FNU on Your Visa, I-94 or EAD: What 'First Name Unknown' Means for Single-Name Holders
FNU on your visa is not a mistake. Single-name holders get stuck when the I-20, I-94, EAD, SSN card and license disagree and nobody can explain why.

Part of our guide to the I-94 record.
FNU meaning: "First Name Unknown." It is the placeholder the State Department enters in a visa's given-name field when the applicant has only one name, so a single-name holder's visa can read PRIYA, FNU. FNU on your US visa is not an error, and as of 2026-11-01 nothing requires you to fix it. The friction comes later, because each agency handles a single name its own way: SEVIS treats FNU as an invalid given name, Form I-9 asks for "Unknown", SSA issues your SSN in your single name, and your I-94 comes from CBP's electronic travel records, so it can carry FNU too. This guide shows what each record should say and how to keep them consistent.
Status line, as of 2026-11-01: every rule below is in effect and comes from the agency's own manual or form instructions: 9 FAM 403.9 (State, visas), SEVP's Name Standards (SEVIS and the I-20), the 08/21/25 Form I-765 instructions, the 01/20/25 Form I-9 instructions and SSA's Program Operations Manual System (POMS). We found no proposal to change any of them.
FNU meaning: what does FNU stand for on a US visa?
FNU stands for "First Name Unknown." The visa system needs an entry in the first-name field, so when an applicant has only one name, consular staff record that name as the surname and enter FNU as the first name. It records that you have no separate first name. It is not a doubt about your identity, and it is not an error.
The rule is one line in the State Department's Foreign Affairs Manual, 9 FAM 403.9-2(A) (that subsection last changed 2023-09-20), in its instructions for entering data on a machine-readable visa:
"In certain countries where many nationals have only a surname, the applicant's first name should be entered as FNU. For example, "Smith, FNU", the "FNU" stands for "First Name Unknown.""
The same section says the visa data fields "do not accept special characters" such as commas and hyphens, which is why names can look compressed on a foil. The foil also carries your visa control number, which is a different thing from your passport or SEVIS number; our guide to finding your F-1 visa number shows where it sits.
In many countries a single name is a complete legal name, and single-name holders are common among some applicants from India, Indonesia and Afghanistan, among others. FNU exists because the visa record expects a first-name entry, not because your name is incomplete. SEVIS, as the next sections show, accepts a blank given name instead.
Am I a single-name holder, or is my surname field just empty?
Read the first line of the machine-readable zone (MRZ) at the bottom of your passport bio page. After the document code and three-letter country code, the text before the double chevron << is the primary identifier (usually the surname) and the text after it is the secondary identifier (given names). SEVP's Name Standards page uses P<UTOARKFREITH<<< as its single-name example: one name in total, which SEVIS records as Surname/Primary Name ARKFREITH with a blank given name.
An empty surname field is not the same as a single name. SEVP notes that passports from India, Burma (Myanmar) and Kuwait list names "in given to surname order", and its Indian example, P<IND<<KUMAR<VIVEK, has an empty primary identifier but two names. Because the student and the US visa indicated that KUMAR is the given name and VIVEK the surname, SEVIS records Surname VIVEK and Given Name KUMAR. If your passport holds two or more names with an empty surname field, ask your DSO how SEVIS should split them before anything else is built from your I-20; SEVP says school officials "always can make the final decision when entering names."
One name, eight records: how each agency handles it
Single-name rules by record, as of 2026-11. Each agency's live page governs, and your own documents govern over this table.
| Record | Who sets the rule (source, date) | What the rule says | What a single-name holder usually sees or enters |
|---|---|---|---|
| Passport | Your government | Its own format; the MRZ shows your name as the primary or secondary identifier | One name, in the surname or given-name position |
| US visa foil | State Department, 9 FAM 403.9-2(A) (2023-09-20) | First name "should be entered as FNU" | Surname: your name. Given name: FNU |
| SEVIS record and Form I-20 | SEVP Name Standards (updated 2022-11-14); SEVIS Help Hub (2026-07-27) | Single name goes in Surname/Primary Name; FNU, Unknown, None and Not Applicable are invalid given names | Surname: your name. Given name: blank |
| I-94 | CBP | No single-name instruction on the I-94 website (checked 2026-11-01); built from electronic travel records | May show FNU, as on the visa; search the variants below |
| EAD (Form I-765, edition 08/21/25) | USCIS | "full legal name as shown on your birth certificate or legal change of name document"; no single-name instruction | The name your DSO confirms matches your I-20 |
| Form I-9 (instructions 01/20/25) | USCIS | Single name in Last Name, "Unknown" in First Name | Last name: your name. First name: Unknown |
| SSN card | SSA, POMS RM 10205.130 (2024-06-07) | SSN issued in your single name; FNU kept as another name | Your single name, unless you insist on FNU |
| Driver's license or state ID | Your state's DMV | Varies by state; DMVs may verify status through DHS's SAVE program | Ask the DMV before you go |
SEVIS is the strictest. Its Help Hub page on personal information (updated 2026-07-27) tells school officials, "If the student has only one name, enter it in this field", meaning Surname/Primary Name, and the Name Standards page says single names go there "regardless of whether they are listed as given or family names in the passport VIZ" (the printed part of the bio page). A blank given name on your I-20 is correct, not missing data.
Common misconception: "FNU is a typo on my visa, and I need to get it removed." Correction: FNU is the State Department's own instruction. The real risk is records that disagree without an explanation you can give, such as FNU on the visa and I-94, a blank on the I-20 and "Unknown" on the I-9. Each of those is correct for its own system, and knowing why is what lets you answer HR, SSA or a DMV clerk calmly.
Should I enter FNU as my first name on the I-94 website?
Start with the name exactly as your visa foil shows it, which for a single-name holder usually means your name as the last name and FNU as the first name. CBP's I-94 website publishes no single-name instruction (we checked on 2026-11-01), and what you type changes only the search, never your record.
CBP's I-94 page (last modified 2026-07-22) says CBP "now gathers travelers' arrival/departure information automatically from their electronic travel records," so the name on your I-94 may not match your visa letter for letter. If the first search fails, work through these variants on the official I-94 website:
- FNU as the first name, your name as the last name (the visa format).
- FNU as the last name, your name as the first name, in case the order was reversed.
- Your name in both fields, a format some single-name travelers report on airline and other records.
If nothing matches, our guide to an I-94 "no record found" result covers passport-number formats and the travel-history check.
Is FNU on my I-94 an error? Usually not. If your visa says FNU and your I-94 says FNU, the records agree. A misspelled name, a wrong birth date or a name that matches neither your passport nor your visa is an error, and for a CBP-issued I-94 only CBP fixes it. CBP's Deferred Inspection Sites page (last modified 2026-10-27) says the sites "will only correct errors made at the time of entry", and USCIS's Form I-102 page says that for a CBP-issued I-94 with incorrect information, "do not file Form I-102." Our guide to correcting an I-94 error at CBP walks through the request.
If you are on H-1B or H-4 and your latest I-94 came at the bottom of an I-797A, USCIS issued it, so a USCIS mistake on it goes to USCIS on Form I-102 with "a letter explaining the specific error and evidence verifying the correct information." Talk to the attorney who filed the petition before you file anything yourself.
Why does my EAD show my name differently from my visa?
Because the visa and the EAD come from agencies with different data standards. The State Department prints FNU, SEVIS treats FNU as an invalid given name and leaves the field blank, and USCIS prints the EAD from your Form I-765 and its own records. A different placeholder across those documents is not automatically an error; a misspelling is.
The Form I-765 instructions (edition 08/21/25) ask you to "Provide your full legal name as shown on your birth certificate or legal change of name document" and give no single-name rule. Their general instruction to type "N/A" when a question does not apply is easy to over-apply to a name field, and SEVP lists "Not Applicable" and "None" among invalid given names. Before you file for OPT or STEM OPT, ask your DSO to confirm exactly how your name sits in SEVIS, so the I-765 matches the I-20 that carries your OPT recommendation. That matters beyond USCIS: SSA's manual says, "For foreign students (F-1 and M-1) consider the name on Form I-20 the legal name."
When the card arrives, compare it with the I-765 you filed, not with your visa:
- USCIS printed something other than what you filed. That is a USCIS error. USCIS's I-765 page (reviewed 2026-10-07) says, "If the card we issued to you contains incorrect information that is due to our error, you do not need to file a new Form I-765 and filing fee." The USCIS Contact Center page sends you to e-Request "If your document or notice has a mistake that you believe was due to USCIS error."
- The card matches what you filed, and what you filed was wrong. You file a new I-765 marked as a "correction of your EAD not due to USCIS error" (Part 1, Item 1.b), with the I-765 fee on the G-1055 fee schedule: $520 on paper or $470 online in edition 10/26/26.
Our guide to an EAD card with a wrong name or date covers both routes. If you are unsure which applies, ask your DSO before you pay anything.
Can FNU cause problems with my SSN or driver's license?
It can cause delays, mostly when your documents disagree. SSA's manual has a rule for exactly this case, so trouble usually starts only when your documents show names that look like they belong to different people.
SSA's POMS RM 10212.001 (effective 2024-05-31) defines a foreign-born applicant's legal name as "the name shown on the presented immigration document" and says that if the required documents "show clearly different names", staff should not accept them. For single names, POMS RM 10205.130 (effective 2024-06-07) is direct:
"If the individual has a single name and the immigration document shows FNU (First Name Unknown) or other acronym indicating the person does not have a first name, process the SSN in the applicant's single name."
Staff then enter FNU, with your name, in the "Other name used by number holder" field. The same section adds that if you insist on FNU as your first name, SSA will "process the SSN card request in the name exactly as shown on the immigration document." Decide before the appointment, because a card that reads FNU carries FNU into every system that copies it, starting with payroll.
Timing matters too. The 08/21/25 I-765 has no SSN request, so on OPT you apply at SSA yourself, on or after your EAD's start date; SSA will not process an application while that start date is still in the future. Our SSN and driver's license guide covers the visit.
At the DMV, each state handles single names its own way. USCIS's SAVE page for benefit and license applicants (reviewed 2026-09-28) says agencies issuing "driver's licenses and ID cards" may use SAVE to verify your status, and its tips are "Make sure your records are accurate" and "Show recently issued documents." SSA's RM 10212.150 also notes that DMVs may verify your name and SSN with SSA electronically, and that "some State DMVs require the name on the SSN card to reflect the person's current legal name." Call or check your state DMV's site and ask how it records a person with one name before you queue.
At work, the Form I-9 has its own rule. The Form I-9 instructions (01/20/25) say, "If you only have one name, enter it in the Last Name field and then enter "Unknown" in the First Name field." If your employer uses E-Verify, inconsistent names can surface as a mismatch; our guide to an E-Verify tentative nonconfirmation explains what happens next, and our Form I-9 on OPT guide covers which documents to hand over.
A worked example: one name from visa to first paycheck
Priya is illustrative, not a real case. Her Indian passport shows PRIYA as her given name, no surname, and an MRZ beginning P<IND<<PRIYA.
| Date | Record | What it shows | What Priya does |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2025-07-10 | F-1 visa foil (State) | Surname PRIYA, given name FNU | Nothing; this is the 9 FAM convention |
| 2025-08-14 | I-94 (CBP), entry at Newark | Found with last name PRIYA, first name FNU | Saves the PDF |
| 2026-10-12 | I-20 (SEVIS), after her DSO recommends OPT | Surname/Primary Name PRIYA, given name blank | Checks it against her MRZ with her DSO |
| 2026-10-15 | Form I-765 (USCIS), filed online | Name entered to match the I-20, as her DSO advised | Screenshots what she typed |
| When the card arrives | EAD | Compared with her filed I-765 | Uses the no-fee route only if USCIS changed her name |
| On or after the EAD start date | SSN application (SSA) | SSN issued as PRIYA; FNU stored as another name | Brings passport, I-94, I-20 and EAD |
| First day of work | Form I-9 (employer) | Last Name PRIYA, First Name Unknown | Gives HR the exact SSN-card spelling for payroll |
| Before a license | State DMV | Varies by state | Asks first how the state records one name |
Plan for the wait. USCIS's processing-times tool showed 80% of (c)(3) F-1 student I-765s completed within 5 months when read on 2026-11-01; check the live figure, which changes.
How to keep a single name consistent, step by step
- Read the MRZ on your passport bio page and count the names: one name in total, or two or more with an empty surname field.
- Gather your visa foil, latest I-20 (or DS-2019 or I-797), the I-94 PDF from the CBP I-94 website, EAD, SSN card and any state ID.
- List how each record shows your name, field by field, on one page: your "name map."
- Ask your DSO to confirm the SEVIS Surname/Primary Name and Given Name fields match your MRZ.
- Enter your name on Form I-765 to match the SEVIS record your DSO confirmed, and screenshot exactly what you submitted.
- Contact a CBP Deferred Inspection Site, by email or in person as that site's listing directs, if a CBP-issued I-94 has an entry error.
- Submit a USCIS e-Request, via the USCIS Contact Center page, if USCIS printed your EAD differently from your I-765.
- Apply at an SSA office on or after your EAD start date with your passport, I-94, I-20 and EAD.
- Complete Form I-9 Section 1 with your name in Last Name and "Unknown" in First Name.
- Check your state DMV's single-name handling before your visit.
- Keep your name map with your immigration file; USCIS forms such as the I-765 ask for "all other names you have ever used."
How do I fix FNU on my records?
First decide whether anything is broken, because FNU on a visa or an I-94 is a convention, not an error. Real errors go back to the office that made them, and each office fixes only its own record. If your problem is a misspelled or reordered name rather than FNU, our guide to fixing a name mismatch across passport, I-20, SSN and EAD sets out the order to work in.
Fix routes by record, as of 2026-11.
| Problem | Who fixes it | How |
|---|---|---|
| FNU on your visa foil | No correction needed | Under 9 FAM, a new visa is likely to show FNU again while your passport has one name |
| CBP-issued I-94 with an entry error | CBP Deferred Inspection Site | Email or visit with your passport, visa and I-20 or approval notice |
| USCIS-issued I-94 (on an I-797A) with a USCIS error | USCIS | Form I-102 with a letter and evidence, usually through your employer's attorney |
| I-20 or SEVIS name | Your DSO | Updates SEVIS personal information and reprints the I-20 |
| EAD printed differently from your I-765 | USCIS | e-Request; no new I-765 or fee |
| EAD wrong because your I-765 was wrong | USCIS | New I-765 (Item 1.b) with the fee |
| SSN card not showing your legal name | SSA | Name correction under POMS RM 10212.150 |
| You want a first name added | Your passport authority, then every US agency | Amend or reissue the passport, then update each record |
The last row is the heavy one. US agencies are likely to treat a surname or first name added at home as a name change: SSA, for example, asks for evidence of a name change (POMS RM 10212.010), your DSO must update SEVIS, your existing EAD would still show the old name, and your next visa would carry the new one. Talk to an immigration attorney, and to your DSO if you are on F-1, OPT or STEM OPT, before you apply for the new passport, especially if an I-765 or H-1B petition is pending.
Common mistakes
- Using FNU as your name. FNU fills a database field. Sign documents, resumes and offer letters with your actual name.
- Typing N/A, None or Unknown into a given-name field that does not ask for it. SEVIS treats these as invalid given names, and of the forms covered here only Form I-9 asks for "Unknown."
- Deciding the SSN-card name at the counter. POMS lets SSA issue the card in your single name or, if you insist, exactly as your immigration document shows it, FNU included. Payroll copies whichever you choose, so decide before the appointment.
- Filing Form I-102 for a CBP-issued I-94. USCIS says not to; CBP corrects its own records.
- Paying for a replacement EAD when USCIS made the error. Compare the card with what you filed before you pay.
- Asking the consulate or CBP to "remove" FNU. It is the convention, not a mistake, and a new visa is likely to print it again.
- Changing your passport name mid-process. A new name creates a name-change trail across every US record; plan it with an attorney first.
Frequently asked questions
What does FNU mean on my US visa?
FNU stands for First Name Unknown. The State Department's Foreign Affairs Manual, at 9 FAM 403.9-2(A), tells consular staff that in countries where many nationals have only a surname, the applicant's first name "should be entered as FNU", so a single-name holder's visa can read PRIYA, FNU. It is a placeholder for a required field, not a doubt about your identity, and as of November 2026 it is not an error you need to correct.
Should I enter FNU as my first name on the I-94 website?
Start with your name exactly as the visa foil shows it, which for a single-name holder usually means your name as the last name and FNU as the first name. CBP's I-94 website publishes no single-name rule (checked 2026-11-01), and what you type changes only the search, not your record. If that fails, try FNU as the last name and your name in both fields, then contact a CBP Deferred Inspection Site.
Why does my EAD show my name differently from my visa?
The visa and the EAD come from agencies with different data standards. The State Department prints FNU, SEVIS treats FNU as an invalid given name and leaves the field blank on the I-20, and USCIS prints the EAD from your Form I-765 and its own records. A different placeholder is not automatically an error, but a name USCIS printed differently from your application is a USCIS error it corrects without a new I-765 or fee, per its I-765 page reviewed 2026-10-07.
Can FNU cause problems with my SSN or driver's license?
It can cause delays when your documents disagree. SSA's manual (POMS RM 10205.130, in effect since 2024-06-07) tells staff to issue a single-name person's SSN in the single name when the immigration document shows FNU, and to record FNU as another name, unless you insist on FNU as your first name. DMVs may verify your status through DHS's SAVE program and your name and SSN with SSA, so bring a consistent set of documents.
How do I fix FNU on my records?
First check whether anything is wrong, because FNU on a visa or I-94 is a convention, not an error. Real errors go to the office that made them, which means a CBP Deferred Inspection Site for an I-94 entry error, your DSO for the I-20, USCIS for the EAD and SSA for the card. Adding a name to your passport is likely to be treated as a name change on every US record, so talk to an immigration attorney, and your DSO if you are F-1, before you start.
