New Grad Software Engineer Interview Timeline on OPT: OA to Offer, Mapped Against Graduation and H-1B Season
The OA, onsite and team match run on the employer's clock while your OPT card and H-1B registration run on the government's, so here is how to line them up month by month.

Part of our guide to the H-1B lottery.
The new grad software engineer interview process at large tech employers typically runs in five stages: an online assessment (OA), a recruiter or technical phone screen, a final round (often virtual), team match (at employers that hire into a pool first), and a written offer. On an F-1 visa, that pipeline runs on the employer's clock while three government clocks run alongside it: your OPT filing window (up to 90 days before and 60 days after you complete your degree), USCIS processing of your Form I-765, and the H-1B registration season.
This post lines the two calendars up for a December 2026 or May 2027 graduate. Your own I-20 and your DSO's instructions govern the real dates.
Status as of 2026-11-01: FY2028 H-1B registration has not been announced; wage-weighted H-1B selection is in effect; the OPT fees are only proposed (comments close 2026-11-09); and the Duration of Status rule has been blocked by a federal court since 2026-09-14, so the F-1 60-day grace period still applies.
How long does the new grad software engineer interview process take on OPT?
There is no official average; every employer sets its own pace. Plan for each of the five stages, from online assessment to written offer, to take anywhere from a few days to a few weeks, with team matching often the longest wait. On F-1 OPT, the start date that follows must also wait for USCIS to approve your EAD.
End to end, the common pattern in the calendar below runs from fall applications to winter offers, so plan in months, not weeks. Each stage also carries a visa question:
| Stage | What happens | The visa moment | What to say or ask |
|---|---|---|---|
| Application | Resume plus a screening form | "Will you now or in the future require sponsorship?" | Answer truthfully: OPT now, H-1B later |
| Online assessment | Timed coding problems on a vendor platform | Usually none | Ask for a later window if it collides with finals |
| Phone screen | Background, one or two coding problems | Your program end date and earliest start | Give the date on your I-20, not a guess |
| Final round | Back-to-back coding, behavioral, sometimes design | Usually none | Ask when team match and offers happen |
| Team match | Managers choose from candidates who passed | None, but it sets your start date | Ask what happens if it runs past graduation |
| Written offer | Salary, start date, response deadline | EAD timing, H-1B registration, STEM OPT | Get the answers in writing |

Why the calendar is tighter for the Class of 2027
Fewer entry-level seats leave less room to recover from a missed date. Indeed Hiring Lab's October 2026 labor market snapshot (2026-10-22) put its Software Development postings index at about 78 to 79 (February 1, 2020 = 100), the lowest of the five sectors it charted, and its seniority analysis found entry-level roles were 4.5% of software development postings in Q1 2026. NACE had published no Class of 2027 hiring projection as of 2026-11-01 (last year's came on 2025-11-12), so treat any confident seat-count forecast as a guess.
When do new grad interviews happen? A month-by-month calendar
Large tech employers often open new grad roles in the late summer and fall before graduation, while others hire closer to the start date, so read the pipeline column as a common pattern. The visa column is the part that does not move.
Calendar for a program end date of May 14, 2027, as of 2026-11:
| Month | Hiring pipeline (common pattern) | Visa clock (status as of 2026-11-01) | Your move |
|---|---|---|---|
| Aug to Oct 2026 | Postings open; applications and OA invitations | Nothing to file; your I-20 program end date drives every later date | Apply early; confirm your end date with your DSO |
| Oct to Dec 2026 | Phone screens and final rounds | OPT-fee comments close 2026-11-09 (proposal only) | Raise start-date flexibility before you need it |
| Dec 2026 to Feb 2027 | Team match, written offers, response deadlines | FY2028 registration not announced; USCIS must give at least 30 days' notice | Ask about H-1B registration, wage level and E-Verify before you sign |
| Feb 2027 | Acceptance, background check | OPT window opens 90 days before completion (2027-02-13) | Get the DSO recommendation; file Form I-765 within 30 days of it |
| Mar 2027 | Onboarding paperwork | FY2028 registration expected, not scheduled (FY2027 ran March 4 to 19, 2026) | Ask whether you will be registered this season or next; get it in writing |
| Apr to May 2027 | Start date confirmed | If selected, the employer files the petition; program end date 2027-05-14 | Ask your DSO before any trip abroad while the I-765 is pending |
| Jun to Jul 2027 | First day of work | No work before the EAD arrives; last day to file OPT is 2027-07-13 | Report your employer as your school directs |
| Oct 1, 2027 | Working on OPT | FY2028 H-1B start date for an approved change of status | If not selected, plan STEM OPT and the next season |
Reading this in November 2026 with a May 2027 end date? The hiring column has already started, but the visa column has not: nothing can be filed before 2027-02-13. Apply now to postings that are still open and keep going through spring, since employers that hire closer to the start date post later.
December 2026 graduates: your OPT window is likely open now, so your interviews overlap your filing. USCIS moved its filing addresses on 2026-10-07 and accepts the old ones only if postmarked on or before 2026-11-09, and it takes only the 08/21/25 edition of Form I-765. Already graduated and on OPT? Our month-by-month job search plan for the FY2028 lottery is built for that case.
A worked example: one offer, three clocks
Say your I-20 shows a program end date of Friday, May 14, 2027, and you sign an offer in January with a June 1 start.
- The window. The USCIS OPT page says you "May apply up to 90 days before you complete your degree, but no later than 60 days after you complete your degree," and within 30 days after your DSO enters the recommendation in SEVIS. By our count, that is Saturday, February 13 to Tuesday, July 13, 2027.
- The DSO clock. A recommendation entered Monday, February 1 must be followed by a filing by Wednesday, March 3. One entered in early January would lapse before the window opened, so time the request with your DSO.
- Processing. You file online on Tuesday, February 16. On 2026-11-01 the USCIS processing-times tool showed 80% of I-765 (c)(3) F-1 student cases completed within 5 months. That describes recently completed cases, not a promise for yours, but five months from February 16 is July 16 (our arithmetic), about six weeks after a June 1 start. Raise that gap in January.
- The lottery. If your employer registers you in a March 2027 season and you are selected, an approved change of status would start Friday, October 1, 2027. Whether you can be registered before you graduate, and how a pending OPT application interacts with a selected petition, is a question for the employer's immigration attorney and your DSO.
Will a new grad offer wait for my OPT EAD?
You can sign before the EAD exists; you cannot start before it arrives. USCIS says: "You may not begin your pre- or post-completion OPT until after we approve your Form I-765 and you receive your Employment Authorization Document (EAD)." So the question is whether your employer will move the date if the card is late. Three things shape the risk:
- When you file. Filing early in the window leaves the most margin.
- Whether you pay for speed. Premium processing for OPT and STEM OPT I-765s costs $1,780 on top of the $470 online or $520 paper filing fee, per the USCIS fee schedule G-1055 (edition 10/26/26), and USCIS's premium processing page gives 30 business days for the I-765. It buys a faster decision, not an approval.
- Whether your packet is complete. USCIS policy PA-2026-05 (in effect since 2026-08-05, challenged in AAUP v. Mullin) lets officers deny any benefit request, OPT included, without first sending a Request for Evidence when required initial evidence is missing. Have your DSO review the packet.
Cornell, Johns Hopkins and USC advise against international travel while an initial OPT application is pending. Cornell's guidance adds that if the application is denied while you are abroad, "you cannot reenter the United States in F-1 status to reapply for OPT", and that a missed biometrics appointment while abroad can delay or deny the case. Ask your DSO before you book a winter trip.
The three conversations to have, and when
On the application: the sponsorship question
Answer truthfully. OPT needs no sponsorship, but an H-1B does, so for most F-1 candidates the honest answer to "now or in the future" is yes. Postings rarely signal where an employer stands: a single-vendor review by Match.dev of 2,718 engineering roles at 136 companies (postings read 2026-10-13) reported that 88.1% of postings said nothing about sponsorship, while 90.7% of application forms asked about work authorization or sponsorship. Our explainer on what happens after you answer the sponsorship question in Workday covers what the form does with your answer.
At the offer: start date versus EAD
Ask by email whether the company will move the date if your EAD arrives late. Give your actual or planned filing date and point to the USCIS tool rather than promising a day.
Before you sign: what happens if the lottery fails
That is the employer's policy, not a rule, so ask:
- Will you register me in the next H-1B season, and in later ones while I have OPT or STEM OPT time?
- At what wage level will you file the role?
- Are you enrolled in E-Verify, so I can use the STEM OPT extension?
- If I am not selected, do I keep the job, and does the offer letter say so?
Our guide to what happens to an offer when you are not selected covers contingency clauses, cap-exempt roles and alternative visas.
H-1B season for new grads: FY2028 registration and how many tries you get
Has FY2028 H-1B registration been announced?
No. As of 2026-11-01 the USCIS registration page (updated 2026-09-21) still shows the FY2027 season, March 4 to 19, 2026, at $215 per registration. USCIS must announce the period at least 30 calendar days ahead under 8 CFR 214.2(h)(8)(iii)(A)(3), so March 2027 is an expectation, not a date. Your employer, not you, files the registration.
Wage-weighted selection has been in effect since 2026-02-27 under the final rule: a Level IV registration is entered four times and a Level I registration once. Our guide to the FY2028 lottery's expected dates and weighted selection covers the levels. FY2027 had no second selection round after the cap was reached on 2026-07-17.
Common misconception, then correction. Blogs and forums quote an "official FY2027 selection rate." USCIS's registration chart stops at FY2026 (343,981 eligible registrations, 120,141 selected), which predates weighted selection. Any FY2027 rate you see online is not a USCIS figure.
How many lottery chances do STEM OPT students get?
The rules set no number. OPT lasts up to 12 months and the STEM extension up to 24 more, so you can hold up to 36 months of work authorization. How many March seasons fall inside depends on when your OPT actually starts.
Illustrative, by our arithmetic, as of 2026-11. Assumes March registration every year (an expectation only), a STEM-eligible degree, an E-Verify employer, continuous eligibility and unemployment within the limits.
| Graduation | Assumed OPT start | STEM OPT would end | Seasons inside the window |
|---|---|---|---|
| December 2026 | February 2027 | February 2030 | March 2027, 2028, 2029 |
| May 2027 | June 2027 | June 2030 | March 2028, 2029, 2030, plus March 2027 if registered before graduation |
Our guide to planning around three lottery attempts on STEM OPT goes season by season. Two rules keep those seasons alive:
- STEM OPT timing. Per the USCIS STEM OPT page, you file up to 90 days before your OPT EAD expires and within 60 days of the DSO recommendation, with an E-Verify employer that signs the Form I-983 training plan. Timely filers get a 180-day automatic extension while the case is pending, unchanged by the 2026-10-14 EAD rule; a STEM I-765 filed after the OPT EAD expires gets none.
- Cap-gap. If your OPT would end before an October 1 start, cap-gap extends F-1 status and work authorization "until April 1 of the fiscal year for which such H-1B status is being requested" (or the petition start date, if earlier) for a timely cap-subject petition. Cap-exempt petitions get none. It ends automatically if the petition is denied, withdrawn, revoked, rejected or not selected, and also if the change-of-status request itself is denied or withdrawn, even when the petition is approved for consular processing.
What could change before March 2027
Dated status table, as of 2026-11:
| Item | Status as of 2026-11-01 | What it means for a Class of 2027 new grad |
|---|---|---|
| FY2028 H-1B registration | Not announced | Watch the USCIS page; 30 days' notice required |
| Wage-weighted selection | In effect since 2026-02-27 | Your role's wage level affects your odds |
| OPT fees ($70,000 initial, $30,000 each later) | Proposed; comments close 2026-11-09 | Would reach only DSO recommendations dated 60+ days after a final rule; the school pays and may pass the cost on |
| $100,000 H-1B fee (Proclamation 11069) | In effect on paper to 2027-09-21; collection blocked | Even if collection resumed, the USCIS H-1B page (updated 2026-09-21) says a change of status USCIS grants inside the US is not covered; a denied one would be |
| $103,265 fee for certain cap-subject petitions | Proposed; comments closed 2026-09-24; no final rule | Nothing changes unless a final rule is published |
| Duration of Status rule | Blocked since 2026-09-14; summary judgment briefed; DHS appeal pending | D/S and the 60-day F-1 grace period still apply |
| OPT unemployment limits | In effect, unchanged | 90 days on OPT; 150 in aggregate on STEM OPT |
Step by step: lining up an offer with OPT and the lottery
- Confirm your I-20 program end date with your DSO before giving any recruiter a start date.
- Ask each recruiter by email, at the offer stage, about start-date flexibility, H-1B registration, wage level and E-Verify.
- Ask your DSO when to request your OPT recommendation, so its 30-day SEVIS clock overlaps the filing window.
- File Form I-765 with USCIS inside both windows; premium processing on Form I-907 is optional.
- Start work only with the EAD in hand, on or after its start date, then report your employer through the SEVP Portal or as your DSO directs.
- Prepare the STEM OPT I-765 and Form I-983 with your employer in case you are not selected.
Common mistakes
- Giving a recruiter your ceremony date. The OPT window and the 60-day deadline run from the program end date on your I-20, which can differ.
- Answering "no" to the future-sponsorship question because OPT needs none. The question usually reaches the H-1B that follows.
- Accepting a start date the processing tool cannot support, with no agreement on a late EAD.
- Asking your DSO too early, so the 30-day clock lapses before the window opens.
- Assuming every weekend deadline rolls over. Under USCIS policy PA-2026-15 (in effect since 2026-10-23), a day-counted paper deadline ending on a weekend or holiday is met by the next business day; the Policy Manual says online filings are received on submission and never roll. Confirm your dates with your DSO.
Frequently asked questions
How long does the new grad software engineer interview process take?
There is no official average, and each employer sets its own pace. Each stage, from online assessment to written offer, can take a few days to a few weeks, with team match often the longest. On F-1 OPT, your first day also waits for USCIS to approve your EAD.
When should I apply for new grad roles if I graduate in May?
Apply as soon as new grad postings for your term appear, often the late summer and fall before at large tech employers; if that has passed, apply now and keep applying through spring. You cannot file for OPT earlier than 90 days before you complete your degree, which is February 13, 2027 for a May 14, 2027 end date.
Will a new grad offer wait for my OPT EAD?
You can sign first, but you cannot start work until USCIS approves your Form I-765 and you receive the EAD. On November 1, 2026 the USCIS tool showed 80% of F-1 student I-765 cases completed within 5 months, so ask in writing whether your start date can move if the card is late.
What happens to my offer if I'm not selected in the H-1B lottery?
That depends on the employer's policy and your offer letter, not on a federal rule. An employer may keep you on OPT or STEM OPT and register you again next season, consider another visa, or end the role. FY2027 had no second selection round, so ask before you sign.
How many lottery chances do STEM OPT students get?
The rules set no number. Up to 12 months of OPT plus the 24-month STEM extension gives up to 36 months of work authorization, which by our arithmetic usually spans three March registration seasons. FY2028 registration had not been announced as of November 1, 2026.
