I-20 Travel Signature: How to Get One, How Long It Lasts, and What CBP Checks Over Winter Break
Your I-20 needs a current DSO travel signature on page 2 to re-enter after winter break. How to request one, how long it lasts, and what CBP checks.

A travel signature on your I-20 is a dated endorsement your designated school official (DSO) adds to the Travel Endorsement section on page 2 of Form I-20. You request it from your school's international office, usually through its online portal, before you leave the US. As of November 1, 2026, it must be no more than one year old on the day you re-enter while you are enrolled, and no more than six months old if you are on post-completion OPT or STEM OPT. An electronically signed I-20 counts, as long as you print it and carry it.
Status line, as of 2026-11-01. The travel-endorsement rules are in effect and unchanged. Duration of status (D/S) still applies: the DHS fixed-admission final rule (91 FR 44976) has been blocked by a federal court since 2026-09-14, and USCIS "will proceed under the previous regulatory provisions" (USCIS Form I-539 page). Summary judgment is briefed (replies due 11-02) and DHS's First Circuit appeal is pending (opening brief due 11-09). A ruling can come any time after 11-02, so check the district court docket before you fly. Under the State Department's 2025-09-18 interview-waiver update (in effect since 2025-10-01), F, M and J visa applicants, renewals included, interview in person.
How long is an I-20 travel signature valid?
An I-20 travel signature is valid for one year from the date your DSO signs it while you are enrolled, and for six months while you are on post-completion OPT or STEM OPT. What matters is whether it is still inside that window on the day you re-enter the United States, not the day you leave. A signature is not used up by one trip; it covers any re-entry inside the window.
Both numbers come from primary text. The sample Form I-20 that SEVP posts (edition 11/30/2025) prints this above the DSO signature lines on page 2: "Each endorsement is valid for one year." For OPT, 8 CFR 214.2(f)(13)(ii), reproduced on ICE's SEVP regulations page, says the EAD "must be used in combination with a Form I-20 or successor form endorsed for reentry by the DSO within the last six months." Schools apply the same six months on STEM OPT, the extension of post-completion OPT; Cornell's OPT travel page puts it plainly: "you need to have the travel line on your I-20 signed every six months."
Boston University's ISSO states the counting rule on its current travel advisory: "A travel signature is considered valid if it is dated no more than one year before the date you expect to return to the U.S." Where your school's instructions differ from this summary, follow your DSO.
Travel signature validity by situation (as of 2026-11)
| Your situation | Signature must be dated within | What else you need | Source |
|---|---|---|---|
| Enrolled F-1 student returning to the same school | 1 year before re-entry | Active SEVIS record, valid passport and visa | I-20 page 2 |
| Post-completion OPT, EAD approved | 6 months before re-entry | EAD card in hand; job letter if you have one | 8 CFR 214.2(f)(13)(ii) |
| STEM OPT | 6 months before re-entry | EAD card in hand; job letter if you have one | 8 CFR 214.2(f)(13)(ii) |
| OPT or STEM OPT application pending | A signature does not remove the risk | Leaving is "not recommended" | Study in the States |
| F-2 spouse or child | Each dependent's own I-20 is endorsed; ask your DSO which window applies | Their own passport and F-2 visa | I-20 page 3 |
| Away more than five months | Ask your DSO before you go | The I-20 says F-1 students "may leave the United States and return within a period of five months" | I-20 page 3 |
How do you get a travel signature on your I-20?
You ask your school's international office, almost always through its student portal or a request form, and a DSO either signs your existing I-20 or issues a new, electronically signed one.
- Open page 2 of your most recent Form I-20 and find the latest date under Travel Endorsement. Add one year (enrolled) or six months (OPT or STEM OPT) and compare it with your return flight.
- Bring your record up to date. Register for spring 2027 if your school requires it before endorsing, keep your US address current, and on OPT report employer details as your school instructs, because days without employer information count toward the unemployment counter.
- Submit the request in your school's international-student portal, often labelled "travel signature" or "I-20 reprint," with your departure and return dates and, on OPT, your EAD and an employment letter if asked.
- Review the endorsed I-20. Check your name, SEVIS ID, program end date and the new signature date. If your program, funding or end date changed, expect a new I-20 rather than a signature on the old one: the form's instructions say that if there have been substantive changes, "the DSO should issue and sign a new Form I-20 that includes those changes."
- Print the electronically signed Form I-20 and sign the page 1 student attestation the way your school instructs.
- Pack the printed I-20 in your carry-on with your passport, F-1 visa, EAD and job letter if on OPT, recent financial documents and previous I-20s. Study in the States: "Be sure to hand-carry all of these items and do not put them in your checked baggage."
How early should you request a travel signature before winter break?
As soon as you know your dates. No federal rule sets a deadline, and turnaround is set by each school, so read your office's posted processing time and any holiday cutoff. Thanksgiving falls on 2026-11-26 and requests pile up before finals, so asking in the first half of November leaves time to correct an error. If you also need a new F-1 visa stamp, BU's ISSO advises allowing "at least 30 days for visa processing"; check appointment estimates on the State Department's Global Visa Wait Times page, which is updated monthly, rather than a screenshot someone posted.

Is an electronic or emailed I-20 signature accepted at the border?
Yes. SEVP formally adopted electronic signatures in policy guidance dated October 12, 2021, announced in Broadcast Message 2111-02 on November 1, 2021. You still need a paper copy in hand.
The guidance says "School officials may sign all signature fields on the Form I-20 using electronic signatures produced with software programs or applications," and schools may email the signed form or post it to a secure portal. The travel endorsement is one of those fields. The broadcast adds that SEVP worked with DHS, State and the Social Security Administration "to ensure continued acceptance of electronically signed Forms I-20." The instruction for you:
"Upon receipt of the electronically transmitted Form I-20, students should print a copy to present at any required visa interview and upon arrival at a U.S. port of entry."
Common misconception, then correction. "An emailed I-20 is only a copy, so CBP needs a wet-ink DSO signature." Not since October 12, 2021: SEVP's guidance accepts a DSO's electronic signature on the travel endorsement, and asks you for a printed copy, not a PDF on your phone.
Do you need a new travel signature while on OPT?
Usually, yes. On post-completion OPT or STEM OPT the endorsement must be within the last six months, so the signature on your graduation I-20 lapses partway through your OPT year.
ICE's SEVP travel page says that once USCIS approves your OPT, "you will be expected to have your EAD in hand to re-enter the United States, in addition to your Form I-20, valid passport and visa, and a letter of employment if you have one." It also warns: "If you exceed the limits on unemployment while outside the United States, you will not be eligible to re-enter." The limits are in effect and unchanged as of 2026-11-01: 90 days on post-completion OPT, 150 in aggregate with STEM OPT. Days abroad without employer information in SEVIS still count. Our guide to traveling on OPT, the re-entry documents and the pending-I-765 trap covers the job letter and passport validity in detail.
If your OPT application is still pending
For December graduates, the official guidance points toward staying. Study in the States' page on traveling as an F or M student says: "If you have a pending practical training application, it is not recommended that you leave the United States." ICE's travel page is softer ("should be undertaken with caution") and notes USCIS may send a request for evidence while you are away. Cornell, like Johns Hopkins and USC, advises against international travel until the EAD arrives, warning about a biometrics appointment: "If you are outside the U.S. and miss the appointment, your case could be delayed or denied." As a dated snapshot, the USCIS processing-times tool showed 80% of I-765 (c)(3) F-1 student cases completed within 5 months on 2026-11-01; check the live figure. A fresh signature changes none of this. Talk to your DSO before you book, and to an immigration attorney if your situation is unusual.
What if your travel signature expires while you're abroad?
Email your DSO before you book the return flight and ask for a newly endorsed I-20. Because SEVP lets schools sign electronically and send the form by email or portal, a DSO can usually endorse an I-20 for a student who is outside the US, and you print it where you are. Ask how long your office takes for remote requests.
If you arrive with an expired endorsement anyway, admission is the CBP officer's decision. Study in the States says "the officer has discretion to issue you a Form I-515A," which allows "temporary admission into the United States for 30 days." Within 30 days of entry you, working with your DSO, would email SEVP the I-515A, a signed I-20, your I-94, a copy of your admission stamp and your I-901 receipt. The officer is not required to issue one and can refuse admission, so the I-515A is what happens when something went wrong, not a plan. If your status itself is in question, talk to your DSO and a licensed immigration attorney.
A worked example for winter break 2026-27
Two hypothetical students check page 2 on 2026-11-01:
| Master's student (enrolled) | Engineer on STEM OPT | |
|---|---|---|
| Latest travel signature | 2026-01-08 | 2026-06-20 |
| Validity window | 1 year | 6 months |
| Good for re-entry through about | 2027-01-08 | 2026-12-20 |
| Departure | 2026-12-17 | 2026-12-19 |
| Planned re-entry | 2027-01-12 | 2027-01-03 |
| Verdict | Expires 4 days before return | Valid on departure, expired on return |
| What to do | Request a new signature in early November | Same, and carry the EAD and job letter |
Both pass a quick glance in November; both land with an expired endorsement.
Winter 2026-27 checklist (as of 2026-11-01)
- D/S still applies. The fixed-admission rule is blocked, so your I-94 should read D/S after you return. See I-94 admit-until date vs D/S if it shows a calendar date.
- Travel signature. One year enrolled, six months on OPT or STEM OPT, counted from re-entry; request it in the first half of November.
- OPT pending. Schools advise staying until the EAD arrives; confirm with your DSO.
- Visa stamp. If your F-1 visa has expired, a new one means an in-person interview, applied for in your country of nationality or residence; BU's ISSO advises allowing at least 30 days.
- Travel ban. Proclamation 10998 (in effect since 2026-01-01, unchanged as of 2026-11-01) restricts visas for nationals of 39 countries: 19 fully and 20 partially, with new F visas barred for every partial-list country except Turkmenistan. Visas issued earlier were not revoked, but a student from a listed country who needs a new stamp abroad may not get one; see an immigration attorney before leaving.
For the whole-trip plan (flights, appointments, the grace period near graduation), use our winter break travel checklist for F-1 students.
What does CBP check when you return over winter break?
The officer checks that you are admissible as an F-1 student: passport, visa, an I-20 with a current endorsement, an active SEVIS record and, on OPT, your EAD. No signature guarantees admission; the officer decides.
What to hand-carry, and what the officer looks at (as of 2026-11)
| Item | What is checked | Note |
|---|---|---|
| Passport | Valid at least six months after re-entry, per ICE's travel page | ICE says "in most cases"; ask your DSO about exceptions |
| F-1 visa | Unexpired, unless you are visa-exempt | Renewals are in-person interviews |
| Form I-20 | Endorsement within 1 year, or 6 months on OPT | Printed; e-signature is fine |
| SEVIS record | Active, I-901 fee paid | Your DSO can confirm before you leave |
| Financial evidence | Support for tuition and living costs | Listed in the I-20's admission instructions |
| EAD and job letter | Card in hand on OPT or STEM OPT | Job letter if you have one |
| Face photo | Noncitizens may be photographed on entry and exit | Rule in effect since 2025-12-26 |
| Phone and laptop | May be searched | Basic searches need no suspicion |
On that last row, CBP's border search of electronic devices page reports 52,081 device searches across all international travellers in the first three quarters of FY2026, against 39,251 a year earlier; it puts the full FY2025 total of 55,318 at "less than 0.01 percent" of arriving travellers. Under Directive 3340-049B (in effect since 2026-01-01) a basic search needs no suspicion, while an advanced search needs reasonable suspicion or a national-security concern; see our guide to CBP device searches under Directive 3340-049B. After you land, download your I-94 from CBP and check that it shows F-1 and D/S.
Common mistakes
- Counting from departure. The endorsement must be valid on the day you re-enter.
- Assuming 12 months on OPT. It is six months on post-completion OPT and STEM OPT.
- Showing a PDF on your phone. Print the electronically signed I-20.
- Checking the I-20 in your suitcase. Hand-carry every document.
- Leaving with OPT pending. Study in the States says it is "not recommended."
- Believing pages that say D/S ended. Some still say the D/S rule took effect on September 15, 2026. It did not: a federal court blocked it on 2026-09-14.
Frequently asked questions
How long is an I-20 travel signature valid?
A DSO travel signature is valid for one year while you are enrolled and for six months while you are on post-completion OPT or STEM OPT, counted back from the day you re-enter the United States. The one-year rule is printed on page 2 of the current Form I-20, and the six-month rule comes from 8 CFR 214.2(f)(13)(ii). Both were in effect and unchanged as of November 1, 2026.
Is an electronic or emailed I-20 signature accepted at the border?
Yes. SEVP policy guidance dated October 12, 2021 lets DSOs electronically sign all signature fields on the Form I-20, including the travel endorsement, and send it by email or a secure school portal. SEVP says students should print a copy to present at a visa interview and at the port of entry, so carry the printed page rather than a PDF on your phone.
What if my travel signature expires while I am abroad?
Email your DSO before you book the return flight and ask for a newly endorsed I-20, which SEVP allows the school to sign electronically and send to you abroad for printing. If you arrive with an expired endorsement, the CBP officer decides whether to admit you, and may issue a Form I-515A for a temporary 30-day admission or may refuse entry. Do not plan a trip around that outcome.
Do I need a new travel signature while on OPT?
Usually yes. On post-completion OPT or STEM OPT your I-20 must be endorsed for reentry within the last six months, so a signature from graduation will not last through a full OPT year. You also need your EAD card in hand and, if you have one, a letter of employment. If your OPT application is still pending, Study in the States says leaving is not recommended.
How early should I request a travel signature before winter break?
Request it as soon as you know your dates, ideally in the first half of November 2026, because processing times vary by school and international offices tend to be busiest just before the break. If you also need a new F-1 visa, which now means an in-person interview, Boston University's ISSO advises allowing at least 30 days for visa processing.
