Does American Airlines Sponsor H-1B Visas? IT, Data and Operations Research Roles in Fort Worth
USCIS made first decisions on 274 American Airlines H-1B workers in FY2024, but only 43 approvals were for new employment. Here is which Fort Worth roles fit OPT grads.

Part of our guide to companies that sponsor H-1B visas.
Does American Airlines sponsor H-1B? Yes, but mostly for people it already employs. In fiscal year 2024, USCIS made first decisions on 274 H-1B workers for AMERICAN AIRLINES INC of Fort Worth, Texas: 43 initial approvals, 2 initial denials, 228 continuing approvals and 1 continuing denial, a 98.9% approval rate, in our extract of the USCIS H-1B Employer Data Hub. The Hub shows no job titles, but the specialty-occupation test points to corporate IT, data and operations research roles, not pilot or airport jobs (our reading). None of the Fort Worth tech and analytics postings we read in early November 2026 mentioned sponsorship either way.
So the airline is a real sponsor, but a selective one for new entrants. Check before you spend OPT days on it.
Where the rules stand (as of 2026-11-01):
- Wage-weighted H-1B selection: in effect since 2026-02-27 under the weighted selection final rule. FY2028 registration: not announced. USCIS must announce the period at least 30 days ahead (8 CFR 214.2(h)(8)(iii)(A)(3)), so watch its registration page; March 2027 is only an expectation.
- OPT unemployment limits: in effect, unchanged: 90 days on post-completion OPT and 150 days in aggregate with STEM OPT, per the SEVIS Help Hub unemployment counter page.
- $100,000 H-1B payment (Proclamation 11069): in effect on paper; the fee is blocked and not being collected. The USCIS I-129 page (updated 2026-10-30) says a court vacated the guidance implementing it. Per USCIS's H-1B page, it never reached a change of status granted inside the US, the usual route from OPT to H-1B.
Does American Airlines sponsor H-1B visas? The short answer
American Airlines sponsors H-1B workers every year, but most of its activity is continuing employment. In FY2024, USCIS approved 271 of the 274 American Airlines H-1B workers it made a first decision on (98.9%), yet only 43 approvals were for new employment. For an OPT graduate, the realistic targets are IT, data engineering, analytics and operations research roles at its Fort Worth headquarters.
What do 43 initial and 228 continuing approvals mean?
USCIS's guide to the Data Hub counts as new employment a worker who "Will work for the same employer but in a different nonimmigrant classification." Our reading: an F-1 student working on OPT whom the airline then sponsors for H-1B lands in the initial column. The continuing figures in our extract cover the other petition types, such as extensions with the same employer, amendments and transfers from another H-1B employer.
American Airlines Inc, USCIS first decisions, FY2024 (as of 2026-11)
| Metric | FY2024 count |
|---|---|
| Initial approvals (new employment) | 43 |
| Initial denials | 2 |
| Continuing approvals | 228 |
| Continuing denials | 1 |
| Total decisions | 274 |
| Approval rate, approvals divided by all decisions | 98.9% |
Our arithmetic on those rows: the initial approval rate was 95.6% (43 of 45), and about one approval in six (15.9%) was for new employment. We quote FY2024 only; check the Hub itself for later fiscal years. Our American Airlines employer data page includes the same FY2024 row.
Two caveats from USCIS itself. The data "reflects USCIS' first decision," so appeals, revocations and still-pending petitions are excluded. And the city and state come from the employer's mailing address, which "is not necessarily the beneficiary(ies) work location."
What the numbers cannot tell you
The Hub counts workers by employer, not by team, job title or degree, so it cannot say whether the 43 new-employment approvals went to engineers or analysts, or how many came from OPT. As a private, for-profit company, American Airlines is not a cap-exempt employer (our reading), so a first-time H-1B worker there generally needs a lottery selection. Its regional carriers, such as Envoy Air and PSA Airlines, hire under their own names; check each legal employer separately.
Which American Airlines roles fit H-1B sponsorship?
The roles that fit are the ones whose postings ask for a bachelor's degree in a specific technical or quantitative field: IT software, data engineering, network planning and operations research, and supply chain analytics. USCIS's H-1B specialty occupations page requires "Attainment of a bachelor's or higher degree in a directly related specific specialty (or its equivalent)" as a minimum for entry into the occupation.
We read five American Airlines postings on Indeed at the start of November 2026, all listed for Fort Worth and posted on 2026-10-29 or 2026-10-30. That is a small sample, and Indeed's copy may be shortened.
American Airlines Fort Worth postings we read (as of 2026-11)
| Role, as titled | Minimum degree stated | Experience asked | Sponsorship line |
|---|---|---|---|
| Sr Associate Engineer / Engineer, IT Data | Bachelor's in CS, computer engineering, technology, CIS/MIS, engineering or related, or equivalent experience | 1+ year of software development and 1+ year of SQL analytics; Azure data lake | None either way |
| Sr Engineer, IT Software | Same degree list | 3+ years | None either way |
| Data Engineer/Sr Data Engineer, IT Analytics | Same degree list | 4+ years with SQL, Python and Spark; Azure | None either way |
| Analyst/Sr Analyst, Network Planning Projects | Bachelor's in engineering, operations research, data science, economics, CS or related | 2-5 years; SQL and Python | None either way |
| Analyst/Sr Analyst, Material Planning Strategy and Analysis | Bachelor's in supply chain, business analytics, data science, operations research or related | 3 years; SQL | None either way |
Three things stood out. The network planning analyst "partners closely with cross-functional leaders across Network Planning, Revenue Management, Alliances, IT, and Operations Research," so operations research is a named function, not a guess. Both IT data postings say the data domain "leans into Machine Learning and AI, as well as Data Science and Business Intelligence." And no posting carried an export-control "U.S. Person" line, the requirement that keeps many visa holders out of defense and aerospace manufacturing jobs.
The hard part is experience. Four of the five asked for two or more years. The most junior, the IT Data engineer role, asked for one year of software development and one of SQL; whether internships or pre-degree work count is the employer's call, so ask the recruiter. An Indeed search filtered to Fort Worth internships returned none at the start of November; ask your career center about American's early-career programs and check its careers site, jobs.aa.com.
A silent posting is normal, not a signal. In a single-vendor analysis by Match.dev of 2,718 engineering roles read on 2026-10-13, 88.1% of the roles' postings said nothing about sponsorship.
Do airlines sponsor pilots on H-1B?
Not as a realistic path in practice. Airline pilot hiring rests on FAA certificates and flight time rather than a bachelor's degree in one specific field, so the specialty-occupation test is a poor fit (our reading). The same goes for flight attendant, ramp and airport customer-service roles, and the Hub's lack of job titles means nobody outside the airline can count pilot petitions. Our guide to visa realities for pilots and aviation careers covers flight training, maintenance and the other aviation routes.
Does American Airlines hire international students on OPT and STEM OPT?
The corporate postings we read do not exclude you, and OPT is work authorization you already hold, so the airline needs no petition to hire you on it. STEM OPT adds employer duties. USCIS's STEM OPT extension page says the employer must "Be enrolled in E-Verify" and must sign "the Form I-983, Training Plan for STEM OPT Students."
E-Verify enrollment belongs to a specific employer, so check the exact hiring company with our E-Verify employer lookup guide before you plan a STEM extension around it. The same USCIS page says USCIS "will automatically extend your employment authorization for 180 days" for a timely STEM OPT filing; the 2026-10-14 final rule ending automatic extensions for certain EAD renewals did not change that.
Watch your clock. Each day without employer information in SEVIS counts toward the 90-day (or 150-day) limit, so a slow corporate process can cost you weeks. For a summer 2027 internship on CPT, note that SEVP's August 2026 CPT broadcasts are in effect but challenged: they allow CPT only where its absence "would make the attainment of a degree an impossibility," and some schools have paused approvals. The preliminary-injunction hearing in Association of American Universities v. DHS is set for 2026-11-06 at 3:00 p.m. (check the court docket for the outcome); ask your DSO how your school handles CPT.
Does American Airlines hire STEM OPT data scientists?
The work exists, under other titles. Both IT data postings name data science and machine learning, and the data engineering and network planning postings ask for SQL and Python, but an Indeed search for American Airlines data scientist roles in Fort Worth returned none at the start of November 2026. For STEM OPT, confirm role by role that the hiring entity is in E-Verify and will sign the I-983. Our operations research analyst sponsorship guide covers how OR and analytics degrees map onto H-1B job titles across industries.
How to check American Airlines' H-1B record yourself
- Open the USCIS H-1B Employer Data Hub, choose fiscal year 2024, and search "AMERICAN AIRLINES" rather than "American," which returns unrelated employers.
- Read the initial and continuing columns separately; initial approvals are the closer proxy for first-time H-1B workers, including OPT conversions.
- Search each related employer name you see on a posting, such as Envoy Air or PSA Airlines, because the Hub lists each petitioner by name and the last four digits of its tax ID.
- Download the LCA and PERM disclosure files from the Department of Labor's OFLC performance data page; the latest cover determinations through FY2026 Q3 (2026-06-30). An LCA is a DOL filing, not a USCIS approval.
- Read each posting and application form for work-authorization questions, and answer them truthfully.
- Ask the recruiter early: "Is this role open to candidates on OPT who will need H-1B sponsorship later?"
- Take OPT, STEM OPT and SEVIS questions to your DSO, and petition or green card strategy to a licensed immigration attorney.
Our walkthrough of how to check whether any company sponsors H-1B applies the same tools to other employers on your list.
Worked timeline: an operations research grad and American Airlines
You worked two years as an analyst before a STEM-designated MS in operations research, which you finished in May 2026. Since July 2026 you have worked on post-completion OPT for a Dallas analytics firm, with that employer recorded in SEVIS, and your OPT EAD runs to 2027-06-30 (dates for illustration). In November 2026 you apply for American's network planning analyst role, which asks for 2-5 years of experience.
| When | What happens | What it means for you |
|---|---|---|
| November 2026 | Recruiter screen asks about work authorization | Say you are on OPT and will need H-1B sponsorship later; ask whether this team sponsors |
| If hired, early 2027 | You change employers; SEVIS is updated with American as your school directs | Keep any gap between jobs short: days without employer information count toward the 90-day limit |
| Before 2027-06-30 | Your DSO recommends STEM OPT and you file the I-765 with a signed Form I-983 | Requires an E-Verify employer; filing before the OPT EAD expires keeps the 180-day automatic extension (in effect) |
| FY2028 registration, date not announced | American decides whether to register you | Selection is weighted by wage level, one entry at Level I up to four at Level IV; FY2027 ran March 4-19 |
| 2027-10-01 | Earliest FY2028 start if selected and a change of status is approved | A change of status granted inside the US was never covered by the $100,000 payment |
| If not selected | STEM OPT to about mid-2029 leaves up to two more seasons (our arithmetic) | Each season repeats the employer's registration decision |
The wage level comes from the offered wage for the occupation and work location, not the job title, though junior offers are the likeliest to land at Level I (our reading). Without a STEM degree, cap-gap matters more: for a timely cap-subject change-of-status petition, status and OPT work extend to April 1 of the fiscal year requested, or the petition start date if earlier, per USCIS's cap-gap page.
Does American Airlines sponsor green cards?
The postings we read are silent on green cards, and we found no public statement either way as of 2026-11-01. The evidence lives in DOL's PERM disclosure files on the same OFLC page; our PERM lookup guide shows how to search them by employer.
Expect a long queue wherever you work. DOL's FLAG processing times page showed PERM analyst review at January 2026 priority dates, averaging about 303 days, as of 2026-10-21. PERM rules are unchanged: DOL's PERM labor-market-test proposal (RIN 1205-AC29) cleared White House review on 2026-10-23 but has not been published. American Airlines is not among the eight employers in DOL's 2026-10-08 PERM suspension announcement, which in any case is not an H-1B suspension.
Your birth country matters as much as the employer. In the November 2026 Visa Bulletin, EB-2 Final Action dates were 2013-11-01 for India and 2025-04-01 for the rest of the world. USCIS requires the Dates for Filing chart for November I-485s (EB-2 India 2015-01-15, rest of world 2026-03-15), per its adjustment filing charts page; consular cases always use Final Action dates. Any December date is a forecast until that bulletin is out.
Common misconception: "American Airlines filed hundreds of H-1Bs, so it sponsors new grads easily."
Correction: Of 271 FY2024 approvals, 228 were continuing employment. The 43 new-employment approvals are the closer measure of first-time H-1B hires, and every posting we read asked for prior experience.
Where American Airlines fits in a Dallas-Fort Worth search
Treat American as one strong target in a wider DFW list, not the whole plan. Our Dallas-Fort Worth H-1B jobs guide maps the region's tech, finance and telecom sponsors, and other carriers have data pages too, including Southwest Airlines in Dallas and Delta Air Lines.
One Texas wrinkle: Gov. Abbott froze new H-1B petitions at state agencies and public universities from 2026-01-27 to 2027-05-31 unless the Texas Workforce Commission permits. It does not cover private employers such as American Airlines, but it narrows cap-exempt options at the region's public universities.
Common mistakes
- Reading 274 as 274 new hires. Most decisions were continuing employment; 43 were new-employment approvals.
- Treating a silent posting as a "no." The postings we read said nothing either way; ask the recruiter.
- Reading Fort Worth as the work location. The Hub's city is the employer's mailing address.
- Applying to pilot or airport roles expecting H-1B. Those jobs generally do not fit the specialty-occupation test in practice.
- Counting LCAs as sponsorship. An LCA is a DOL filing, not an approved petition.
- Letting one application eat your OPT clock. The 90-day or 150-day limit keeps running while a corporate process moves.
Frequently asked questions
Does American Airlines sponsor H-1B?
Yes. In fiscal year 2024 USCIS made first decisions on 274 H-1B workers for American Airlines Inc of Fort Worth and approved 271 (98.9%). Only 43 of those approvals were for new employment; 228 were continuing employment. The postings we read in early November 2026 were silent on sponsorship, so ask the recruiter about each role.
Does American Airlines hire international students?
Its corporate postings do not exclude them. The five Fort Worth IT and analytics postings we read in early November 2026 said nothing about sponsorship or citizenship. Four asked for two or more years of experience and the most junior asked for one. OPT lets you start without sponsorship; STEM OPT also needs an E-Verify employer and a signed Form I-983.
Do airlines sponsor pilots on H-1B?
Not as a realistic path in practice, in our reading. H-1B covers specialty occupations that require a bachelor's degree in a directly related specific specialty, while airline pilot hiring is built on FAA certificates and flight time. USCIS data does not report job titles, so no one outside the airline can tell whether any of its H-1B workers are pilots.
Does American Airlines sponsor green cards?
Its postings do not say, and we found no public statement either way as of 2026-11-01. Look for its PERM labor certifications in the Department of Labor disclosure files, whose latest public release covers FY2026 Q3. PERM rules are unchanged; DOL's PERM labor-market-test proposal (RIN 1205-AC29) cleared White House review on 2026-10-23 but has not been published.
Does American Airlines hire STEM OPT data scientists?
Its IT data domain says it leans into machine learning, AI, data science and business intelligence, and its data engineering and network planning postings ask for SQL and Python. Before you count on STEM OPT there, confirm the hiring entity is enrolled in E-Verify and will sign Form I-983. OPT unemployment limits are 90 days, or 150 in total with STEM OPT, as of 2026-11-01.

How we checked this: the FY2024 figures come from our extract of USCIS Employer Data Hub records; we read the USCIS, SEVP and DOL pages above and five American Airlines postings on Indeed at the start of November 2026, and took policy status from our 2026-11-01 facts review.
This is general information, not legal or tax advice; your own I-20, EAD and notices, your DSO and a licensed immigration attorney govern your situation.
