Online Assessments for New Grads on OPT: CodeSignal GCA, HackerRank and the Sponsorship Filter Before the Test
The CodeSignal GCA is four questions in 70 minutes, but on OPT the smarter first move is checking whether the employer can hire you before you spend a week preparing.

The CodeSignal General Coding Assessment (GCA) is a standardized online assessment of four coding questions in 70 minutes, scored from 200 to 600, that many employers send to new-grad software candidates, and one result can often go to several employers. HackerRank and Codility tests differ: each employer builds its own, and your code is graded against test cases you mostly cannot see. On F-1 OPT, the most valuable step comes before you open any link: check whether the employer hires people who need sponsorship, because your OPT unemployment days keep counting while you practice.
Status as of 2026-11-01. OPT unemployment limits are in effect and unchanged at 90 days on post-completion OPT and 150 days in aggregate with STEM OPT, per SEVP's SEVIS Help Hub (updated 2026-07-27). STEM OPT still requires an employer enrolled in E-Verify (in effect). FY2028 H-1B registration is not announced. The DHS OPT fee rule, with the school as the legal payer, is only proposed (comments close 2026-11-09; check the Federal Register for the outcome after that date) and changes nothing about your OPT today.
What is the CodeSignal General Coding Assessment?
The CodeSignal General Coding Assessment is a standardized test that CodeSignal builds for screening early-career software candidates. It has four questions of varying difficulty, a 70-minute limit unless the employer sets another, camera and ID proctoring when the employer requires it, and one Assessment Score from 200 to 600. Each employer sets its own cutoff, and one result can often go to several employers.
CodeSignal's page on how the GCA is structured (updated 2026-10-13) says all four questions open when the timer starts, you answer them in any order inside CodeSignal's own editor (outside IDEs are not permitted), and responses are scored on correctness, speed, implementation and problem solving. It lists 38 GCA languages, Python 3, Java and C++ among them, and the inviting company can narrow the choice; our comparison of Python vs Java for coding interviews covers that decision.
Two rules on the GCA rules page (read 2026-11-01) shape your strategy. On grading: "Our system will always use your highest-scoring submission as your final, graded submission for the question." On outside help, searches are for syntax reference only, and "the use of AI is not allowed, including syntax search." Looking up how to insert into a C++ queue is fine; looking up how to build the structure the question asks for is not.
How should you pace the 70 minutes?
Read all four questions first, then start with the one you can finish fastest. Because the highest-scoring submission counts, submit a working partial solution as soon as it passes some tests, then improve it.
- Submit before you switch tasks. CodeSignal saves your code only when you submit.
- Do not plan a break. CodeSignal says the 70 minutes are taken in one sitting.
- Start setup early. The timer begins only after the camera, ID and rules steps, so give yourself 15 minutes.
What is a good CodeSignal score for new grads?
There is no universal "good" score: each employer chooses its own cut score, and CodeSignal's Assessment Score page says only that higher scores mean more questions completed. The best primary reference is CodeSignal's table converting the older Coding Score, the scale quoted in older forum posts, to today's 200-600 scale.
GCA score reference, as of 2026-11 (CodeSignal conversion article, updated 2026-04-15; population = GCA test-takers from 2021-01-01 to 2022-12-31)
| Older Coding Score | Equivalent Assessment Score (200-600) | Share of 2021-22 test-takers at or below |
|---|---|---|
| 700 | 389 | 34% |
| 750 | 481 | 73% |
| 775 | 523 | 83% |
| 800 | 532 | 86% |
| 825 | 557 | 91% |
| 850 (top of the older table) | 600 | 100% |
Common misconception: "You need an 850 to pass the screen." Correction: 850 is the top of CodeSignal's older table. Every certified assessment now reports 200 to 600, CodeSignal calls its suggested cut scores "for reference only", and each employer sets its own threshold.
Read by its percentile column, an Assessment Score near 500 sat around the 77th to 80th percentile of 2021-22 test-takers, and 600 is the ceiling. CodeSignal built the table to convert employers' cut scores, not individual results, so aim for your best attempt rather than a forum number.
CodeSignal vs HackerRank vs Codility: what changes for you
The biggest difference is who writes the test: the GCA is standardized, while HackerRank and Codility tests are assembled by each employer, so length, question mix and integrity settings vary.
Online assessment platforms compared, as of 2026-11 (vendor help pages read 2026-11-01)
| CodeSignal GCA | HackerRank | Codility | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Who writes it | CodeSignal (standardized) | The employer, from HackerRank's library or its own questions | The employer, from Codility's task library or its own |
| Length | 4 questions, 70 minutes unless the employer changes it | Set by the employer | Set by the employer |
| Scoring | One Assessment Score, 200-600 | Per question, by test cases, including hidden ones | Share of test cases passed; correctness, plus performance on algorithmic tasks |
| One result, many employers | Often: share an eligible past result, unless the employer's age limit or proctoring rule excludes it | Plan to take each employer's test | Plan to take each employer's test |
| Integrity | Camera, microphone, screen share and photo ID when proctored | Copy-paste and tab tracking by default; Secure Mode, Proctor Mode, Desktop App Mode or webcam snapshots if the employer turns them on | Proctoring off by default; the employer can turn on paste and tab tracking, webcam snapshots or screen recording |
| Outside resources | Syntax look-ups only; no AI | Whatever the test instructions allow | Only what the test's policy permits |
Codility's automated scoring page says the example test case does not count, every task has at least six test cases, and failing 4 of 10 scores 60%. HackerRank's test cases page says hidden test cases "are not visible to candidates". The integrity row comes from HackerRank's test integrity page and Codility's proctoring page (updated 2026-06-26), which says proctoring "is disabled by default".
Can I reuse my CodeSignal score?
Usually, yes. CodeSignal's page on sharing results (read 2026-11-01) says a new invitation lets you share an eligible existing result or retake, if you are outside the cooldown period. A retake carries a real cost: "if you choose to proceed with a retake and earn a lower score, the company requesting the assessment will only receive your new result." If that same company already has an earlier result of yours, it keeps that one too.
The limits, from CodeSignal's cooldown article and its Take Now page:
- GCA attempts: two within 30 days and three within 180 days, one attempt per invitation. CodeSignal's example: attempts on January 1 and January 8 mean no new attempt until February 1; a third on February 1 means no fourth until July 1.
- Automatic new attempts. Incomplete attempts lost to technical issues CodeSignal identifies do not count, and you get a fresh attempt when the employer requires proctoring and your past attempts were unproctored, or when your scores are older than its age limit. Those two cases are also why "Share Existing" can be missing.
- No second accounts. CodeSignal says using another account to dodge a cooldown is not permitted.
That makes your first GCA a score that may travel. Take it when your timed practice is consistent, ideally for an employer you have already checked for sponsorship history, not as a warm-up.
What do the proctoring rules mean for international candidates?
Proctored tests record you, so prepare the room and the ID before test day. CodeSignal's proctoring page (read 2026-11-01) says you share your camera, microphone and screen for the whole session and show a government-issued, unexpired photo ID with your full name and photo.
- You may redact. CodeSignal needs the photo, full name and expiration date visible and lets you redact the rest. A valid passport is government-issued photo ID, so it fits the rule as written.
- Match your ID name. Enter your name as it appears on the ID. CodeSignal asks anyone with a preferred name to contact its support team; do that before test day if the name on your applications differs from your passport.
- Retention is short. CodeSignal says ID and proctoring data is reviewed only by CodeSignal, deleted within 15 days and not shared with the employer.
Under HackerRank's Proctor Mode, which the employer enables, tab switches and full-screen exits are flagged, copy-paste is disabled, the webcam flags absence, extra faces and phones, and screenshots are checked for outside AI assistants. Test alone, on one monitor, phone out of view.
Do companies check sponsorship before sending an online assessment?
Sometimes, but an invitation is not proof an employer sponsors. An applicant tracking system can send the assessment automatically, and a recruiter may apply the sponsorship filter only after you pass.
The data is thin and comes from one vendor. Match.dev, reviewing 2,718 engineering roles at 136 companies (postings read 2026-10-13), reported that 88.1% of postings said nothing about sponsorship while 90.7% of application forms asked about it. Our explainer on what happens after you answer Workday's sponsorship question walks through the knockout and manual-review paths.
Answer truthfully. If you expect to need an employer-filed petition, such as an H-1B, to keep working after OPT, the honest answer to a "now or in the future" question is usually yes. Your status surfaces anyway, on the STEM OPT Form I-983 training plan the employer signs or at H-1B time, and a late surprise can cost the offer. Your DSO can confirm your OPT dates; a licensed immigration attorney is the right person for sponsorship strategy.
Which online assessments deserve your time on OPT?
Rank invitations by evidence that the employer hires visa holders, not by brand. Indeed Hiring Lab found software's entry-level share of postings was 4.5% in Q1 2026, and its Software Development postings index was about 78-79 in its 2026-10-22 snapshot (February 1, 2020 = 100), the lowest of the five sectors charted. With junior roles that scarce, each prep day counts.
- Reread the posting and your answers in Workday, Greenhouse or whichever portal you used. A posting that rules out sponsorship "now or in the future" goes to the bottom.
- Search the employer's legal entity in the USCIS H-1B Employer Data Hub, which says it covers fiscal years 2009 through 2026 (quarter 4) as of 2026-11-01. Look at initial approvals across several years; our guide to building a sponsor list from LCA and Data Hub records shows how.
- Check DOL's OFLC disclosure data (latest files cover FY2026 Q3, through 2026-06-30) for software-developer LCAs filed by that entity.
- Run the employer through the E-Verify employer search if you will want STEM OPT; USCIS's STEM OPT page says the employer must "Be enrolled in E-Verify". Our E-Verify employer lookup guide covers name mismatches.
- Confirm your unemployment count with your DSO. SEVIS looks back to your actual OPT start date and counts each day with no employer information, as our explainer on how STEM OPT unemployment days count details. Practicing for tests is not employment.
- Choose a prep level: full preparation, one timed mock, or a polite decline. If you need more time, ask the recruiter before the invitation expires; CodeSignal says an expired invitation needs a new one from the recruiter, and a new one is "not guaranteed".
A worked triage with real dates
Say your post-completion OPT started on 2026-09-15 and no employer is in SEVIS. By 2026-11-01 that is about 48 days used and about 42 left, so day 90 falls around 2026-12-13 (your DSO's count governs). On Monday, 2026-11-02, three invitations arrive:
| Invitation | What the checks show | Sensible call |
|---|---|---|
| A: large software company, CodeSignal GCA | Posting silent; initial H-1B approvals in several recent Data Hub years; E-Verify enrolled | Full prep; test around 2026-11-08, knowing the score may travel to other GCA employers |
| B: fintech, HackerRank | Application ruled out sponsorship now or in the future; you answered truthfully and still got the link | Likely auto-sent; email the recruiter one line before investing hours |
| C: startup, Codility | Silent posting; no Data Hub records; not found in E-Verify search | Ask the recruiter; post-completion OPT work may be possible, but STEM OPT there would need E-Verify enrollment first |
The scarce resource is not the 70 minutes. It is calendar time, because the unemployment count keeps running while you prepare.
A 14-day online assessment practice plan
Two weeks sharpens speed if your fundamentals are in place; if they are not, follow our coding interview prep timeline for international students and start earlier.
| Days | Focus | What you should be able to do |
|---|---|---|
| 1-2 | Environment: CodeSignal's practice area and a plain browser editor | Code fluently without your usual IDE; the practice area has one question per type, so use it for the interface, not volume |
| 3-5 | Implementation drills: arrays, strings, matrices, careful simulation | Three or four problems a day, 15-20 minutes each |
| 6-8 | Core patterns: hash maps, sorting, two pointers, prefix sums, basic BFS and DFS | Name the pattern within two minutes of reading |
| 9 | First full 70-minute mock, four problems | Submit something on every problem |
| 10-11 | Hidden-test discipline | Write five edge cases (empty, one item, duplicates, maximum size, negatives) before each submission |
| 12 | Second mock under proctored conditions | One monitor, camera on, phone away, ID on the desk |
| 13 | Review | Redo every missed problem; drill your weakest pattern |
| 14 | Rest and logistics | Charger, stable internet, a quiet room at your best hour |
How should I practice for HackerRank tests?
Practice the way the test grades you: against test cases you cannot see. HackerRank says its hidden test cases check "edge conditions and unseen scenarios", and Codility says an "OK" after "Run" only verifies the example test case, so a passing example proves little.
- Write your own tests for empty input, one element, duplicates and the largest input the constraints allow.
- Check complexity. Codility scores performance separately on algorithmic tasks; a correct but slow solution can fail large cases.
- Read the instructions for question types, section timing and which integrity mode is on.
Common mistakes
- Preparing for a week for an employer whose application said it will not sponsor. Check first.
- Retaking the GCA twice in one week. That uses both 30-day attempts; the next opens only when the first attempt is 30 days old.
- Assuming the employer sees your best score. After a retake, it gets the new result, even if lower.
- Using AI or searching for solution logic. The GCA allows syntax look-ups only.
- Thinking test days pause the OPT clock. SEVIS counts every day with no employer information on record.
- Shading the sponsorship answer. It surfaces later and can cost the offer.
Frequently asked questions
What is the CodeSignal General Coding Assessment?
It is CodeSignal's standardized screening test for early-career software candidates, with four coding questions in 70 minutes unless the employer sets another length, proctored when the employer requires it. CodeSignal's help pages (checked 2026-11-01) say it reports one Assessment Score from 200 to 600.
What is a good CodeSignal score for new grads?
There is no universal passing score, because each employer sets its own cut score. On the 200-600 scale, CodeSignal's conversion table, built on 2021-22 test-takers, puts 86 percent of them at or below 532. Treat forum cutoffs as anecdotes.
Can I reuse my CodeSignal score?
Often, yes. A new GCA request lets you share an eligible past result or retake, but after a retake the requesting employer gets only the new result, even if lower, and the GCA allows two attempts in 30 days and three in 180. An employer's age limit or proctoring rule can exclude an old result.
Do companies check sponsorship before sending an online assessment?
Some do and some do not. In one vendor's October 2026 sample (Match.dev), 90.7 percent of application forms asked about sponsorship, but an invitation can go out automatically and a recruiter may filter after you pass. Answer truthfully, then check the USCIS H-1B Employer Data Hub and, for STEM OPT, E-Verify before investing prep time.
How should I practice for HackerRank tests?
Write your own edge-case tests, check performance on large inputs and practice in a plain browser editor, because HackerRank grades coding questions against hidden test cases. Do two timed mocks and read each test's instructions, since the employer picks integrity settings such as Secure Mode or Proctor Mode.
