USCIS Case Status Says Your Receipt Number Is Invalid? Why It Happens and What to Do

A receipt number the USCIS tool rejects is usually a typo, a brand-new case or the wrong kind of number. Here is how to tell which one, and when to escalate.

If USCIS Case Status Online says your receipt number is not valid, it usually comes down to one of three things. The first is format: the number is 13 characters, three letters then ten digits, typed with no dashes or spaces. The second is a brand-new case that has not reached the public tool yet. The third is a number that is not a USCIS receipt number at all. A real data problem on USCIS's side is a fourth possibility, and it is the one that needs escalation. Rule out the first three before you call anyone.

Status as of 2026-11-01. In effect: USCIS's instructions for entering a receipt number are unchanged; its case status guidance page was last updated 2020-08-25. Scheduled: from 2026-11-09 USCIS accepts only the 09/09/26 edition of Form I-129. Grace ends: the filing addresses USCIS replaced on 2026-10-07 work only for packages postmarked on or before 2026-11-09. A package rejected for either reason leaves no pending case for the tool to find (more on this below).

Why does USCIS say my receipt number is not valid?

Case Status Online rejects a receipt number when the characters you typed do not match a case in USCIS's system. The usual reasons are a typo or wrong format, a new case that has not posted to the public tool yet, or a different number, such as an A-Number, SEVIS ID or I-94 number, entered by mistake.

USCIS publishes no explanation of the message, and the wording varies: people on immigration forums report a "Validation Error(s)" banner, a line saying the receipt number entered is invalid, or a note that the number does not exist. Whatever the wording, it means "no match." It does not mean your case was denied, and it says nothing about your status.

Keep one distinction in mind: the public tool only displays data. Your Form I-797C is the record. USCIS's I-797 types page says the I-797C is "issued to communicate receipt or rejection" of applications and petitions, along with transfers and appointments. For what each part of the number and each status message means, see our guide to reading your receipt notice and case status messages.

Do you enter the receipt number with or without dashes?

Without. USCIS's page says the receipt number "is a unique 13-character identifier," that it "consists of three letters followed by 10 numbers," and that you should omit the dashes. Type it as one unbroken string, exactly as printed in the Receipt Number box of your notice. Some guides say a hyphenated number also works; follow USCIS's instruction instead.

Format rules from USCIS's Checking Your Case Status Online page, read 2026-11-01.

Copying from a PDF, photo or chat app is a common source of slips: text recognition can swap O and 0, and pasting can carry invisible characters. Type it by hand once, from the original notice.

About the payment clue: since 2025-10-28, USCIS takes paper-filing fees by card (Form G-1450) or bank debit (Form G-1650), apart from narrow exemptions. A charge suggests the package reached intake; it is not proof a case exists.

How long until a new receipt number works on case status?

As of 2026-11-01, USCIS does not publish a timeline for a new receipt to appear in the public tool. It does describe how receipts are created. For an electronic filing, "once submitted, USCIS labels the case accepted and assigns a receipt number in the filer's account," according to the USCIS Policy Manual, Volume 1, Part B, Chapter 6. A paper filing is received on the date it physically arrives at the USCIS lockbox or designated filing facility, and that date prints in the Received Date box of the I-797C that follows by mail.

So if you filed online, look in your account first; a same-day miss in the public tool means very little. If you filed on paper, the notice in your hand is the record, and a day when the tool cannot find it does not undo that. Forum threads report a wide range of posting lags; those are anecdotes, not a USCIS commitment.

When a lag stops being "just a lag"

Escalate sooner, rather than waiting, in these situations:

Can you see the case in your USCIS online account if the public tool fails?

Often, yes, and it is the best second check. Online filings appear in the filer's account automatically. For a paper filing, USCIS's account instructions say to choose "Add a paper-filed case," then "Enter your receipt number, and you can then see your case status and history." With an IOE receipt number and the Online Access Code from your USCIS Account Access Notice, the account also shows notices and lets you upload evidence, respond to RFEs and send secure messages.

What the result tells you:

Our guide to linking a paper-filed case to your USCIS online account covers the Online Access Code and resets step by step. An account makes the case visible. It does not make it faster.

Special cases for OPT, H-1B and H-4 filers

OPT and STEM OPT I-765s

F-1 students can file the (c)(3)(A), (B) and (C) I-765 online, which puts an IOE receipt in the account at submission. As a dated snapshot, USCIS's processing times tool, read 2026-11-01, showed 80% of (c)(3) F-1 student cases completed within 5 months. A receipt that appears and then sits for weeks is normal. A receipt that never appears is the thing to chase. Your DSO handles the SEVIS side, such as the I-20 recommendation; USCIS handles the I-765.

Employer-filed H-1B petitions

On an I-129, your employer is the petitioner and you are the beneficiary, so the I-797C goes to the employer or its attorney of record. Ask HR for a scan of the full notice, not a retyped number; Case Status Online needs only the number, so you can then check it yourself. A missing notice or a correction is generally the petitioner's to request. Our guide to tracking an H-1B through every stage shows which system covers which step, and if the number works but nothing moves, see what to do when an H-1B case status is stuck for months.

H-4 and other family filings

Each form gets its own receipt number. An H-4 I-539 and an H-4 EAD I-765 filed with the H-1B petition each have one, separate from the petition's, so check each number against its own notice. Our guide to checking H-4 EAD case status covers the rest.

Paper packages around the November 9 cutoff

For filings mailed to the wrong place, USCIS's filing-locations update warns "we may reject it as improperly filed and return it to you to re-file at the proper location," and the Policy Manual adds that a rejected case "does not retain its original filing date when resubmitted." Our explainer on the November 9 filing-address and I-129 edition cutoff lists the forms affected.

Numbers that are not your receipt number

Many "invalid" errors come from entering the wrong number entirely.

What to do when the receipt number never works

  1. Pull the original Form I-797C and read the Receipt Number box, or ask whoever filed (HR, your attorney) for a scan of it.
  2. Retype the 13 characters in Case Status Online, with no dashes or spaces and with capital letters, checking IOE against I0E.
  3. Open your USCIS online account and look for the case, or add it as a paper-filed case using the same receipt number.
  4. Ask the filer to confirm the number against their copy of the I-797C, and whether the package was accepted, rejected or returned.
  5. Call the USCIS Contact Center at 800-375-5283 (TTY 800-767-1833; from outside the US, 212-620-3418). It answers live calls and chats Monday to Friday, 8am to 8pm Eastern, per the page updated 2026-10-13. USCIS says "individuals who inquire about case status will be directed to check Case Status Online," so open by saying the tool does not recognize your receipt number, and note the date and any reference you are given. Our guide on reaching a live person at the USCIS Contact Center has call scripts.
  6. Submit an e-Request if your problem fits one of the four online request types in the USCIS Policy Manual, Volume 1, Part A, Chapter 4: a notice, card or document not received, a case outside normal processing time, an accommodation, or a typographic error. The online route assumes a working receipt number: USCIS's delivery-tracking page offers the non-delivery inquiry "if you know your receipt number," and otherwise points you to the Contact Center.
  7. Contact the CIS Ombudsman with DHS Form 7001 only after USCIS has had its chance. The Ombudsman's case assistance page says you "must have contacted USCIS in the last 90 days and given the agency at least 60 days to try to resolve your problem."
  8. Bring in your DSO or a licensed immigration attorney as soon as a status or work deadline depends on the case.

Who should you talk to: USCIS, your DSO or an attorney?

ProblemWho handles it
A receipt that never posted, a lost notice, a USCIS typo on a noticeUSCIS, through the Contact Center or e-Request
Anything F-1, OPT or SEVIS: your I-20 recommendation, unemployment days, what a delayed I-765 means for your program datesYour DSO
H-1B petitions, rejected or returned filings, any decision about refilingA licensed immigration attorney, usually the employer's for an H-1B

They are not interchangeable: a DSO does not prepare an H-1B petition, and the employer's attorney does not manage your SEVIS record.

Common mistakes

Frequently asked questions

Why does USCIS say my receipt number is invalid?

Case Status Online shows that error when the characters you entered do not match a case in its system. The usual causes are a typo or format slip, a brand-new case that has not reached the public tool yet, or a different number such as an A-Number, SEVIS ID or I-94 number. As of November 2026 USCIS publishes no separate explanation of the error, so rule out the format first.

Do I enter the receipt number with or without dashes?

Without. USCIS says to omit dashes when you enter the receipt number, which is 13 characters long, three letters followed by ten digits. Type it as one unbroken string with no spaces, and check that a prefix like IOE uses the letter O, not the digit zero.

How long until a new receipt number works on case status?

As of November 2026, USCIS does not publish a timeline. If you filed online, USCIS assigns the receipt number in your online account when you submit, so check the account first. For paper filings, forum reports of the lag vary widely and are anecdotal, so recheck over several days and call the USCIS Contact Center if the number still fails, sooner if a work or status deadline depends on the case.

Can I see the case in my online account if the public tool fails?

Usually, if the case is yours. Online filings appear in the filer's account automatically, and a paper-filed case can be added with its receipt number to see status and history. For a paper-filed case, notices, uploads and secure messages need an IOE receipt number plus the Online Access Code from your USCIS Account Access Notice. An employer-filed H-1B petition belongs to the employer, so ask HR or the attorney for a copy of the I-797C.

Who do I contact if the receipt number never works?

Start with whoever filed the case, then call the USCIS Contact Center at 800-375-5283 (TTY 800-767-1833), which answers live Monday to Friday, 8am to 8pm Eastern per its page updated 2026-10-13. Use e-Request for a missing notice, a USCIS typo or a case outside normal processing time. The CIS Ombudsman takes a request only if you contacted USCIS within the last 90 days and gave it at least 60 days to resolve the problem.

How we checked this: we read each uscis.gov, dhs.gov and Policy Manual page listed above on 2026-11-01 and checked every quote, date and deadline against them; the egov.uscis.gov tools are linked as the live source but were not quoted. Forum reports are described only as what people report, never as rules.

This is general information, not legal or tax advice. Your own receipt notice, I-20 and I-94 govern over anything published here, and your DSO or immigration attorney should guide any decision about your case.
