Jobs After a STEM-Designated MS in Finance: Using 36 Months of OPT and Who Sponsors After
Your MSF's CIP code, not its brochure, decides whether you get 36 months of OPT, and the role you pick shapes the H-1B case that may follow.

A STEM-designated MS in Finance can give you up to 36 months of work authorization: 12 months of post-completion OPT plus the 24-month STEM OPT extension. But "STEM-designated" is decided by the CIP code on your Form I-20, not by the program brochure. Finance, General (52.0801) is not on the DHS STEM list; Financial Mathematics (27.0305) and Financial Analytics (30.7104) are. Every MS finance STEM OPT job then has to pass three more gates: an employer enrolled in E-Verify, a signed Form I-983 training plan, and duties that directly relate to the degree. In our reading, quant, risk, valuation and modeling-heavy FP&A or treasury roles fit most easily.
Status as of November 1, 2026. In effect: the 24-month STEM OPT extension, the 180-day automatic extension for timely STEM OPT filings (unchanged by the October 14 EAD rule), and the 90-day / 150-day unemployment limits. Proposed only: the OPT fee rule, with comments closing 2026-11-09; after that date the comment period is closed and the rule is still a proposal unless a final rule is published. Blocked: the Duration of Status rule (by a federal court since 2026-09-14; summary judgment briefed; DHS's appeal pending), so the F-1 60-day grace period still applies; and collection of the $100,000 H-1B payment (Proclamation 11069 stands on paper, but courts blocked the agency policies; appeals pending). Not announced: FY2028 H-1B registration.
MS Finance STEM OPT jobs: the short answer
A STEM MS in Finance qualifies for the 24-month STEM OPT extension only when its CIP code is on the DHS STEM Designated Degree Program List. Each job must be paid, at least 20 hours a week, with an E-Verify employer, and described in a Form I-983 tied directly to the degree. Quantitative finance roles clear that bar most easily.
Is an MS in Finance STEM OPT eligible?
Only if the six-digit CIP code your school assigned to the program is on the list. Your I-20 shows that code next to your major, and it is the code in SEVIS that your DSO and USCIS work from. A "STEM-designated" badge on a program website is a description; the code is the decision.
The DHS STEM Designated Degree Program List (last updated July 22, 2024, and still the "current STEM list" ICE links on 2026-11-01) restates the rule at 8 CFR 214.2(f)(10)(ii)(C)(2): a STEM field is one "included in the Department of Education's Classification of Instructional Programs taxonomy within the two-digit series containing engineering, biological sciences, mathematics, and physical sciences, or a related field." Mathematics (series 27) qualifies automatically; business codes (series 52) qualify only where a specific six-digit code is listed.
Finance-adjacent CIP codes on and off the DHS STEM list (as of 2026-11; list dated July 22, 2024)
| CIP code | CIP title | On the STEM list? | Typical training it supports |
|---|---|---|---|
| 52.0801 | Finance, General | No | None: this degree cannot support a STEM OPT extension |
| 27.0305 | Financial Mathematics | Yes (series 27, automatic) | Pricing, stochastic and numerical modeling |
| 30.7104 | Financial Analytics | Yes | Data analysis applied to financial decisions |
| 52.1399 | Management Sciences and Quantitative Methods, Other | Yes | Quantitative methods applied to business problems |
| 52.1304 | Actuarial Science | Yes | Risk and insurance modeling |
| 52.1302 | Business Statistics | Yes | Statistical analysis and forecasting |
| 45.0603 | Econometrics and Quantitative Economics | Yes | Econometric forecasting and research |
If the code on your I-20 is 52.0801, or you think the school coded a quantitative program wrongly, talk to your DSO first; the options and their timing are in our guide to what to do when your CIP code is not on the STEM list. A second route exists: USCIS says a student on OPT from a non-STEM degree "may be eligible to use a previous STEM degree from a U.S. institution of higher education," such as a US engineering bachelor's from an accredited, SEVP-certified school, earned within 10 years of the STEM OPT application and not already used for a STEM OPT extension, if the job relates directly to that degree (USCIS STEM OPT page, updated 2026-01-30; Study in the States).
What jobs can you get with a STEM MS in Finance?
Any job that passes three tests: the employer is enrolled in E-Verify, you are a bona fide employee working at least 20 hours a week, and the Form I-983 explains, in the words of the Form I-983 overview, "How the practical training directly relates to the student's qualifying STEM degree." The same plan attests that duties, hours and compensation are "commensurate with those provided to the employer's similarly situated U.S. workers," and the form asks for an annual salary, which in practice rules out unpaid arrangements.
That makes the role, not the employer's industry, the deciding variable. A bank can offer you a STEM OPT job in model validation and a non-qualifying one in branch sales in the same week.
Finance roles on STEM OPT, mapped to a quantitative MSF (our reading, as of 2026-11)
| Role | Typical employers | Link to a STEM MSF | Real duties that carry the link |
|---|---|---|---|
| Quant analyst or quant researcher | Trading firms, asset managers, bank strats teams | Strong | Pricing models, statistical research, coding in Python or C++ |
| Market or credit risk analyst | Banks, insurers, asset managers | Strong | VaR, stress testing, default and loss models |
| Valuation or financial modeling | Valuation and transaction advisory firms | Moderate to strong | DCF and option-based valuation, Monte Carlo methods |
| FP&A analyst | Corporates in any sector | Moderate | Statistical forecasting, scenario and driver models, not just reporting |
| Treasury analyst | Corporates, banks | Moderate | Liquidity forecasting, hedging and FX analytics, not payment processing |
| Investment banking analyst | Banks, boutique advisers | Moderate | Modeling and valuation work; check E-Verify at small firms |
| Wealth management, sales, client service, fund operations | Banks, brokers, fund administrators | Weak | Hard to tie relationship or processing duties to a quantitative degree |
Moderate rows turn on the actual duties, not the title. An FP&A seat built around a driver-based forecasting model sits close to a quantitative degree; the same title spent on month-end variance commentary does not, and no wording in the plan changes that. Ask the hiring manager what the first year of work looks like before you accept, because the plan is written from the job, not the other way round, and both you and the employer must report "material changes to, or material deviations from" it (see whether your I-983 training plan matches your real job). Our corporate finance and FP&A sponsorship guide covers that track, and the quant finance sponsorship guide covers trading and research roles.
Do small trading firms and fintechs use E-Verify?
Some do and some have never enrolled, and size or prestige tells you nothing either way. USCIS lists enrollment in E-Verify, in good standing, as an employer requirement for STEM OPT, and the E-Verify FAQ on STEM OPT hiring says employment agencies and consulting firms that employ STEM OPT students must enroll too, while the client companies they place students with "need not be enrolled." A five-person prop shop or a seed-stage fintech can be a perfect fit on paper and still be unable to employ you on STEM OPT.
Check before you accept:
- Ask the recruiter or HR for the hiring entity's legal name, its EIN and its E-Verify company ID number. The I-983 asks for the EIN; the STEM OPT I-765 filing needs the employer's name as listed in E-Verify and its E-Verify company ID, according to the USCIS STEM OPT page.
- Search the legal name, then any trade name, in the E-Verify Employer Search on e-verify.gov, which USCIS updates daily at about 2 a.m. ET.
- Confirm the account shows as enrolled, not terminated, and that a hiring site in your state appears; the tool warns that listing several hiring sites does not mean every site is enrolled.
- Match the entity on your offer letter, your I-983 and the E-Verify record; if a subsidiary or a staffing firm is the actual employer, that entity is the one that must be enrolled.
- Send the completed I-983 to your DSO, who reviews it and enters the STEM OPT recommendation in SEVIS before the I-765 is filed with USCIS.
Our E-Verify employer lookup guide covers edge cases such as a legal name that differs from the brand. One timing note: E-Verify is carried by the continuing resolution through 2026-12-11, and during the 2025 shutdown it went offline from 2025-10-01 until about October 8 or 9. If your start date falls after 2026-12-11 and Congress has not passed funding by then, ask HR how it would handle E-Verify.
Where is finance hiring for STEM OPT candidates concentrated?
The junior bank seat is scarcer, so widen the map. Revelio Labs reported in October 2026 that junior headcount at US banks is 4.7% below its October 2022 level, which its authors read as restructuring rather than automation. On the supply side, GMAC's 2026 Application Trends Survey (released 2026-10-27) found international applications to US business-school programs down 38%. That is a measure of applications, not of who gets hired; it says nothing about how any program is coded, so check your own CIP code rather than the marketing.
The roles with the strongest degree link sit in four places: bank risk, quant and model-validation teams; investment and risk teams at asset managers and insurers; FP&A and treasury groups at large corporates; and fintech or payments companies enrolled in E-Verify. Apply to front-office analyst classes too, but do not build the whole search around the shrinking part of the market.
How do you use all 36 months? A worked timeline
Here is an illustrative timeline for an MSF student whose program end date is Friday, May 14, 2027, with OPT assumed to start June 21, 2027. Your own dates come from your I-20 and EAD.
Illustrative 36-month timeline for a May 2027 MSF graduate (rules as of 2026-11; H-1B dates are expectations, not announcements)
| Date | What happens | Rule that applies |
|---|---|---|
| March 2027 (expected) | FY2028 H-1B registration | Only if an employer registers you; not announced as of 2026-11-01 |
| 2027-05-14 (Fri) | Program end date | F-1 60-day grace period; post-completion OPT I-765 due by 2027-07-13 and within 30 days of the DSO recommendation |
| 2027-06-21 | OPT starts (assumed) | Up to 90 days of unemployment allowed |
| March 2028 (expected) | FY2029 registration | Weighted selection by wage level, if the current rule is unchanged |
| 2028-03-22 (Wed) | Earliest STEM OPT I-765 filing | Up to 90 days before the OPT EAD expires, within 60 days of the DSO recommendation |
| 2028-06-20 (Tue) | OPT EAD expires; last day to file STEM OPT | A timely filing gets the 180-day automatic extension |
| 2028-06-21 | STEM OPT period begins (approved, or still pending under the 180-day extension) | E-Verify employer, signed I-983; 150 days of unemployment in total across OPT and STEM OPT |
| June 2029 | 12-month I-983 self-evaluation | Covers the first 12 months of STEM OPT; submit to your DSO no later than 10 days after that period ends |
| March 2029 and March 2030 (expected) | FY2030 and FY2031 registrations | A timely, cap-subject change-of-status petition brings cap-gap; a cap-exempt one does not |
| 2030-06-20 (Thu) | STEM OPT ends | Final I-983 evaluation due within 10 days; cap-gap, if it applies, extends status and work to April 1 of the fiscal year requested, or the petition start date if earlier |
Three things in that table matter more than the rest:
- Up to four registration seasons can fall inside or just before the window, which is the real value of the STEM designation for a finance graduate. USCIS must announce each season at least 30 calendar days ahead; its H-1B registration page still showed FY2027 on 2026-11-01.
- Unemployment is cumulative. The SEVIS Help Hub counts 90 days on post-completion OPT and 150 days in aggregate on STEM OPT, not 150 fresh days.
- The filing deadline is a date you cannot stretch. A STEM OPT I-765 filed after the OPT EAD expires gets no 180-day extension. Under USCIS fee schedule G-1055 (edition 10/26/26), the I-765 costs $520 on paper or $470 online, and OPT/STEM OPT premium processing is $1,780 for 30 business days. The processing-times tool showed 80% of F-1 student I-765 cases done within 5 months on 2026-11-01; check it live.
Where the proposed OPT fee would land. The OPT fees NPRM (published 2026-10-08, still proposed) would make the school, as the legal payer, pay $70,000 before the initial OPT recommendation and $30,000 before each later one, with STEM OPT counting as later. Schools could pass the cost to students or employers. It would start 60 days after a final rule, and students already on approved OPT, or with a DSO recommendation dated before the effective date, are not covered. The text does not settle whether $70,000 or $30,000 would apply at the STEM stage for a student whose first OPT recommendation came before any fee, so treat that as unresolved. Who sponsors H-1B after STEM OPT?
Employers that file for your specific role. Finance is not a sponsoring or non-sponsoring industry; each employer decides by role, business line and legal entity, so the useful question is whether this entity has filed for this job family before.
Do banks sponsor H-1B for MS Finance graduates?
Some do, and you can check rather than guess:
- Search the USCIS H-1B Employer Data Hub, which now says it covers FY2009 through FY2026 Q4, for every legal entity the bank hires through, and read initial-employment approvals separately from continuing ones (initial approvals are the closer signal for a new hire).
- Download the latest LCA disclosure file from DOL's OFLC performance data page (FY2026 Q3, determinations through 2026-06-30).
- Filter it by employer name, then read the job titles and occupation titles the employer actually filed for. That tells you whether a bank files for risk and quant analysts or only for technologists.
- Note the wage level on those filings, because wage level now affects the registration odds (see below).
An LCA is a DOL filing, not an H-1B approval, so treat it as evidence that the employer has filed for that job family before, not as a promise for your role.
Two cost questions come up in finance offer conversations. Proclamation 11069, which imposes the $100,000 H-1B payment, is in effect on paper through 2027-09-21, but collection is blocked: courts vacated or enjoined the agency policies that implement it, and those orders are on appeal. USCIS's I-129 page (updated 2026-10-30) says, "If this order is later lifted, DHS still plans to collect the payment." Even if collection resumed, a change of status USCIS grants inside the US, the usual STEM OPT-to-H-1B path, was never covered. Separately, a $103,265 fee for certain cap-subject petitions (RIN 1615-AD20) is still proposed; comments closed 2026-09-24 and no final rule was at OIRA on 2026-11-01. Wage level now matters too: weighted selection, in effect since 2026-02-27, enters a Level IV registration four times and a Level I registration once.
Is a financial analyst role a specialty occupation?
It can be, but USCIS judges the position, not the title. The USCIS H-1B specialty occupations page (updated 2026-09-21) requires "Attainment of a bachelor's or higher degree in a directly related specific specialty (or its equivalent)," and explains that directly related means "there is a logical connection between the required degree, or its equivalent, and the duties of the position." In our reading, a posting that accepts any business degree is a weaker fit than one requiring finance, economics, mathematics or a quantitative field for modeling-heavy duties, which is one more reason the role you choose on STEM OPT matters later. How the petition is framed is the employer's immigration attorney's call. For the longer career track, see our financial analyst path from OPT to H-1B. Also pending: USCIS's "Reforming the H-1B Nonimmigrant Visa Classification Program" proposal (RIN 1615-AD00) has been under OIRA review since 2026-08-24, with no public text.
Common mistakes
- Trusting the label instead of the code. Read the CIP code on your I-20 against the DHS list before you plan on 36 months.
- Accepting a non-E-Verify offer and hoping. An employer can enroll, but it has to be enrolled, in good standing, before your STEM OPT I-765 can list its E-Verify company ID; a training plan with an unenrolled employer does not qualify.
- Pasting the job posting into the I-983. The plan must explain how the training relates to your degree and must match the job you do; drift into sales or operations is a material change.
- Treating 150 days as a fresh allowance. STEM OPT unemployment is 150 days in total, including days used on post-completion OPT.
- Filing STEM OPT at the last minute. File before the OPT EAD expires or lose the 180-day extension; USCIS can now deny an OPT I-765 without an RFE when initial evidence is missing (PA-2026-05, in effect since 2026-08-05 and challenged in court).
- Reading the OPT fee proposal as law. It is a proposal until a final rule is published; your DSO will tell you if anything changes for your recommendation.
- Assuming one sponsored role means yours. A bank that files for software engineers may never have filed for an FP&A analyst. Check the LCA data by title.
Frequently asked questions
Is an MS in Finance STEM OPT eligible?
Only if the CIP code on your I-20 is on the DHS STEM Designated Degree Program List (the version dated July 22, 2024 was the current list on 2026-11-01). Finance, General (52.0801) is not on the list, while codes such as Financial Mathematics (27.0305), Financial Analytics (30.7104) and Management Sciences and Quantitative Methods, Other (52.1399) are. Your DSO can confirm the code in your SEVIS record.
What jobs can I get with a STEM MS in Finance on STEM OPT?
Any paid role of at least 20 hours a week with an employer enrolled in E-Verify, where a signed Form I-983 shows the training directly relates to your qualifying degree. In our reading, quant, market and credit risk, valuation, and modeling-heavy FP&A or treasury roles make that link most easily. Sales, client service and operations roles usually do not.
Do banks sponsor H-1B for MS Finance graduates?
Some do, but sponsorship is decided role by role and by legal entity, so look up the exact entity in the USCIS H-1B Employer Data Hub (FY2009 through FY2026 Q4) and in DOL's LCA disclosure files. As of 2026-11-01 the FY2028 registration is not announced, and the $100,000 payment is not being collected because courts blocked the policies that implement it (appeals pending). It never applied to a change of status USCIS grants inside the US.
Do small trading firms use E-Verify?
Some do and some have never enrolled, so check before you accept. Search the firm's legal name in the E-Verify Employer Search on e-verify.gov and ask HR for the employer's name as listed in E-Verify and its E-Verify company ID, which your STEM OPT I-765 filing needs. Without an enrolled employer there is no STEM OPT job, whatever the role.
Is a financial analyst role a specialty occupation?
It can be, but USCIS judges the actual position, not the title. On its H-1B page (updated 2026-09-21), USCIS requires a bachelor's or higher degree in a directly related specific specialty. In our reading, a posting that accepts any business degree is weaker than one requiring finance, economics or a quantitative field. The employer's immigration attorney decides how the petition is framed.
