TN Visa Interview Questions: What Mexican Applicants Face at the Consulate and Canadians at the Border
Mexican TN applicants interview at a consulate, under a public-profile review since October 2026; Canadians face a CBP officer at the border. Here are the questions.

Part of our guide to US visa interviews.
As of November 1, 2026, TN visa interview questions test the same four things they always have: whether your job matches a profession listed in USMCA Appendix 2, whether your degree or license qualifies you for it, whether your employer's letter backs both up, and whether your stay is temporary. Mexican citizens answer them at an in-person consular interview, and since 2026-10-01 under a State Department online-presence review (in effect). Canadian citizens usually answer them to a CBP officer at a port of entry or preclearance, with no visa and outside that review.
Status line, as of 2026-11-01:
- Online-presence review: in effect for I, TN and TD visa applicants since 2026-10-01; applicants are told to set social media profiles to "public" or "open". MIT's International Students Office notes it "does not apply to Canadian citizens who do not apply for U.S. entry visa stamps."
- USMCA: in force, not renewed. At the 2026-07-01 joint review USTR said the agreement is not renewed but remains in force. TN rules and fees are unchanged.
- Worker 60-day grace period: proposed for elimination (RIN 1615-AD22), including for TN workers and TD dependents. Comments close 2026-11-10 at 11:59 p.m. ET (check the Federal Register docket for the outcome after 2026-11-10). Today's up-to-60-day grace period under 8 CFR 214.1(l)(2) still applies; our guide for anyone laid off on TN explains it.
What questions are asked in a TN visa interview?
A TN visa interview tests four points: that your job falls in a USMCA Appendix 2 profession, that your degree or license qualifies you for it, that a US employer has prearranged the work, and that your stay is temporary. Expect questions on your title, daily duties, education, employer, salary, length of stay and future plans.
The standard comes from 8 CFR 214.6, which defines temporary entry as "entry without the intent to establish permanent residence" and adds: "A temporary period has a reasonable, finite end that does not equate to permanent residence." For eligibility basics, start with our complete TN guide for Canadians and Mexicans; this page is the question bank.
Consulate vs border: who asks, and where
The questions match. Who asks them, and what you file first, differ.

| Form DS-160 | Required | Only if you apply for a visa |
| Online-presence review | Applies since 2026-10-01, to you and to TD family | Not unless you apply for a visa stamp; a non-Canadian spouse or child's TD visa is covered |

The TN visa interview questions, by topic
Expect some version of every row. The right-hand column is not a script; it is the document your truthful answer should already match.
TN question bank, as of 2026-11. Based on 8 CFR 214.6, USCIS Policy Manual Vol. 2, Part P, and State's TN page.
| Question you may hear | What it tests | What should back your answer |
|---|---|---|
| What is your job title, and which TN profession are you applying under? | The Appendix 2 match | Letter naming the profession |
| Walk me through a normal workday. | Professional-level duties in that category | The letter's summary of daily duties |
| Who is your employer, and who supervises you? | A prearranged job with a US employer | Offer letter or contract |
| Do you own any part of the company? | Self-employment, which "does not qualify" (USCIS); a sole or controlling owner counts as self-employed (8 CFR 214.6(b)) | Ownership facts as they are |
| What is your degree, and how does it relate to this job? | Credentials for the profession | Diploma or degree; a credentials evaluation if it is from outside the US, Canada or Mexico |
| Does this profession need a license? | Licensure where required | License, or the letter's explanation |
| How long will the job last? | A predictable end | The letter's length of stay |
| What will you be paid? | Remuneration arrangements | Letter or offer |
| What happens after this assignment? | Temporary entry | Your own account |
| Has anyone filed a labor certification or green card petition for you? | Intent | Your actual filings |
| Have you held TN or another US status before? Any refusals? | History | Old visas, I-94s, I-797s |
| Is your family coming, and how will you support them? | TD eligibility | Salary in the letter |
State's TN page says you "must be able to show your ability to financially support your family in the United States." A spouse or child who is a Canadian citizen needs no visa; any other spouse or child applies for a TD visa and falls under the same profile review. State adds that a Canadian living outside Canada with a non-Canadian spouse or children "will need a TN visa in order for the family member(s) to be eligible to apply for derivative TD nonimmigrant visa(s)." See our guide to TD status for TN dependents.
Why the job-title question carries the most weight
Appendix 2 lists professions, not job titles, and the officer compares your duties with the category. "Software engineer" is not on the list, so a tech offer has to fit a listed category such as Computer Systems Analyst or Engineer on its actual daily work. See our TN occupation list of the 63 professions and our explainer on whether software engineer is a TN profession.
If the letter's category and your real job do not line up, raise it with your employer's immigration attorney before the interview: the question is whether any listed category fits the work you will actually do, or whether TN fits at all. It is never solved by how you phrase an answer.
What the employer letter must cover
8 CFR 214.6(d)(3)(ii) lists five items: the Appendix 2 profession, a description of the activities "including a brief summary of daily job duties, if appropriate", the anticipated length of stay, your qualifications, and "the arrangements for remuneration". The same paragraph says a degree from a school outside Canada, Mexico or the US "must be accompanied by an evaluation by a reliable credentials evaluation service." Most interview questions are those five items asked aloud; our TN employer support letter guide covers each one. Your answers should also match what you told the employer when you applied, so see how TN applicants answer the sponsorship question.
How do I answer questions about green card plans on TN?
Truthfully, and consistently with your records. TN is not dual intent, so the officer weighs whether your assignment "will end at a predictable time" and you "will depart upon completion of the assignment" (8 CFR 214.6(b)).
The USCIS Policy Manual chapter on TN eligibility restates that test and does not mention labor certifications or immigrant petitions at all. Our reading: that chapter neither bars a PERM or I-140 outright nor calls it irrelevant, so it is a fact an officer may weigh. Whether a PERM or I-140 affects your next interview, entry or renewal is a question for an immigration attorney before you travel; our explainer on TN, dual intent and the 90-day rule covers timing.
One line is never worth crossing: USCIS lists "fraud or willful misrepresentation made in connection with obtaining an immigration benefit" as a ground of inadmissibility (Policy Manual Vol. 8, Part J).
Do Mexicans need an interview for a TN visa?
Generally yes. State's TN page says "Interviews are generally required for visa applicants with certain limited exceptions" and that consular officers "may require an interview of any visa applicant." Under State's interview-waiver update (effective 2025-10-01), the remaining waivers cover B-1/B-2 and Border Crossing Card renewals, H-2A renewals within 12 months and diplomatic classes; TN is not among them.
Check the Global Visa Wait Times page for your post rather than a forum number. In a 2026-10-30 outlook, Mintz wrote that 221(g) administrative-processing holds "can delay issuance for weeks or months" and that social-media vetting of H, F, J and M applicants "is adding time". TN applicants joined that review on 2026-10-01, so leave a margin before any start date.
What documents should I bring to a TN interview in Mexico?
- Confirm the Appendix 2 category with your employer and its attorney (the USCIS TN page has the basic rules).
- Get an employer letter covering the five items in 8 CFR 214.6(d)(3)(ii).
- Complete Form DS-160 on State's online system, list every social media identifier it asks for, and print the confirmation page.
- Set your social media profiles to "public" or "open", as State's online-presence review instructs.
- Pay the visa application fee and book two visits through Mission Mexico's appointment system: its Applicant Service Center page says "fingerprints and digital photographs will be collected" at the ASC, at least one day before the interview. A visa issuance fee may follow approval, "if applicable to your nationality" (State). The $250 Visa Integrity Fee is unclear as of 2026-11-01 (no Federal Register implementation notice), though BU's ISSO reported that "some consular posts have begun charging" it.
- Pack your passport, DS-160 confirmation, fee receipt, the letter, your diploma or degree, a credentials evaluation for a degree from outside the US, Canada or Mexico, any required license, former-employer letters if your category relies on experience, and earlier US visas, I-94s and I-797s. State says "A photo is not required if you are applying in Mexico."
- Attend the consular interview, then present your passport and TN visa to CBP at a port of entry.
- Check your I-94 on the CBP I-94 website.
What Canadians get asked at the border or preclearance
The same bank, asked by a CBP officer at admission. Expect the officer to read your letter, check your original degree, and refer you to secondary inspection if anything needs a closer look.
- Decide with your employer whether to apply at the port or have the employer file Form I-129 with USCIS first (premium processing: 15 business days, $2,965). The I-129 TN time was 4.5 months on the USCIS processing-times tool on 2026-11-01, and from 2026-11-09 USCIS accepts only the 09/09/26 I-129 edition.
- Bring proof of Canadian citizenship, the employer letter, your degree, a credentials evaluation for a degree from outside the US, Canada or Mexico, and payment for the fee 8 CFR 214.6(e) says Canadians pay on admission (or the I-797 approval if you used USCIS).
- Present at a Class A port of entry, a US airport handling international traffic, or a preclearance station.
- Answer the CBP officer's questions in your own words.
- Check your I-94 on the CBP I-94 website the same day; it sets how long you can stay.
For context, USCIS approved 94.9% of the TN petitions it decided in FY2026 Q1-Q3 (initial and extension filings), with a 13.0% RFE rate (USCIS I-129 data). That covers USCIS-filed petitions only, not consular or port-of-entry decisions, and predates PA-2026-05 (in effect since 2026-08-05, challenged), which lets USCIS deny without first sending an RFE or NOID.
Does the social media vetting apply to Canadians applying for TN?
Not to Canadians who apply at a port of entry or preclearance without a visa. MIT's office says the review "does not apply to Canadian citizens who do not apply for U.S. entry visa stamps." In our reading it does reach a Canadian who applies for a TN visa (by choice, or because non-Canadian family abroad need TD visas) and any non-Canadian spouse or child applying for a TD visa.
CBP has its own authority. Under CBP's device-search policy (Directive 3340-049B, effective 2026-01-01), basic searches need no suspicion. CBP counted 52,081 device searches in FY2026 Q1-Q3, up from 39,251 a year earlier, and put FY2025 searches at "less than 0.01 percent" of arriving international travellers. See our guide to basic vs advanced CBP device searches.
Will the TN visa end because USMCA wasn't renewed?
No change as of 2026-11-01. On 2026-07-01 USTR said "the USMCA is not renewed" but that the agreement "remains in force pending resolution of these issues or until the Agreement's termination." Annual joint reviews follow. BAL reports "no immediate impact on TN nonimmigrant status or visas" and notes that the agreement "does not terminate until July 1, 2036." USTR's request for comments on the 2027 review sets a 2027-01-12 deadline and does not mention TN.
At the interview, the officer applies 8 CFR 214.6 as it stands today. If USMCA's terms ever change, rely on the USCIS TN page and an immigration attorney, not a forecast.
Common misconceptions, then corrections (as of 2026-11-01)
| What people say | What is true | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Mexicans need an approved I-129 before the consulate | They apply for the TN visa at a consulate with the employer letter | State and USCIS TN pages |
| The $750 fast appointment in Mexico works for TN | B-1/B-2 only, select Americas posts, through 2026-12-31 unless extended | Federal Register |
| The $100,000 H-1B fee applies to TN | Proclamation 11069 covers only H-1B | Proclamation text |
| TN must be renewed every year | Up to 3 years per admission or extension, "no specific limit on the total period" | 8 CFR 214.6 |
| The TN grace period is gone | Only proposed; the up-to-60-day period still applies; comments close 2026-11-10 | Federal Register docket |
| Canadians must make profiles public | Not when applying without a visa stamp; a non-Canadian spouse's TD visa is covered | MIT ISO, State TN page |
If you are on F-1, OPT or STEM OPT now
Moving from OPT or STEM OPT to TN, expect a question about your student status and how this job follows from your degree. Canadian students usually apply at a port of entry or preclearance, or use an I-129. Mexican students can have the employer file Form I-129 for a change of status inside the US, with no consular interview at that point, but a Mexican citizen needs a "valid TN nonimmigrant visa" to be admitted (8 CFR 214.6(d)(1)), so the interview comes with the next trip abroad. See our guides for Mexican students and Canadian students.
Your DSO handles the F-1 side (SEVIS record, OPT end date); an immigration attorney handles TN timing. If an OPT or STEM OPT I-765 is pending, talk to both before any trip: Cornell recommends "against traveling until you receive your OPT/STEM OPT EAD", and a missed biometrics appointment abroad can delay or deny the case. The F-1 60-day grace period still applies because the duration-of-status rule has been blocked by a federal court since 2026-09-14 (summary judgment briefed; DHS's appeal pending); the separate grace-period proposal covers workers, including TN.
Common mistakes
- Rehearsing answers that do not match the letter. Officers compare the two, and duties, not the title, decide the category; describe your real job.
- Leaving identifiers off the DS-160. A gap between the form and your profiles invites questions.
- Bringing a degree from outside the US, Canada or Mexico without a credentials evaluation, which 8 CFR 214.6(d)(3)(ii) requires.
- Assuming a Canadian's family is exempt. A non-Canadian spouse or child applies for a TD visa and faces the profile review.
- Guessing about green-card filings. Find out whether your employer filed PERM or an I-140 before the interview.
- Booking a start date the day after the appointment. Wait times and 221(g) holds vary.
- Skipping the I-94 check. Your admission record, not your letter, sets your stay.
Frequently asked questions
What questions are asked in a TN visa interview?
Officers ask about your job title and the USMCA profession it falls under, your daily duties, your degree or license, your US employer and pay, how long the job lasts and your plans afterward. Each question tests a requirement in 8 CFR 214.6, including temporary entry. As of November 2026 the questions are essentially the same at a Mexican consular interview and a Canadian border application.
Do Mexicans need an interview for a TN visa?
Generally yes. Mexican citizens need a TN visa from a US embassy or consulate, and TN is not on State's remaining interview-waiver list, which since 2025-10-01 covers B-1/B-2 and Border Crossing Card renewals, H-2A renewals within 12 months and diplomatic classes. Plan for an in-person interview and check the live wait-times page.
Does the social media vetting apply to Canadians applying for TN?
Not if you apply at a port of entry or preclearance without a visa. State's online-presence review, in effect for I, TN and TD visa applicants since 2026-10-01, covers visa applicants only, so it does reach a non-Canadian spouse or child applying for a TD visa. CBP keeps its separate authority to inspect travellers and devices at the border.
How do I answer questions about green card plans on TN?
Truthfully and consistently with your records. TN is not dual intent, and 8 CFR 214.6 requires an assignment that ends at a predictable time and a departure when it does. Find out what your employer has actually filed, and if it has started PERM or an I-140 for you, talk to an immigration attorney before your next interview, entry or renewal.
Will the TN visa end because USMCA wasn't renewed?
Not as of November 1, 2026. USTR said at the 2026-07-01 joint review that USMCA is not renewed but remains in force, and TN eligibility, professions, procedure and fees are unchanged. Comments for the 2027 review are due 2027-01-12.

How we checked this: on 2026-11-01 we read the USCIS and State Department TN pages, the text of 8 CFR 214.6, the USCIS Policy Manual, the G-1055 fee schedule, Mission Mexico's ASC page, USTR's two USMCA releases, the Federal Register docket and CBP's device-search data. This is general information, not legal or tax advice; your own visa, I-94 and notices, your DSO (for anything F-1 or OPT) and a licensed immigration attorney (for TN strategy) govern over anything published here.
If you are a Canadian or Mexican student on OPT weighing roles you could take on TN or H-1B, F1Jobs can help you run a focused search for employers that hire international candidates.
