The new visa rules target India." Secretary of State Marco Rubio told the Indian Express on 2026-10-20 that the changes are "not about India, this applies globally," adding, "We want people to study in the United States" (State Department transcript).
- "D/S has ended, so you'll get a fixed I-94 date." The duration of status rule has been blocked by a federal court since 2026-09-14; summary judgment is briefed and DHS's appeal is pending. USCIS says it "will proceed under the previous regulatory provisions" (USCIS I-539 page), so D/S and the 60-day F-1 grace period still apply.
If you use a group for alerts at all, use it read-only and confirm every date by signing in to the official site yourself.
After the interview: build in buffer
A 221(g) refusal means your case needs more processing or documents. How long that takes varies by case, and requested documents are due within a year or a new fee is needed; our guide to 221(g) administrative processing covers the follow-up. Boston University's international office tells its students who travel abroad to "allow at least 30 days for visa processing" in its current travel advisory, one school's benchmark worth borrowing.
Common mistakes
- Treating the wait-time estimate as your appointment date. It is a monthly estimate. Your calendar is the real list.
- Checking only one post. The five Mission India posts differed by months in the reported October snapshot.
- Burning the free reschedule on a move that changes nothing. Move only when the new date changes which side of your start date you land on.
- Cancelling a booking while an expedite request is pending. Keep it until the post confirms the expedite.
- Waiting until the start date passes to call the DSO. Deferral has to happen before you travel, and school deadlines can fall earlier.
- Booking non-refundable flights before the visa is in your passport. A 221(g) hold can last weeks or months.
Frequently asked questions
Are F-1 visa slots open for spring 2027 in India?
Slots are released continuously into the official scheduling system rather than on one announced date. As of November 1, 2026, the State Department wait-time page (last updated 21-OCT-2026) gives monthly estimates per post, and Business Today reported on 2026-10-23 that F, M and J estimates in India ran from about 1 month at Hyderabad to 4 months at Mumbai. Only the calendar inside your own scheduling account shows a date you can actually book.
How do I check US visa wait times for students in India?
Open the Global Visa Wait Times page on travel.state.gov, find New Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai, Hyderabad and Kolkata, and read the F, M, J column. The figures are estimates in 30-day steps, updated monthly, and the page read "Last updated: 21-OCT-2026" as of November 1, 2026. Then compare them with the earliest date your own scheduling account offers, because the estimate and the calendar are different numbers.
Are F-1 interview waivers available in 2026?
No. Under the State Department update of 2025-09-18, in effect since 2025-10-01, F, M and J applicants interview in person, renewals included, and nothing changed in 2026. The remaining waivers cover B-1/B-2 (and Border Crossing Card) and H-2A renewals within 12 months, plus diplomatic classes.
Can I defer my I-20 to fall 2027 if I don't get a slot?
Possibly, but only your school can decide. Study in the States says your DSO can adjust your start date in SEVIS and issue a new I-20, that the new date should begin another term you can attend, and that you cannot defer once you have entered the United States. Your admissions office decides separately whether your offer moves. Ask both early, before your current program start date passes.
Are Telegram slot groups safe to use?
Treat them as unverified chatter at best. Never share your scheduling login, passport details or one-time passwords, never pay anyone to book or catch a slot, and never open a payment link posted in a group. Anyone holding your login can cancel or move your booking, and a careless move can spend the one free reschedule Mission India has allowed since 2025-01-01.

How we checked this: on November 1, 2026 we compared State Department, US Mission India, Study in the States, ICE and USCIS pages with our dated facts brief; the India post figures are a news outlet's transcription, marked as reported.
This is general information, not legal or tax advice. Your own I-20, visa and refusal slip govern, and your DSO (for I-20, SEVIS and deferral questions) or a licensed immigration attorney (for refusals and status strategy) should guide any decision about your case.
