Does Thermo Fisher Sponsor H-1B Visas? Lab, Field and Manufacturing Roles for International Scientists
USCIS recorded 32 initial-employment H-1B approvals for Thermo Fisher in FY2024. Whether your lab, field or manufacturing offer leads to one depends on the duties and the degree the job requires.

Part of our guide to companies that sponsor H-1B visas.
Does Thermo Fisher sponsor H-1B? Yes. For fiscal year 2024, the USCIS H-1B Employer Data Hub shows THERMO FISHER SCIENTIFIC INC, with a Waltham, Massachusetts address, at 32 initial-employment approvals and no initial denials, plus 112 continuing approvals and 3 continuing denials. Whether your own offer leads to a petition depends on the role: a scientist job that requires a specific degree is a very different petition from a technician job that accepts an associate degree.
Status as of November 1, 2026. Wage-weighted H-1B selection is in effect (since 2026-02-27). FY2028 registration is not announced, and USCIS must give at least 30 days' notice. Policy Alert PA-2026-05 is in effect (since 2026-08-05) and challenged in court; it lets USCIS deny any benefit request, OPT and STEM OPT I-765s included, without first sending a Request for Evidence (RFE) when required initial evidence is missing. The $100,000 H-1B payment is blocked: courts vacated the agency policies behind it, so it is not collected, though Proclamation 11069 stands on paper.
Does Thermo Fisher sponsor H-1B? The answer in one paragraph
Thermo Fisher does sponsor H-1B workers. USCIS recorded 32 initial-employment approvals for it in FY2024, none denied, and 112 continuing approvals against 3 denials. For an F-1 graduate, the usual route is a scientist or engineering role that requires a specific degree, then OPT and STEM OPT time while entering the wage-weighted H-1B lottery.
For the wider sector, including cap-exempt research institutes, see our biotech and life sciences H-1B sponsorship guide.
What Thermo Fisher's FY2024 H-1B numbers show
Thermo Fisher in the USCIS H-1B Employer Data Hub, FY2024 (petitioner THERMO FISHER SCIENTIFIC INC; as of 2026-11)
| Measure (FY2024) | Count | What it generally covers |
|---|---|---|
| Initial-employment approvals | 32 | New employment, where a first H-1B after OPT (usually a cap case) lands |
| Initial-employment denials | 0 | None |
| Continuing-employment approvals | 112 | Extensions, amendments and, generally, moves from other H-1B employers |
| Continuing-employment denials | 3 | Three continuing cases denied |
| Total first decisions | 147 | 144 approved, about 98.0% (our arithmetic) |
USCIS says the Hub "has data on the first decisions USCIS makes on petitions for initial and continuing employment." Four limits apply:
- It counts first decisions, not hires. USCIS's Data Hub glossary describes each figure as a count of workers approved or denied, by fiscal year of decision, without appeals or revocations.
- It groups filers by tax ID. The Hub "identifies employers by the last four digits of their tax identification." Thermo Fisher's about page lists brands including Thermo Scientific, Applied Biosystems, Invitrogen, Gibco, Fisher Scientific, Patheon and PPD; a brand may hire through another legal entity, so also search the entity on your offer.
- It shows no job titles, wages or worksites. Its city is the petitioner's mailing address. DOL's Labor Condition Application (LCA) files carry titles, wages and worksites (step 2 below).
- FY2024 is the latest full year we quote. The Hub now covers "fiscal year 2009 through fiscal year 2026 (quarter 4)"; pull newer figures there.
Our Thermo Fisher Scientific employer page tracks the same petitioner across years.
Which Thermo Fisher roles fit the H-1B specialty-occupation test?
The test is about the job, not the company. USCIS's H-1B specialty occupations page (updated 2026-09-21) requires "Attainment of a bachelor's or higher degree in a directly related specific specialty (or its equivalent)" as the minimum for entry, and defines directly related as "a logical connection between the required degree, or its equivalent, and the duties of the position." The regulation is 8 CFR 214.2(h)(4).
A position must meet one of four criteria on that page: the degree is normally the minimum for the occupation; it is normally required for parallel positions among similar organizations in the industry; the employer normally requires it; or the duties are "so specialized, complex, or unique" that the knowledge is normally associated with that degree. Thermo Fisher's careers site sorts openings into areas including Research & Development, Laboratory Services, Operations, Quality & Regulatory, Customer & Tech Support and Clinical Research, and the question plays out differently in each.
How the specialty-occupation question usually plays out by Thermo Fisher career area (our reading of USCIS's criteria, as of 2026-11; not a determination for any role)
| Career area | Typical titles | Easier to document when | Harder to document when |
|---|---|---|---|
| Research & Development | Associate Scientist, Scientist | The posting requires a bachelor's or higher in chemistry, biochemistry, molecular biology or another named field, and the duties involve method development or data interpretation | It accepts "any science degree" or years of experience instead |
| Laboratory Services | Lab analyst, research associate, lab technician | Analyst work needs a chemistry or microbiology degree and independent technical judgment | The minimum is an associate degree and the duties are routine sample handling |
| Operations | Manufacturing, process or automation engineer; production associate | An engineering title carries an engineering degree requirement | Operator and production roles with a high-school or associate minimum |
| Quality & Regulatory | QC analyst, quality engineer, regulatory specialist | The degree matches the duties, such as chemistry for QC testing | The work is document routing with a general-degree minimum |
| Customer & Tech Support | Field service engineer, field application scientist | Instrument troubleshooting requires an engineering or science degree | Duties look like general customer service |
| Clinical Research | Clinical research associate, data manager | A life-science or health degree is tied to monitoring or data duties | The role is mainly scheduling and coordination |
For Quality & Regulatory, see our regulatory affairs specialist H-1B guide.
Why "lab technician" is the hard case
Technician postings often set an associate degree, or a bachelor's "or equivalent experience", as the minimum. When the employer's own minimum is not a directly related bachelor's degree, the employer-requirement criterion is hard to meet and the duties must carry the case. Entry-level pay also tends to sit at lower wage levels, which means fewer lottery entries (below).
The title does not settle it either way: a "Scientist I" doing routine sample preparation raises the same question, while a technician role built around method validation that requires a chemistry degree may be documented differently. Our guide to answering an H-1B specialty occupation RFE shows what adjudicators look for, and the employer and its immigration attorney decide whether to file.
Field service and manufacturing roles
Field roles move between customer sites, and an LCA covers specific places of employment, so ask HR how your worksites will be handled. In manufacturing, the line usually falls between engineering titles that require an engineering degree and production roles that do not.
Why job title and duties matter more under PA-2026-05
Because an RFE is no longer a dependable second chance. PA-2026-05 says that "when a benefit requestor fails to submit all required initial evidence, USCIS in its discretion may deny the benefit request for lack of initial evidence or for ineligibility or issue an RFE for the missing initial evidence." It applies to requests pending or filed on or after 2026-08-05 and makes 12 weeks the maximum RFE response period, not the standard.
The policy is challenged in AAUP v. Mullin (D. Mass. No. 1:26-cv-14527, filed 2026-10-05), which BAL describes as an APA and due-process suit; no ruling had been reported as of 2026-11-01. No USCIS data yet covers decisions made under the policy.
What it means for a Thermo Fisher candidate (our reading):
- The petition has to be complete when filed. The job description your employer submits is evidence and must describe the real job; never ask anyone to describe it as something it is not.
- Your diligence moves earlier. Before you accept, learn whether the role as written is one the company will sponsor.
- Your own OPT and STEM OPT filings are covered too. An I-765 missing required evidence, such as the DSO-endorsed I-20 or the employer's E-Verify company ID for STEM OPT, may be denied without an RFE. Ask your DSO to review the packet first.
Thermo Fisher OPT and STEM OPT: what to confirm before you accept
Post-completion OPT needs no sponsorship: the EAD is your own work authorization, so an OPT hire is a hiring decision, not a filing. The SEVIS Help Hub unemployment counter allows 90 days of unemployment on OPT and 150 in aggregate on STEM OPT.
STEM OPT is where employer duties begin. USCIS's STEM OPT page (updated 2026-01-30) requires the employer to "Be enrolled in E-Verify", to offer terms "commensurate with those of similarly situated U.S. workers in duties, hours, and compensation", and to sign a Form I-983 training plan describing "the direct relationship between the STEM OPT opportunity and the student's qualifying STEM degree." The I-765 can be filed up to 90 days before the OPT EAD expires and within 60 days of the DSO's recommendation; a timely filing keeps the 180-day automatic extension, which the 2026-10-14 EAD rule did not change. Our STEM OPT E-Verify employer requirement explainer covers the checks.
Two dates to watch:
- E-Verify runs through 2026-12-11 under the continuing resolution (P.L. 119-103, sec. 101(6); see CRS R49353) and lapses with it unless Congress passes funding; in the 2025 shutdown it went offline for about a week from 2025-10-01.
- The OPT fee is proposed, not law. The NPRM would have the school, the legal payer, pay $70,000 before an initial OPT recommendation and $30,000 before each later one, STEM OPT included; schools may pass the cost on. It would reach only DSO recommendations dated 60 or more days after a final rule. Comments close 2026-11-09.
How the H-1B lottery works for a Thermo Fisher offer
As a for-profit company rather than a university or other cap-exempt employer, Thermo Fisher is generally cap-subject, so a first H-1B there needs a registration selection. Since 2026-02-27, selection is weighted by wage level, from four entries at Level IV to one at Level I, under the weighted-selection final rule.
- FY2028 registration is not announced. USCIS's registration page still described FY2027 on 2026-11-01, and 8 CFR 214.2(h)(8)(iii)(A)(3) requires 30 days' notice. March 2027 is an expectation, not a date.
- Cap-gap bridges the summer. For a timely cap-subject change-of-status petition, USCIS's cap-gap page extends F-1 status and OPT work "until April 1 of the fiscal year for which such H-1B status is being requested", or the petition start date if earlier. It ends if the petition is denied, withdrawn, revoked or rejected.
- The $100,000 payment is not being collected. The USCIS I-129 page (updated 2026-10-30) says a court "vacated agency guidance implementing the $100,000 payment requirement", and "If this order is later lifted, DHS still plans to collect the payment." A change of status granted inside the US was never covered; a denied one would be.
A worked scenario (hypothetical). You finish an MS in biochemistry in May 2026, and your OPT EAD runs 2026-07-01 to 2027-06-30. Thermo Fisher offers an Associate Scientist role requiring a chemistry or biochemistry degree, and the recruiter confirms the requisition supports H-1B. If FY2028 registration opens in early 2027 and you are selected, a change-of-status petition with cap-gap could carry you to an H-1B start on 2027-10-01. If not, and the hiring entity is enrolled in E-Verify, a timely STEM OPT filing (the 90-day window opens 2027-04-01) and its approval would run your work authorization to 2029-06-30, leaving at least one more registration season. Waltham sits in the Boston market, so also target the cap-exempt universities and hospitals in our Boston biotech and university H-1B guide.
Common misconception, then correction
The claim: "Thermo Fisher sponsors H-1B, so any Thermo Fisher job will be sponsored."
The correction: the FY2024 record (32 initial approvals, none denied) shows Thermo Fisher files H-1B petitions. It does not show that a given hiring manager can sponsor a given requisition, or that a technician role meets the specialty-occupation test. Sponsorship is decided per role, and under PA-2026-05 the first filing carries more weight (our reading).
Does Thermo Fisher sponsor green cards?
The H-1B Data Hub cannot answer this. Employer green cards usually start with PERM labor certification; our guide to checking whether a company sponsors green cards with PERM data explains the search. As of 2026-11-01:
- The latest public PERM file is FY2026 Q3 (determinations through 2026-06-30), on DOL's OFLC performance data page.
- Thermo Fisher is not among the eight employers DOL said on 2026-10-08 it had suspended from PERM (Microsoft, Adobe, Cognizant, Infosys, TCS, Wipro, HCL and Capgemini). DOL has published no written notice or end date, and Mayer Brown notes that the action "does not suspend any employer from the H-1B program".
- PERM rules have not changed. DOL's PERM labor-market-test proposal (RIN 1205-AC29) cleared White House review on 2026-10-23 but is unpublished; current 20 CFR 656.17 recruitment rules apply.
- PERM is slow. DOL's FLAG processing times showed analyst review at January 2026 priority dates as of 2026-10-21, averaging 303 days for August 2026 determinations.
The wait after PERM and the I-140 depends on your country of birth.

How to check Thermo Fisher sponsorship yourself, step by step
- Search the USCIS H-1B Employer Data Hub for "Thermo Fisher" and the entity name on your offer letter; note initial and continuing approvals by year.
- Download the latest LCA disclosure file (FY2026 Q3) from DOL's OFLC performance data page and filter by employer for titles, wage levels and worksites like yours.
- Read the posting on jobs.thermofisher.com for its stated minimum degree and work-authorization language, then ask the recruiter whether that requisition supports H-1B.
- Look up the legal entity in the E-Verify Employer Search, which shows "The name the employer used when they enrolled in E-Verify", and ask HR for the company ID your STEM OPT I-765 needs.
- Confirm with HR who signs your Form I-983, and get it to your DSO before the STEM OPT recommendation.
- Search DOL's PERM disclosure files for the same entity and similar titles.
- Take OPT, STEM OPT and SEVIS questions to your DSO, and petition or status-strategy questions to a licensed immigration attorney.
Common mistakes
- Reading 147 as "Thermo Fisher hires 147 international grads a year." It is 147 first decisions; 32 were initial employment.
- Treating the title as the answer. USCIS looks at the duties and the real minimum degree, not the word "Scientist".
- Counting on an RFE to fix a gap. Under PA-2026-05, missing initial evidence can mean a denial with no RFE.
- Filing STEM OPT after the OPT EAD expires. A late filing gets no 180-day automatic extension.
- Confusing the PERM suspension with an H-1B ban. The eight named employers lost PERM processing, not H-1B, and Thermo Fisher is not one of them.
Frequently asked questions
Does Thermo Fisher sponsor H-1B?
Yes. For FY2024 the USCIS H-1B Employer Data Hub shows THERMO FISHER SCIENTIFIC INC with 32 initial-employment approvals and no initial denials, plus 112 continuing approvals and 3 continuing denials. Sponsorship is still decided role by role, so ask the recruiter whether your requisition supports H-1B before a long interview loop.
Does Thermo Fisher hire OPT students?
Its careers site has a Students & New Grads category, and an OPT hire needs no visa filing because the post-completion OPT EAD is your own work authorization; whether a posting accepts OPT candidates is the recruiter's call. STEM OPT adds employer duties, including E-Verify enrollment and a signed Form I-983. As of 2026-11-01, OPT allows 90 days of unemployment, or 150 in aggregate with STEM OPT.
Do lab technician roles qualify for H-1B?
Not by title. USCIS asks whether the job requires a bachelor's or higher degree in a directly related specific specialty, judged on the actual duties and the employer's real minimum requirement. Technician postings that accept an associate degree or experience are harder to document than scientist roles requiring a chemistry or biology degree. The employer and its immigration attorney decide whether to file.
Does Thermo Fisher sponsor green cards?
The H-1B Data Hub does not cover green cards, so search DOL's PERM disclosure files (the latest runs through 2026-06-30) under each Thermo Fisher entity name. Thermo Fisher is not among the eight employers DOL said on 2026-10-08 it had suspended from PERM. As of 2026-10-21, DOL analysts were reviewing PERM cases with January 2026 priority dates.
Is Thermo Fisher E-Verify for STEM OPT?
This page does not confirm enrollment for any Thermo Fisher entity. STEM OPT requires an E-Verify employer, so look up the legal entity on your offer letter in the official E-Verify Employer Search and ask HR for the E-Verify company ID your Form I-765 needs. E-Verify runs through 2026-12-11 under the current continuing resolution and lapses then unless Congress passes funding.
