Memphis H-1B Jobs: FedEx, St. Jude, AutoZone and Methodist Le Bonheur for Logistics and Research Talent
Memphis has a short, concentrated sponsor list. Here is how to read the FedEx, St. Jude, AutoZone and Methodist Le Bonheur numbers and pick the right door on OPT.

Part of our guide to H-1B jobs by state and city.
Memphis H-1B jobs are concentrated in a short list of employers. In the USCIS H-1B Employer Data Hub extract this site uses, the 17 Memphis employers with at least 25 decisions each logged 2,315 H-1B petition decisions across FY2024 to FY2026 (FY2026 is a partial year in this extract). Federal Express Corporation leads with 755, followed by St. Jude Children's Research Hospital (352 and 254 under two spellings of its name), FedEx Dataworks (162), AutoZone (161), FedEx Freight (106) and Methodist Le Bonheur Healthcare (100). First-time H-1Bs at FedEx and AutoZone are cap-subject. St. Jude may file some roles cap-exempt, but that is something you confirm, not assume.
Status as of November 1, 2026. Wage-weighted H-1B selection is in effect (since 2026-02-27). FY2028 registration is not announced: USCIS must give at least 30 days' notice, and March 2027 is only an expectation. The $100,000 H-1B payment is blocked by court orders and not being collected, although Proclamation 11069 stays in effect on paper until 2027-09-21. A draft USCIS rule, "Reforming the H-1B Nonimmigrant Visa Classification Program" (RIN 1615-AD00), whose agenda abstract mentions "revising eligibility for cap exemptions", has been under OIRA review at the White House since 2026-08-24, with no published text.
Which companies sponsor H-1B in Memphis?
The biggest Memphis H-1B sponsors are Federal Express Corporation, St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, FedEx Dataworks, AutoZone, FedEx Freight and Methodist Le Bonheur Healthcare. With Smith & Nephew, the University of Memphis and ALSAC, they account for most of the 2,315 petition decisions recorded for 17 Memphis employers across FY2024 to FY2026 in USCIS data.
Read those numbers with two cautions. They count decisions on both initial-employment petitions (new employment, including a move from F-1 OPT into H-1B) and continuing-employment petitions (mostly extensions and other filings for people already in H-1B), so a large total is not a large new-hire pipeline; read each employer's initial column year by year. And FY2026 is partial in this extract, while the live Hub now says it runs through FY2026 quarter 4, so its figures may be higher.
Memphis H-1B sponsors in the USCIS extract behind our hubs (read November 2026)
| Employer, as USCIS records it | What it is | Decisions, FY2024-FY2026 (FY2026 partial) | First H-1B there |
|---|---|---|---|
| Federal Express Corporation | FedEx's main operating company; absorbed FedEx Corporate Services on 2024-06-01 | 755 | Cap-subject |
| St Jude Childrens Research Hospital and St Jude Childrens Research Hospita | Pediatric research hospital, recorded under two spellings | 352 + 254 = 606 (our arithmetic) | Confirm for your role |
| FedEx Dataworks Inc | FedEx's data and analytics subsidiary | 162 | Cap-subject |
| AutoZone Inc | Auto-parts retailer headquartered in Memphis | 161 | Cap-subject |
| FedEx Freight Inc | Less-than-truckload carrier; a separate public company since FedEx spun it off on 2026-06-01 | 106 | Cap-subject |
| Methodist Le Bonheur Healthcare | Memphis hospital system | 100 | Confirm for your role |
| Smith & Nephew, University of Memphis, ALSAC | Medical-device maker; public university; St. Jude's fundraising organization | Smaller counts on the Memphis employer hub | Smith & Nephew cap-subject; confirm the other two |
"Cap-subject" means a first-time H-1B worker needs a lottery selection before the employer can file. Someone already counted against the cap in their current six-year H-1B period generally changes employers without a new lottery.
The concentration is the real story. The three FedEx-named Memphis records and St. Jude's two records account for 1,629 of the 2,315 decisions, about 70% (our arithmetic). Statewide, the Tennessee employer hub lists 70 employers with at least 25 decisions each (8,963 in all), including FedEx Corporate Services (169, all FY2024, filed from suburban Collierville) and East Tennessee's research employers, UT-Battelle ORNL (529, Oak Ridge) and the University of Tennessee (466, Knoxville). A Memphis search covers about a dozen doors, and each opens differently.
Does FedEx sponsor H-1B?
Yes, through several legal entities rather than one brand. Federal Express Corporation, FedEx Dataworks, FedEx Freight and FedEx Corporate Services logged 1,192 decisions between them across FY2024 to FY2026 in this extract (our arithmetic; FY2026 partial). All four are for-profit companies, so a first-time H-1B at any of them is cap-subject.
Two of those names have changed. FedEx's SEC subsidiary list says FedEx Corporate Services and FedEx Ground "were merged into Federal Express Corporation" on June 1, 2024, so the Corporate Services record describes a filer that no longer exists on its own (our reading). And on 2026-06-01 FedEx completed the spin-off of FedEx Freight, "establishing FedEx Freight as an independent, publicly traded company," so a FedEx Freight offer comes from a separate employer.
The legal entity on your offer letter is the one whose record applies to you. Our entity-by-entity FedEx H-1B guide splits FY2024 initial and continuing approvals by company and maps job families to the entity most likely to file.
How does the wage-weighted lottery treat a Memphis offer?
Since 2026-02-27, the weighted selection rule has entered each cap registration according to the highest OEWS wage level the offered wage equals or exceeds for the job's occupation code in the area of intended employment, from one entry at Level I up to four at Level IV. Our explainer on the weighted lottery walks through the math.
The comparison is local. A FedEx Dataworks or AutoZone offer for a Memphis worksite is measured against wages in the Memphis, TN-MS-AR metropolitan area, which also takes in Collierville and suburbs across the Mississippi and Arkansas lines. Nashville is a separate wage area, so the same salary can map to different levels in the two cities. The employer picks the occupation code from the job's real duties, not you; look that code up for the Memphis area on DOL's FLAG wage search to see roughly where an offer lands.
Is St. Jude Children's Research Hospital cap-exempt?
Possibly, for some roles, but treat it as a question, not a fact. As of 2026-11-01 we found no official St. Jude or USCIS page stating St. Jude's cap-exempt basis, and the Data Hub does not show which filings were cap-exempt. Each petition has to establish the exemption.
USCIS's H-1B specialty occupations page says workers employed at an institution of higher education, its affiliated or related nonprofit entities, a nonprofit research organization or a government research organization are not subject to the cap. The definitions in 8 CFR 214.2(h)(8)(iii)(F), in effect since 2025-01-17 (eCFR), give a nonprofit hospital three possible routes:
- Nonprofit research organization. "When a fundamental activity of a nonprofit organization is engaging in basic research and/or applied research, that organization is a nonprofit research organization."
- Related to or affiliated with a university. Shared ownership or control, being operated by or attached to a university, or a formal written affiliation agreement for research or education under which a fundamental activity of the nonprofit directly contributes to the university's mission.
- Working "at" a qualifying entity. A worker employed by another company can qualify by spending at least half their work time on duties at the qualifying institution that directly further its education or research mission. Telework can count.
The same test applies to Methodist Le Bonheur: being a hospital, or even a nonprofit, does not by itself make an employer cap-exempt. The University of Memphis is an institution of higher education, the clearest category, but still confirm how the specific position is filed. Our guide to cap-exempt hospitals and university medical centers covers how health systems usually structure this.
Common misconception: "St. Jude is a research hospital, so every job with the St. Jude name skips the lottery." Correction: the employer must document its qualifying basis in each petition. ALSAC, St. Jude's fundraising organization, is a separate employer with its own record, and a contractor's employee qualifies only under the half-time-at-the-entity rule.
Why the cap-exempt answer changes your timeline
- No lottery. A cap-exempt employer can file at any time of year, for any start date.
- No cap-gap. Cap-gap covers only timely cap-subject change-of-status petitions, per the USCIS cap-gap page. To work without a break, the H-1B must be approved and start before your OPT or STEM OPT EAD expires. USCIS's processing-times tool showed 10 months for an H-1B change of status (80% of cases, read 2026-11-01); premium processing is 15 business days for a $2,965 Form I-907 fee. Our post on whether cap-gap applies to cap-exempt H-1Bs covers the timing.
- Leaving later. If you were never counted against the cap in your six-year period, a move from cap-exempt work to FedEx or AutoZone means the lottery. A cap-subject concurrent job held alongside continuing cap-exempt work is not counted, but USCIS "may revoke" it if the cap-exempt job ends.
- The draft rule. RIN 1615-AD00 is still unpublished at OIRA. No text is public, and today's cap-exemption rules apply.
- Hiring from abroad. Cap-exempt status does not take a petition outside the $100,000 proclamation. For a researcher recruited abroad on a consular petition, the payment is blocked, not repealed: the USCIS Form I-129 page (updated 2026-10-30) says that if the court order "is later lifted, DHS still plans to collect the payment." CRS Insight IN12747 (2026-10-14) reported that initial consular H-1B petitions from cap-exempt employers fell 91% in the fee's first eight months, year over year. A change of status USCIS grants inside the US was never covered.
Is Memphis good for supply chain jobs on OPT?
Yes, for the right kind of role. FedEx runs its global air hub at Memphis International Airport, and the city's sponsor list leans toward logistics, freight and retail. The visa test is narrower than the job market: OPT work must relate directly to your degree, and a later H-1B needs a specialty occupation, a job that requires a bachelor's or higher in a specific field.
- Analyst, data and engineering titles (supply-chain analytics, operations research, data engineering, software) line up with both tests. Hourly hub, warehouse and sort work generally does not.
- STEM OPT needs an employer enrolled in E-Verify and a Form I-983 training plan. E-Verify runs under the current continuing resolution through 2026-12-11, unless Congress passes funding by then (in the 2025 shutdown it was offline from 2025-10-01 to about October 8-9), so for a mid-December start, ask HR how it handles E-Verify in a lapse.
- Unemployment limits are 90 days on post-completion OPT and 150 days in aggregate on STEM OPT, counting each day without employer information, per Study in the States.
- The STEM OPT 180-day automatic extension still applies to timely filers, per the USCIS STEM OPT page; the 2026-10-14 EAD rule did not change it.
Our guide to supply chain analyst sponsorship at big retail companies covers how large retailers title and classify these jobs; the same questions apply to AutoZone and FedEx postings.
Memphis H-1B jobs vs Nashville: which suits you?
Memphis suits candidates whose degree points at logistics, supply-chain analytics, data or biomedical research. Nashville suits a wider spread of engineering, finance, healthcare-management and technology profiles. The cities share a state, but not a sponsor base or a wage area.
Memphis vs Nashville for international graduates (as of November 2026)
| Question | Memphis | Nashville |
|---|---|---|
| Largest filers in the same extract | FedEx entities, St. Jude, AutoZone, Methodist Le Bonheur | Cummins, UBS, HCA Management Services, Asurion, Vanderbilt University |
| How concentrated | About 70% of decisions at the FedEx-named records and St. Jude (our arithmetic) | Spread across manufacturing, finance, healthcare management and tech; see the Nashville employer hub |
| Possible cap-exempt doors | St. Jude, Methodist Le Bonheur (confirm per role), University of Memphis | Vanderbilt University and other universities and academic medical centers (confirm per role) |
| Degrees that fit best | Supply chain, operations research, data science, biomedical sciences | Engineering, finance, health informatics, computer science, business analytics |
| Wage area for the lottery | Memphis, TN-MS-AR metro | Nashville metro; look up both on FLAG |
| Where to start | Memphis employer hub | Our Nashville H-1B jobs guide |
Pick the degree-to-employer match first and the city second. A biomedical PhD has more realistic doors in Memphis than a health-IT generalist does, and the reverse holds in Nashville.
A worked timeline: one graduate, two Memphis offers
A hypothetical: you finish a STEM-designated master's in December 2026 and start post-completion OPT in early 2027. You hold two offers: a data role at FedEx Dataworks, and a research-data role at St. Jude that HR has told you, in writing, would be filed cap-exempt.
Cap-subject vs cap-exempt timeline (as of November 2026)
| When | Offer A: cap-subject (FedEx Dataworks) | Offer B: confirmed cap-exempt (St. Jude) |
|---|---|---|
| Now (2026-11) | Weighted selection in effect; FY2028 registration not announced | No lottery; the employer files when ready |
| Expected March 2027 (not announced) | Employer registers you at the level your offered wage reaches | Not applicable |
| After selection | Employer files Form I-129 within a filing period of at least 90 days | Employer files Form I-129 well before your OPT EAD expires |
| Petition pending | Cap-gap can extend F-1 status and OPT work to 2028-04-01, or to the start date if earlier | No cap-gap; work stops if the EAD expires before the H-1B starts |
| 2027-10-01 | Earliest FY2028 start date | Start follows approval, not tied to October 1 |
| Not selected | STEM OPT, if eligible, gives you more lottery seasons | Not applicable |
| Leaving later | Already counted; changing employers generally needs no new lottery | Not counted; a cap-subject employer means the lottery |
Neither path is better in the abstract. Your DSO can review how your OPT and STEM OPT dates line up; the cap-exempt basis, start date and premium-processing choice belong to the employer's immigration attorney.
How to check a Memphis H-1B job before you apply
- Search the USCIS H-1B Employer Data Hub for every legal name: each FedEx entity, both St. Jude spellings, and ALSAC. Read initial and continuing approvals year by year.
- Download the LCA disclosure files from DOL's foreign labor performance data page (latest: FY2026 Q3, through 2026-06-30), filter by employer and worksite city, and read job titles, occupation codes and wages for roles like yours.
- Look up your occupation's Memphis-area prevailing wage on DOL's FLAG wage search to see roughly which level an offer reaches.
- Ask the recruiter by email whether the company files H-1B petitions for this position, and whether it would be filed cap-subject or cap-exempt, on which basis.
- Bring the offer to your DSO to confirm it relates directly to your degree, complete Form I-983 if you are on STEM OPT, and report the employer through the SEVP Portal or your DSO, as your school instructs.
- Route petition questions (cap-exempt basis, start date, premium processing) to the employer's immigration attorney or your own licensed immigration attorney, not your DSO.
Common mistakes
- Assuming St. Jude, or any hospital, is cap-exempt. Get the basis for your role in writing.
- Searching "FedEx" once. Federal Express Corporation, FedEx Dataworks, FedEx Freight (now separate) and the merged FedEx Corporate Services each have their own record.
- Reading 755 as new hires. The totals include continuing petitions, and FY2026 is partial.
- Missing half of St. Jude's record. It appears under two spellings (352 and 254), and ALSAC is a separate employer.
- Counting on cap-gap for a cap-exempt start. It does not apply; plan the start date against your EAD end date.
- Taking hub operations work on OPT. A job unrelated to your degree may not count as OPT employment and will not support a later H-1B.
- Treating the $100,000 payment as live, or as gone for good. It is blocked and not collected as of 2026-11-01; the appeals are pending.

The counts include extensions and other continuing petitions, not only new hires.
Does FedEx sponsor H-1B?
Yes, through several legal entities rather than one. In the same extract, Federal Express Corporation (755) and FedEx Dataworks (162) file from Memphis, for FY2024 to FY2026 combined (FY2026 partial). FedEx Corporate Services (169, all FY2024) merged into Federal Express Corporation on 2024-06-01, and FedEx Freight (106) became a separate public company on 2026-06-01. All are for-profit, so a first-time H-1B there is cap-subject and goes through the wage-weighted lottery, in effect since 2026-02-27.
Is St. Jude Children's Research Hospital cap-exempt?
Do not assume it. Under 8 CFR 214.2(h)(8)(iii)(F), in effect since 2025-01-17, a nonprofit can be cap-exempt as a nonprofit research organization or through a qualifying relationship with a university, and each petition must establish the basis. As of 2026-11-01 we found no official St. Jude or USCIS page stating St. Jude's basis, so ask the hiring team in writing whether your role would be filed cap-exempt, and on which basis.
Is Memphis good for supply chain jobs on OPT?
Memphis is a strong logistics market because FedEx runs its global air hub there, but OPT work must relate directly to your degree, and STEM OPT requires an employer enrolled in E-Verify and a Form I-983 training plan. For a later H-1B the job must be a specialty occupation, so analyst, data and engineering titles fit far better than hourly hub work. Confirm OPT fit with your DSO.
Memphis or Nashville for international graduates?
Memphis suits logistics, supply-chain analytics, data and biomedical research candidates, because about 70% of its H-1B decisions in the FY2024-FY2026 extract sit with the FedEx-named Memphis records and St. Jude. Nashville's largest filers in the same extract, including Cummins, UBS, HCA Management Services, Asurion and Vanderbilt University, span more sectors. The cities are separate wage areas, so compare your occupation's prevailing wage in each on DOL's FLAG wage search before you rank offers.
