Investment Banking Interviews for International Students: Superday Prep and the Sponsorship Question

Banks ask every candidate the same technicals and fit questions, but your CIP code, your sponsorship answer and your lottery math decide what an offer is worth.

An empty glass-walled bank conference room high above a financial district at dusk, leather chairs around a long table and city lights starting to glow

Part of our guide to answering the sponsorship question.

Investment banking interview questions come in two families. Technicals test accounting, valuation, the DCF and M&A math. Fit questions test why banking, why this bank and how well you tell your own story. Most banks open with a one-way recorded video or a short call, then invite finalists to a superday of several back-to-back interviews. If you are on an F-1 visa, there is a third test that never shows up on a prep sheet: the work-authorization questions on the application, and whether your degree's CIP code gives you 12 months of OPT or up to 36. That number decides how many H-1B lottery attempts an offer actually buys you.

Status as of 2026-11-01. Post-completion OPT and the 24-month STEM OPT extension are in effect and unchanged. Wage-weighted H-1B selection has been in effect since 2026-02-27. FY2028 H-1B registration is not announced. SEVP's CPT guidance is in effect but challenged, with a court hearing on 2026-11-06 (check the docket for the outcome after 2026-11-06). The OPT fee is only proposed; comments close 2026-11-09.

Investment banking interview questions: what banks actually test

Investment banking interviews test three things: whether you understand the three financial statements, valuation and M&A math well enough to explain them aloud; whether your story makes the case for banking and for this bank; and whether you stay sharp through a superday of back-to-back interviews. International students need one more prepared answer, on sponsorship.

Which banks sponsor at all is a separate question, covered in our guide to which investment banks sponsor H-1B. This guide covers the interview and the visa decisions inside it: the sponsorship answer, your OPT length and your cap seasons.

How does the investment banking interview process work?

Most banks run a four-stage funnel: an online application, a first round, a superday, and an offer conversation with recruiting or HR. Technical depth rises at each stage, while the visa question sits almost entirely at the first and the last.

The investment banking interview loop for an F-1 candidate (formats vary by bank and group)

StageTypical formatWhat it testsWhere work authorization comes up
ApplicationOnline portal, resume, sometimes an online assessmentSchool, grades, internshipsPortal questions on authorization now and sponsorship later
First roundOne-way recorded video, or a short call with an analyst or associateFit, basic technicals, communicationRarely
SuperdaySeveral back-to-back interviews with analysts, associates, VPs and MDsDeeper technicals, deal discussion, consistencyRarely; if asked, one honest sentence
OfferCall from recruiting or HR, then an offer letterNothing; your turn to askConfirm in writing whether and when the bank will register you for H-1B

Summer analyst internships, the usual feeder for full-time classes, add a second visa layer: Curricular Practical Training (CPT). SEVP's broadcast BCM 2608-01 (2026-08-12) allows CPT only "if its absence would make the attainment of a degree an impossibility," and several schools have paused or narrowed approvals. The guidance is in effect but challenged in AAU v. DHS, with a preliminary-injunction hearing on 2026-11-06 at 3:00 p.m. (court docket; check it for the outcome after that date). Pre-completion OPT is the other route, but USCIS says "all periods of pre-completion OPT will be deducted from the available period of post-completion OPT" (USCIS OPT page). Ask your DSO which route your school allows before you accept a summer offer.

What technical questions are asked in investment banking interviews?

Expect accounting first, then valuation and enterprise value, the DCF and M&A. Groups covering private equity sponsors or leveraged finance add LBO questions. You are scored on walking through mechanics in a clean order, not on reciting definitions.

Accounting and the three statements

Worked answer to the depreciation question, assuming a 25% tax rate. Operating income falls $10, taxes fall $2.50 and net income falls $7.50. On the cash flow statement, net income is down $7.50 but you add back the $10 of non-cash depreciation, so operating cash rises $2.50. On the balance sheet, cash rises $2.50 and PP&E falls $10, so assets fall $7.50, matched by a $7.50 drop in retained earnings. State the tax-rate assumption before you start; interviewers notice.

Valuation, the DCF and enterprise value

M&A, LBO and markets

A cross-border deal from your home market is an asset here. For sales and trading or quant desks, add the probability and mental-math drills in our quant interview prep guide for international candidates.

Finance behavioral interview questions, with the international twist

The core fit set is short: walk me through your resume; why investment banking, why our bank, why this group; tell me about a time you worked under pressure, failed or disagreed; where else are you interviewing. Three get an international twist:

What happens at an investment banking superday?

A superday is the final round: several interviews in a row with bankers at different levels, often filling a morning or an afternoon. Each interviewer scores you separately and the team compares notes, so consistency matters as much as any single brilliant answer.

Superday interviewers usually do not decide sponsorship. If someone asks, answer in one honest sentence and move on: "I'm on F-1, I'll work on OPT, and I'll need H-1B sponsorship after that; recruiting has my details."

When should international students tell banks they need sponsorship?

Tell the bank when it asks, which is usually on the application itself, and answer exactly what is asked. Raise logistics with recruiting or HR rather than your interviewers, and get the bank's answer in writing at the offer stage.

Bank portals typically ask whether you are authorized to work in the US now, and whether you will now or in the future require sponsorship for an employment visa such as the H-1B. Read the exact wording. If you will need an H-1B to keep working after OPT, the truthful answer to the future-sponsorship question is yes; a "no" given to clear a screen tends to surface at the offer stage, when it can cost you the offer. Our guide on how to answer "do you need sponsorship?" has wording for each version.

Check a bank's record yourself. The USCIS H-1B Employer Data Hub now says it covers FY2009 through FY2026 Q4; search the bank's legal entity and compare initial approvals (petitions for initial employment, such as a first H-1B) with continuing approvals (such as extensions). DOL's OFLC performance data page publishes Labor Condition Application disclosure files (latest: FY2026 Q3) showing the titles, locations and wages an employer has filed for. A large count shows a pattern, not a promise for your group.

If a recruiter mentions the $100,000 H-1B fee: as of 2026-11-01 it is not being collected, because courts blocked the agency policies that implement it (Proclamation 11069 stays in effect on paper through 2027-09-21). Change-of-status petitions USCIS grants inside the US, the usual OPT-to-H-1B route, were never covered; a denied change of status or a petition filed for consular notification would be. USCIS's Form I-129 page adds: "If this order is later lifted, DHS still plans to collect the payment."

Is a non-STEM finance degree a problem for OPT in banking?

It does not stop you from working on 12 months of post-completion OPT. It is a problem for runway: only a degree on the DHS STEM Designated Degree Program List unlocks the 24-month STEM OPT extension, which turns 12 months into up to 36 and adds cap seasons.

The test is the CIP code, not the word "finance" in your degree title. Under 8 CFR 214.2(f)(10)(ii)(C)(2), a STEM field is one "included in the Department of Education's Classification of Instructional Programs taxonomy within the two-digit series containing engineering, biological sciences, mathematics, and physical sciences, or a related field," as the DHS STEM list on ICE's SEVP page restates it. On the list ICE links as current (a PDF marked "Last updated: July 22, 2024," checked 2026-11-01), Financial Mathematics (27.0305), Financial Analytics (30.7104), Business Analytics (30.7102), Econometrics and Quantitative Economics (45.0603) and Actuarial Science (52.1304) appear; no code in the 52.08 finance series does. Two programs both called a master's in finance can land on opposite sides of the line.

Find the CIP code next to your major on your Form I-20, compare it with the live list, and confirm with your DSO. If you think your program is miscoded, see our guide to a CIP code that is not on the STEM list. STEM OPT also requires an employer enrolled in E-Verify and a signed Form I-983 training plan, per USCIS's STEM OPT page, so ask HR whether the entity hiring you meets both.

OPT and H-1B rules that shape a banking offer (as of 2026-11)

OPT unemployment limitsIn effect90 days on OPT; 150 days in aggregate with STEM OPT
Wage-weighted H-1B selectionIn effect since 2026-02-27A Level IV registration is entered four times, a Level I once
FY2028 H-1B registrationNot announcedUSCIS must give at least 30 days' notice; March 2027 is an expectation only
OPT fee NPRMProposedComments close 2026-11-09; the school would be the legal payer (and could pass the cost on), and only DSO recommendations dated 60+ days after a final rule would be covered

How many H-1B lottery attempts does a banking offer give you?

It depends on your OPT length and on whether the bank registers you before you graduate. Take a senior graduating in May 2027 with an offer for a July 2027 analyst class, starting OPT around then. Registration months are expectations only: USCIS's registration page still shows FY2027 dates, and USCIS must announce a season at least 30 days ahead.

Worked timeline: cap seasons inside your status window (expected dates, as of 2026-11)

Cap seasonExpected registrationWhere you areNon-STEM degree (12 months of OPT)STEM-listed degree (up to 36 months)
FY2028Around March 2027 (not announced)Final semesterPossible, if the bank registers students before graduationPossible, same condition
FY2029Around March 2028On OPT, first analyst yearYes; OPT ends around July 2028Yes
FY2030Around March 2029On STEM OPTNo, OPT has endedYes
FY2031Around March 2030Late STEM OPTNoPossibly, if a petition can be filed before STEM OPT ends around July 2030

In this example the non-STEM path gives at most two cap seasons and the STEM path up to four. Under the wage-weighted selection rule, a registration's weight follows the highest DOL wage level the offered salary meets for that occupation and location; see how wage levels change lottery odds. The table shows what your status allows, not what the bank will do; its immigration counsel decides when to register you.

Three status details make or break this timeline:

Is AI shrinking analyst classes? The misconception and the data

Misconception: "AI will cut analyst classes by two-thirds." Correction: that line is one McKinsey partner's estimate quoted in Fortune (2026-06-07), not a measured cut. Revelio Labs reported (2026-10-13, updated 10-22) that junior roles at US banks are "4.7% below their October 2022 level" and concluded that "banks seem to be restructuring around AI rather than being automated by it."

Barclays said on 2026-10-22 it plans to cut about 5,000 roles (about 5% of its workforce) this year, linking the plan to AI-driven efficiency, with about 60% in support functions (CNBC; Banking Dive); press reports place most of the cuts outside the US. Junior seats are tighter than in 2022, not gone.

A sponsorship-ready checklist before your first round

  1. Find the CIP code next to your major on your Form I-20 and compare it with the DHS STEM Designated Degree Program List.
  2. Ask your DSO whether your program qualifies for STEM OPT and how your school handles CPT for summer internships.
  3. Search each target bank's legal entity in the USCIS H-1B Employer Data Hub and note its initial approvals by fiscal year.
  4. Download the latest LCA disclosure file from DOL's OFLC page to see the titles and locations the bank files for.
  5. Read each portal's work-authorization questions word for word and answer exactly what is asked.
  6. Email campus recruiting after an offer to confirm in writing whether and when the bank will register you for the H-1B.
  7. Take OPT start-date and cap-gap questions to your DSO, and petition timing to the bank's immigration attorney.

Common mistakes

Frequently asked questions

Do investment banks sponsor H-1B for analysts?

Some do and some do not, and policy can differ by group, office and year. Check the bank's own record in the USCIS H-1B Employer Data Hub, which now says it covers FY2009 through FY2026 Q4, and confirm with recruiting in writing at the offer stage. Sponsorship means the bank registers you in the lottery, and since 2026-02-27 selection is wage-weighted and never guaranteed.

What happens at an investment banking superday?

A superday is the final round, made up of several back-to-back interviews with analysts, associates, VPs and MDs, in person or virtual. Expect deeper technicals, a deal discussion, the same fit questions more than once and sometimes a short case or paper LBO. Interviewers compare notes afterward, so consistency across rooms matters as much as any single answer.

When should international students tell banks they need sponsorship?

Tell the bank when it asks, which is usually on the online application, and answer exactly the question asked. If you will need an H-1B to keep working after OPT, the truthful answer to the future-sponsorship question is yes. Raise the logistics with recruiting or HR rather than superday interviewers, and get the bank's H-1B plan in writing at the offer stage.

Is a non-STEM finance degree a problem for OPT in banking?

It does not stop you from working on post-completion OPT, but it limits you to 12 months instead of up to 36 months with the STEM extension, which means fewer H-1B cap seasons. The deciding factor is the CIP code next to your major on your Form I-20, not the word finance in the degree title. Check it against the DHS STEM list and confirm with your DSO (rules as of 2026-11-01).

What technical questions are asked in investment banking interviews?

Expect accounting (how the three statements link and the depreciation walk-through), valuation and the bridge from equity value to enterprise value, the DCF, and M&A questions such as accretion and dilution. Some groups add LBO and market questions. Interviewers grade how cleanly you walk through the mechanics, not memorized definitions.

How we checked this: on 2026-11-01 we read the USCIS, ICE SEVP, Study in the States, DOL, Federal Register and Federal Reserve pages above, the DHS STEM list PDF and the AAU v. DHS docket, and checked the Revelio, CNBC and Banking Dive figures against their pages.

This is general information, not legal or tax advice; your own I-20, EAD and notices, and your DSO or immigration attorney, govern your situation.
