UX Design Interviews for International Designers: Portfolio Presentations, Whiteboard Challenges and OPT
A minute-by-minute whiteboard script, a portfolio talk that fits 30 to 45 minutes, and the CIP code and job-title checks that decide whether your design offer survives the visa process.

A UX whiteboard challenge is a 45- to 60-minute live exercise: you get a vague prompt ("design a parking app for a hospital"), ask questions, pick one user and one problem, sketch a flow, and defend your trade-offs out loud. You prepare by rehearsing one fixed script until it is automatic, pairing it with a 30- to 45-minute portfolio presentation built on two case studies and, if you are on F-1 OPT or STEM OPT, checking two things before the final round: the CIP code on your Form I-20 and the job title the employer would sponsor.
Status as of November 1, 2026: OPT unemployment limits are in effect and unchanged (90 days, 150 on STEM OPT); the OPT fee rule is only proposed (comments close 2026-11-09, and it stays a proposal unless DHS publishes a final rule); the $100,000 H-1B payment is blocked by court orders and not collected; FY2028 H-1B registration is not announced.
How do I prepare for a UX whiteboard challenge?
Prepare for a UX whiteboard challenge by rehearsing one repeatable structure until you can run it under pressure: ask clarifying questions first, choose one user and one problem, sketch two or three directions before committing to one, then close with edge cases, trade-offs and how you would test it. Interviewers score your reasoning out loud, not your drawing.
Practice with a timer, unseen prompts and a friend playing a skeptical product manager; the hard part is absorbing interruptions without losing your structure.
The 45-minute whiteboard script
| Minutes | Phase | What you do out loud | What the interviewer is scoring |
|---|---|---|---|
| 0-5 | Clarify | Ask about users, platform, constraints and what success means for the business | Curiosity, not assumptions |
| 5-10 | Frame | Write one primary user, one job to be done and one success metric in a corner of the board | Focus |
| 10-15 | Map | Sketch the current journey and mark where it breaks | Systems thinking |
| 15-28 | Explore, then converge | Sketch two or three directions fast, compare them against the metric, pick one | Range, then judgment |
| 28-36 | Detail | Draw key screens, including empty, error and loading states, plus one accessibility check | Craft and completeness |
| 36-42 | Validate | Say what you would test first, with whom, and what result would change your mind | Use of evidence |
| 42-45 | Recap | Summarize the user, the decision and the open risks, then invite questions | Communication |
Two habits help. First, write assumptions on the board ("Assumption: most visitors arrive by car") so the interviewer can correct them in seconds. Second, treat pushback as new research data: "That changes my primary user, so let me re-rank these two options."
Thinking out loud when English is your second language
The whiteboard rewards narration, which is harder when you think faster in Hindi or Mandarin than in English. You need signposts, not perfect fluency: "I'm going to make an assumption here," "Let me park that" and "I'll sketch quietly for thirty seconds, then walk you through it" keep the interviewer with you while buying time. Our guide to managing your accent and communication style in US interviews covers pacing. Interviewing from abroad? Test the whiteboard tool the day before and confirm the time zone in the invite itself.
The UX design interview process, stage by stage
Most US product design interview loops follow a similar sequence, though the order and number of rounds vary by company.
| Stage | Typical length | What is assessed | Where visa status comes up |
|---|---|---|---|
| Portfolio screen | Asynchronous | Clarity of case studies, relevance to the role | Rarely |
| Recruiter call | 20-30 min | Fit, level, salary range, logistics | The sponsorship question |
| Hiring manager call | 30-45 min | Depth on one project, how you work with product and engineering | Sometimes start-date questions |
| Portfolio presentation | 45-60 min slot, 30-45 min talking | Storytelling, decisions, impact | Context for work done abroad |
| Whiteboard or app critique | 45-60 min | Process under pressure, product sense | No |
| Take-home (instead of or alongside) | Hours to days | Craft, scoping, written communication | Your OPT unemployment clock keeps running |
| Cross-functional interviews | 30-45 min each | Collaboration, behavioral questions | No |
| Debrief and offer | Days to weeks | Level and title | Title, duties and wage level for any H-1B petition |
The market adds pressure at the junior end. Across US postings on Indeed, entry-level postings were down 7.5% year over year and senior-level postings up 14.7% as of May 2026, according to Indeed Hiring Lab. It is not a design-specific figure, but it argues for showing senior-style reasoning: trade-offs, metrics and how you handled disagreement.
For a take-home, scope it to the time suggested and write down your assumptions; our take-home assignment interview guide has the playbook. If a company offers to pay you for a design exercise, that is work: it needs work authorization that covers it on the days you do it, such as an OPT EAD whose start date has passed. Ask your DSO before you accept, including whether it should be reported.
How long should a UX portfolio presentation be?
Plan 30 to 45 minutes of talking inside a 45- to 60-minute slot, leaving at least 10 minutes for questions. That usually means two case studies of 15 to 20 minutes each, not five quick ones. If the panel asks for one deep case study, give it 25 to 30 minutes and keep a second in reserve.
A case-study arc that fits the time
- Open with the context and your role (2 minutes). Name the product, the users, the team size and exactly what you owned.
- State the problem and constraints (3 minutes). Include the business goal, the deadline and any technical or regulatory limit.
- Show the research and the insight (5 minutes). One or two findings that changed direction beat a slide of method logos.
- Walk through the options and the decision (6 minutes). Show the directions you rejected and why.
- Close with the outcome and what you would change (3 minutes). Use a number if you have one and a qualitative signal if you do not.
Translating work you did outside the US
Interviewers may not know a regional payments app or why your users preferred WhatsApp to email. Spend 30 seconds on market context (users, devices, connectivity, regulation), then state results in terms that travel: "cut checkout drop-off," not "improved the UPI flow." Short on US experience? See a UX research portfolio with no US work experience.
What is an app critique interview?
An app critique asks you to evaluate a live product, sometimes your choice and sometimes theirs, in 30 to 45 minutes. Use a fixed order: who the app is for, what job it does, what works and why, what does not, and what you would change first and how you would measure it.
Pick an app most US interviewers know, or give quick context for one from home. Critique decisions, not visuals: "Onboarding asks for a phone number before showing any value, which likely costs sign-ups" lands better than "the colors feel dated."
How do I present work under NDA from my home country?
Get permission first, anonymize second and rebuild when in doubt. Your own process and reasoning are usually yours to describe; the client's screens, data and strategy usually are not, and the agreement's wording decides.
- Re-read the NDA or employment contract and note what it covers and for how long; if it is unclear, ask a lawyer in the country whose law governs it.
- Email your former employer's HR or legal team for written permission to show specific screens in a password-protected interview deck.
- Remove client names, logos, real data and internal metrics, replacing numbers with ranges or relative changes ("roughly halved support tickets").
- Rebuild key screens in a neutral style with dummy content when permission is refused.
- Label the first slide "Details changed to protect confidentiality" so interviewers know why it looks generic.
- Present from your own copy, never by screen-sharing a former employer's Figma workspace or drive.
While in touch, ask whether they would later provide an experience letter describing your duties; an employer's immigration attorney may want one.
Is a UX design degree STEM OPT eligible?
It depends on the six-digit CIP code your school assigned to your program, shown on your Form I-20, not on the degree's name. Several design-adjacent codes are on the DHS STEM Designated Degree Program List; codes in the Visual and Performing Arts series (CIP 50), where art-school graphic and product design degrees typically sit, are not.
The list (last updated July 22, 2024, and still the one ice.gov links as current on 2026-11-01) applies 8 CFR 214.2(f)(10)(ii)(C)(2): a STEM field is one "included in the Department of Education's Classification of Instructional Programs taxonomy within the two-digit series containing engineering, biological sciences, mathematics, and physical sciences, or a related field" (DHS STEM Designated Degree Program List).
Design-related CIP codes on the DHS STEM list (as of 2026-11)
| CIP code | Title on the list | On the STEM list? |
|---|---|---|
| 30.3101 | Human Computer Interaction | Yes |
| 11.0105 | Human-Centered Technology Design | Yes |
| 11.0801 | Web Page, Digital/Multimedia and Information Resources Design | Yes |
| 11.0803 | Computer Graphics | Yes |
| 09.0702 | Digital Communication and Media/Multimedia | Yes |
| 10.0304 | Animation, Interactive Technology, Video Graphics, and Special Effects | Yes |
| 30.2501 | Cognitive Science, General | Yes |
| 42.2701 | Cognitive Psychology and Psycholinguistics | Yes |
| 30.7103 | Data Visualization | Yes |
| Any 50.xxxx code | Visual and Performing Arts series | No; the series is not among the 22 the list draws from |
Common misconception, then correction. Some guides list Human-Computer Interaction as CIP 11.0102. On the current DHS list, 11.0102 is Artificial Intelligence, and Human Computer Interaction is 30.3101. Check the exact six digits on your own I-20.
The job matters too. Study in the States (updated 2026-03-25) requires an E-Verify employer, bona fide employment with the employer signing Form I-983, at least 20 hours a week, and training that "has a direct relationship to the student's qualifying STEM degree" (Study in the States). Our reading: an HCI graduate hired for interaction design and research can draw that link directly; one hired mainly for brand illustration will find it harder. An earlier STEM degree (bachelor's or higher, earned within 10 years of the STEM OPT application) can also qualify if it is on the list when you apply, subject to the school-accreditation conditions on that page; our STEM OPT qualifying majors guide walks through the lookup.
Do companies sponsor H-1B for UX designers?
Yes, technology employers do sponsor product and UX designers, but a design role has to clear the H-1B specialty-occupation test, and in our reading that is where design petitions are most likely to draw questions.
USCIS (page updated 09/21/2026) says a specialty occupation requires a bachelor's or higher degree in a "directly related" specific specialty, meaning "there is a logical connection between the required degree, or its equivalent, and the duties of the position" (USCIS H-1B specialty occupations). The position must also meet one of four criteria, such as that degree normally being the minimum requirement for entry into the position.
Why design roles get scrutiny, in our reading: the Bureau of Labor Statistics says "Educational requirements for web developers and digital designers range from a high school diploma to a bachelor's degree" (BLS), and O*NET says of Web and Digital Interface Designers (15-1255.00, sample titles include UX Engineer) that "Most of these occupations require a four-year bachelor's degree, but some do not" (O*NET). A posting that accepts "any degree or equivalent experience" raises the question of whether a specific degree is required at all; a role that genuinely requires a degree in HCI, interaction design or cognitive science, with research and information-architecture duties, answers it more directly. The employer and its attorney decide how to describe the role, and it must match the real job; you can ask how they plan to.
Wage level matters too. Weighted H-1B selection has been in effect since 2026-02-27, entering a Level IV registration four times and a Level I registration once (Federal Register final rule); see how the weighted lottery works. For which employers sponsor designers, see UX designer roles and H-1B sponsorship at enterprise SaaS companies.
If a recruiter raises the $100,000 H-1B payment: as of 2026-11-01 it is not being collected. USCIS says a court "vacated agency guidance implementing the $100,000 payment requirement" and that DHS still plans to collect if the order is lifted (USCIS); the proclamation stays in effect on paper until 2027-09-21. Even if collection resumed, a change of status that USCIS grants inside the US was never covered; a denied one, or a petition for consular processing, would be. When the recruiter asks whether you need sponsorship, answer plainly with your status and end date.

A worked timeline: an HCI graduate interviewing in November
Suppose your MS in HCI (CIP 30.3101) ended in May 2026 and your post-completion OPT started on 2026-08-17 (a hypothetical date). With no employer reported, you have used about 77 unemployment days by 2026-11-01, and day 90 falls around 2026-11-14 (our arithmetic; the count in SEVIS governs). A five-round loop that starts this week could end after that date; our take-home and OPT clock timeline playbook shows how to sequence it.
- Check your unemployment count in the SEVP Portal or with your DSO before scheduling final rounds.
- Ask the recruiter for the full loop schedule on the first call.
- Ask your DSO what counts as qualifying employment if you take part-time or contract design work meanwhile.
- Confirm E-Verify enrollment with the employer's HR before accepting; a later STEM OPT extension and its Form I-983 depend on it.
- Report the new employer through the SEVP Portal once you start, following your school's instructions.
- Ask your DSO about the OPT fee proposal: your approved OPT is not covered, but a STEM OPT recommendation dated 60 or more days after any final rule could be.
Who to ask: your DSO for CIP codes, STEM OPT recommendations and unemployment days; the employer's immigration attorney, through HR, for title, wage level and petition timing; a licensed immigration attorney of your own for status strategy across lottery years.
Common mistakes
- Jumping to screens in minute two. Skipping clarification looks like guessing to the interviewer.
- Blurring logos and calling it anonymized. Real data and layouts can still identify a client.
- Trusting your degree's name. "Design" in a title says nothing about STEM OPT; the CIP code on your I-20 does.
- Accepting a title without asking about sponsorship plans. "Visual Designer, any degree" and "Product Designer, degree in HCI or a related field" are different petitions.
- Letting the unemployment clock run silently. Multi-week loops and take-homes spend days you cannot get back.

Do companies sponsor H-1B for UX designers?
Technology employers do sponsor UX and product designers, but the role must qualify as a specialty occupation, which USCIS says requires a bachelor's or higher degree in a directly related specific specialty. In our reading, design titles invite more questions than engineering titles because BLS and O*NET describe mixed education paths for design work, so the real duties and the degree the job requires matter. As of November 1, 2026 the $100,000 H-1B payment is blocked by court orders and not being collected.
