Summer 2027 Internships for International Students: What's Closed, What's Open, and a CPT Plan B

Banking and top consulting are reportedly closed for summer 2027, big tech and the Big Four are still moving, and CPT just got harder. Here is the map and a fallback plan.

Part of our guide to Day 1 CPT.

If you are an F-1 student hunting for summer 2027 internships in October 2026, you face two clocks. Some recruiting cycles have closed. And Curricular Practical Training (CPT), the work authorization most interns rely on, was narrowed by federal guidance in August; your school may have paused it.

The short answer, as of October 14, 2026, based on industry reporting: bulge-bracket investment banking summer 2027 internships are effectively closed, and MBB consulting's main deadlines have passed. Summer 2027 SWE internships at big tech opened in July and August 2026. Big Four accounting recruiting runs August through October, so it is live now. And much of the market has not posted yet, since reported NACE data put 27% of internship recruiting in spring. The harder question is whether your school will let you work there. This guide covers both.

Status line, as of 2026-10-14

  • SEVP CPT broadcasts BCM 2608-01 (issued 2026-08-12) and BCM 2608-02 (issued 2026-08-24): in effect as guidance, challenged. AAU v. DHS was filed 2026-10-05. The preliminary-injunction hearing is set for 2026-11-06. No ruling yet.
  • OPT fees ($70,000 initial / $30,000 each subsequent): proposed, not in effect. The NPRM published 2026-10-08 and comments close 2026-11-09. Under the proposal, the school is the legal payer and may pass the cost on. CPT is outside its scope.
  • Recruiting timeline: reported. The sector dates below come from industry reporting, not an official calendar. Confirm each one on the employer's own careers page.

Summer 2027 internships: what's closed and what's open

Firms move dates, and some keep roles open after the main wave.

The spring share is the number most international students overlook. The same reported NACE data put 37% of full-time recruiting in spring, which matters if you graduate in 2027. We break that down in our post on the NACE 2026 spring recruiting timing shift.

Why chase an internship this hard? The NACE 2026 student survey found that 43% of graduates had an offer before graduation, and that paid interns with offers averaged $69,521 in offered salary, against $61,747 overall. For you, a return offer also means starting post-completion OPT with an employer that already knows your work, a stronger starting point for a later H-1B conversation.

Summer 2027 SWE internships: working the rolling window

Big tech reportedly opened summer 2027 SWE internships in July and August 2026, so some early interview slots are likely gone. Postings that are still live are still worth your time.

Accounting internships summer 2027 and the Big Four

Big Four recruiting reportedly runs August through October, so many accounting internships for summer 2027 are being decided now.

Spring 2027 internships and the spring recruiting wave

Spring 2027 internships come in two forms.

What changed with CPT in August 2026

CPT is authorized by your school's DSO and recorded on your I-20. You cannot authorize it yourself, and USCIS does not approve it. If the basics are new to you, start with what CPT is and how its rules work.

In August 2026, SEVP issued two broadcasts that changed how DSOs are told to read the rules:

TopicBefore Aug 2026What BCM 2608-01 / 2608-02 sayWhat to do differently
The core testEach school read "integral part of an established curriculum" its own wayCPT only "if its absence would make the attainment of a degree an impossibility and if the work associated with CPT is required for all students pursuing that degree"Ask whether your program has a required practicum, internship or co-op
Elective internship coursesCommonly used to authorize summer CPTElective-course CPT fails the "integral and required" testGet written DSO confirmation before relying on one
Who must do the trainingVariedIt must be done by "all students - foreign and American" in the programCheck whether domestic students in your degree also must complete it
Employer relationshipVaried by schoolAll CPT must be with employers that have cooperative agreements with the schoolAsk early whether your employer will sign one
Legal statusn/aSEVP says BCM 2608-02 is not a rule or final action; both are challenged in AAU v. DHSWatch for your school's notice after the 2026-11-06 hearing

Schools are responding unevenly. The Crimson reported on 2026-10-06 that five Harvard schools no longer authorize CPT, and that MIT, Penn and Wellesley paused CPT authorizations. Your school's policy is the one that governs you.

Day 1 CPT programs are neither "safe" nor "banned" under the guidance; they face the same standard and the same uncertainty. If you are in one, talk to your DSO, and to a licensed immigration attorney about status questions beyond what your DSO handles.

One rule has not changed: under the regulations, 12 months or more of full-time CPT makes you ineligible for post-completion OPT. Part-time CPT does not count toward that limit. Ask your DSO how this applies at your degree level.

Your CPT plan B

If your school pauses or narrows CPT, you still have options. Your DSO decides what your school will authorize, so take this list to that conversation.

A degree-required practicum or co-op

This is the option that best fits the new standard. If your program already requires a practicum, a capstone with an industry partner, or a co-op, ask whether a summer role can satisfy it. Ask too whether the employer can enter the cooperative agreement your school needs.

Pre-completion OPT

Pre-completion OPT lets you work before you finish your degree, once you have completed one full academic year. It is part-time (up to 20 hours a week) while school is in session and can be full-time during official breaks such as summer. The trade-offs:

On-campus employment and research

On-campus employment does not use CPT or OPT. You can generally work up to 20 hours a week during the term and full-time during breaks. A summer lab or campus project role is real resume material. Confirm with your DSO that it counts as on-campus; work for an off-campus partner may not.

Retarget toward a full-time role

If you graduate in 2027, put more energy into full-time roles that start on post-completion OPT; reported NACE data put 37% of full-time recruiting in spring. The 90-day OPT unemployment limit (150 days in total with the STEM extension) is a reason to start before graduation.

Your timeline from now to day one

  1. October 2026. Apply to live Big Four and big-tech postings. Ask your DSO: Is CPT being authorized for my program? Does my degree include a required practicum or co-op? Could I use pre-completion OPT this summer?
  2. Through 2026-11-06. Watch the AAU v. DHS hearing and your school's notices. Keep applying.
  3. November-December 2026. Get your DSO's answer in writing. If pre-completion OPT is in play, ask your DSO about timing, given USCIS processing times.
  4. January-March 2027. Work the spring wave: career fairs, mid-size and startup postings, referrals.
  5. March-April 2027. Before accepting, confirm the authorization route with your DSO and the employer's HR team, including the cooperative agreement.
  6. May-June 2027. Start only after your I-20 shows CPT for that employer and those dates, or your EAD is in your hands.

Common mistakes

Frequently asked questions

Is it too late to apply for summer 2027 internships?

Not across the board. Bulge-bracket banking is reported to be effectively closed and MBB main deadlines have reportedly passed. But big-tech summer 2027 recruiting reportedly opened in July and August 2026, and Big Four recruiting reportedly runs August through October. Reported NACE data put 27% of internship recruiting in spring, so a large share of 2027 internships may not be posted yet.

Can I still use CPT for a summer 2027 internship?

It depends on your school and your program. SEVP broadcasts BCM 2608-01 and 2608-02, issued in August 2026, limit CPT to training that is integral and required for every student in the degree. They are in effect as guidance and challenged in AAU v. DHS, with a hearing set for 2026-11-06. Several schools have stopped or paused CPT, so ask your DSO in writing before you accept an offer that depends on it.

What is a CPT plan B if my school paused CPT?

The main alternatives are a degree-required practicum or co-op that fits the new standard, pre-completion OPT, on-campus employment or research at your own university, and shifting your target to a full-time role on post-completion OPT. Each one has trade-offs for your OPT time and your STEM OPT eligibility, and your DSO decides what your school will authorize.

Are spring 2027 internships realistic for international students?

They can be, but timing matters. A spring-term internship falls during your academic term, so it needs CPT your school will authorize or pre-completion OPT, which is limited to part-time work while school is in session. Some accounting firms run winter or busy-season internships inside the spring term, so check with your DSO before you apply for a full-time role that overlaps your classes.
