What to Wear to a US Visa Interview: F-1, H-1B and H-4 Dress Guide (and What Matters More)
No rule says what to wear to a US visa interview. Security lines, outdoor queues and your DS-160 answers shape the day far more than any blazer does.

Part of our guide to the H-4 EAD.
There is no official dress code for a US visa interview. For F-1, H-1B and H-4 applicants alike, what to wear for a visa interview comes down to three things: neat business casual or clean traditional dress, closed shoes you can stand in for an hour, and as little metal as possible for the security line. Religious and cultural dress, including head coverings, is fine as long as your face is visible for identity checks. The officer decides your case on your DS-160, your documents and your answers. A blazer will not rescue an inconsistent application, and a plain sweater or kurta will not hurt a strong one.
Status line, as of November 1, 2026:
- In effect: F, M, J, H-1B, H-4 and L applicants, renewals included, interview in person under the State Department's interview waiver update, effective 2025-10-01. If you used the dropbox last time, you are dressing for a consulate line this time.
- In effect: online-presence review for F, M and J applicants (since June 2025) and H-1B and H-4 applicants (since 2025-12-15). The US Mission in India's visa page tells these applicants to set every social media account to "public" or "open".
- In effect, unchanged: Proclamation 10998 has restricted visas for nationals of 39 countries (19 fully, 20 partially) since 2026-01-01. If your country is on the list, read State's page before you plan anything else about the day.
- Blocked: the Duration of Status final rule, by a federal court since 2026-09-14 (summary judgment briefed; DHS's appeal pending), so F-1 students are still admitted for duration of status. Our D/S appeal tracker follows the case.
This page covers consular visa interviews abroad. For a USCIS office interview, see what to wear to a green card interview.
What to wear for a visa interview: the short answer
Wear what you would wear to an ordinary day at a conservative office: a collared shirt, blouse, sweater or clean traditional outfit, trousers or a knee-length or longer skirt or dress, and comfortable closed shoes. Skip metal-heavy belts and jewelry, slogans, large bags and anything you could not stand in for an hour. No consulate grades your outfit.
Visa interview outfits by applicant, as of 2026-11
| Applicant | Works well | Skip | Why |
|---|---|---|---|
| F-1 student, first visa | Collared shirt or blouse, trousers, a sweater; a kurta, salwar kameez or sari is just as good | A suit bought for the day, slogan tees, ripped jeans | Five written criteria decide it, none of them appearance (9 FAM 402.5-5(C)) |
| F-1 on OPT or STEM OPT, renewing | Your normal work clothes | Anything you would not wear to the office | Expect questions about your job and your plans after OPT |
| H-1B worker | Office business casual | A heavy suit for an outdoor queue | Immigrant intent is not the H-1B test (9 FAM 402.10-10(A)) |
| H-4 spouse | Smart casual or traditional dress | Stacked metal jewelry, a large handbag | The relationship and the principal's status decide it (9 FAM 402.10-14) |
| H-4 or F-2 children | Comfortable layers | Electronic toys and games, snacks | Canada's posts bar food and "Electronic or recording equipment of any kind" |
| Religious or cultural dress | What you normally wear, face visible | Nothing | Religious head coverings are accepted even in the visa photo (9 FAM 303.6-2(A)(1)) |
Is there a dress code for the US visa interview?
No. None of the official pages we read, including the Foreign Affairs Manual (FAM) sections on visa photos, students and H visas and the visitor and visa pages of three US missions, sets a dress code for applicants. Two sets of rules do touch what you wear: the visa photo standards and each post's security screening.
The photo standards are in 9 FAM 303.6. Eyeglasses "must not be worn in a photo provided for a visa application" filed on or after November 1, 2016, apart from rare exceptions such as a medical need backed by a signed medical statement, and hair should be exposed "unless local or religious custom prohibits this." They govern the photo, not your outfit, but the line is the same: your face must be identifiable. Security rules, set post by post, shape your outfit far more.
Can I wear traditional or religious clothing to my visa interview?
Yes. A turban, hijab, kippah, patka, sari, salwar kameez, dashiki, kurta or any other religious or cultural dress is appropriate at the interview, and none of the official pages we read asks you to change it. The State Department's own photo rules even make room for religious head coverings, though not for other hats or coverings: the same section says "Generally, applicants must have their photo taken without head covering of any kind."
The FAM's wording on religious coverings in photos is direct:
"You may accept a photo with a head covering only when the presentation of a photo without head covering would conflict with the applicant's religious practices. A photograph depicting a person wearing a head covering must show enough of the face to establish identity." (9 FAM 303.6-2(A)(1))
The same paragraph rejects a photo with "a traditional facemask or veil, which conceals portions of the face and does not permit adequate identification." Staff need to match your face to your passport and photo, so if you wear a face veil, ask your post's official contact channel how it handles identity checks before the day.
What should women wear to a US visa interview?
The same neat, comfortable standard applies to everyone. A blouse with trousers, a knee-length or longer dress or skirt, a kurta with leggings, or a sari are all appropriate. Choose flats or low heels you can stand in through a long line.
The details that matter are about screening, not style:
- Jewelry and hair accessories. At the US Mission to Canada, every visitor is "subject to inspection via walk-through metal detector and a hand-held metal detector" (security procedures). Stacked bangles, heavy necklaces, metal hair clips and big buckles slow that step, so wear simple earrings and a plain watch. Canada's posts bar "Electronic or recording equipment of any kind," which rules out a smartwatch there.
- Handbags. Canada's posts permit purses "12 x 10 x 6 in. and smaller" and bar backpacks, bags and luggage, with no storage. A small purse, or just your document folder, is safest.
- Makeup and fragrance. The same list bars "Any oils, aerosols or pump sprays, liquids, lotions and powders." Get ready before you leave; do not carry perfume, sunscreen or a powder compact at a post with that rule.
- Medical devices. The US Mission in India requires "a hard-copy original letter from a medical professional" for a medically necessary device, and warns that without it you may be denied entry and rescheduled.
Should I wear a suit to an F-1 visa interview?
You don't need one. There is no F-1 visa interview dress code, so business casual or clean traditional dress is enough. If you already own one and feel natural in it, wear it.
What decides an F-1 case is written down. Under 9 FAM 402.5-5(C), you must show acceptance at a school (your Form I-20), intent to enter solely to pursue a full course of study, "present intent to leave the United States at conclusion of approved activities," sufficient funds and preparation for the course. If you fail any one of them, the refusal ground is INA 214(b). Our guide to common F-1 visa interview questions maps each question to those criteria.
On OPT or STEM OPT and renewing your F-1 visa? Wear your normal work clothes; the outfit is the easy part. Cornell's international office notes that graduates on OPT have "a somewhat higher risk of being denied renewal of your visa stamp," because the F-1 visa still requires intent to return home, so expect questions about your job and your plans after OPT, and answer them truthfully. The trip itself is the bigger decision: Cornell, Johns Hopkins and USC advise against international travel while an OPT application is pending, and Cornell's page adds that if USCIS schedules a biometrics appointment and you miss it while abroad, the case could be delayed or denied (Cornell's guidance). Talk to your DSO about your travel signature and timing before you book.
What is the H-1B visa interview dress code?
There isn't one. Dress the way you would for an ordinary day at your employer; if your team wears hoodies, a collared shirt is already a step up. A suit is optional.
The legal frame is different from F-1. The FAM says "the express text of INA 214(b) indicates that it cannot be applied to H-1B applicants," and that an officer's evaluation "must not focus on the issue of immigrant intent" (9 FAM 402.10-10(A)). Questions tend to center on your approved petition, your role and your employer. Our H-1B stamping interview-day timeline walks through the day from the security line to the window and the three possible outcomes.
H-4 spouses and children
H-4 spouses and children of H-1B workers do not have to show a residence abroad; they qualify "solely based on the legitimacy of the relationship with the principal applicant" (9 FAM 402.10-14(A)). When you are following to join a principal already in the US, the officer must also be satisfied that the principal is maintaining H status (9 FAM 402.10-14(B)). Dress comfortably and bring the relationship and status documents your post lists; our H-4 visa interview questions and documents guide covers the folder. For children, choose layers and check what your post allows before packing: the US Mission to Canada lists "Food and beverages" as prohibited, decides strollers "on a case by case basis," and lets a minor child bring one person to assist.
How should I dress for security screening, weather and the wait?
Assume airport-style screening, no storage and part of the wait outdoors. The US Embassy London asks consular visitors to "arrive 30 minutes in advance of your appointment to allow sufficient time for airport-style security screening" (visitor page).
- No storage, no one to hold things. Canada's posts say to leave prohibited items "at your home, your hotel, or in your vehicle," and drivers, friends and extra relatives "must wait outside." A coat you take off is one more thing to carry all morning.
- Helmets. The same list bars "Helmets of any type," so if you ride a scooter, plan where the helmet goes.
- Weather. Dress for the forecast at your appointment hour, with one layer you can keep on. Check whether umbrellas are allowed; Canada's list "is not all-inclusive."
Rules differ by post, so read your own post's page, not a friend's. Our guide to what to bring to a US visa interview compares phone and bag rules at four posts.
Plan your interview-day outfit, step by step
- Open your appointment confirmation and your embassy or consulate's security page, note the date you read it, and re-check it the week of the interview.
- Check the weather forecast for the consulate's city at your appointment hour and pick one layer you can keep on through screening.
- Choose shoes you have already worn for a full day.
- Remove metal-heavy belts, jewelry and hair clips, empty your pockets of coins, and leave at the hotel anything your post bars (at Canada's posts that includes phones, smartwatches, earbuds and bags larger than a small purse).
- Lay out the outfit the night before, next to the folder holding your passport, DS-160 confirmation page, appointment confirmation and your I-20 or I-797 approval notice.
- Re-read your submitted DS-160 application the same evening; it is what the officer has on screen.
What matters more than what you wear
Common misconception: "Officers judge your clothes, so a suit improves your chances." Correction: none of the State Department guidance we read lists appearance as a factor. What the officer decides is written in the Foreign Affairs Manual, and it starts with the application you already submitted.
What the consular officer is deciding, by visa type (as of 2026-11)
| Visa | The legal question | Where it is written | What actually helps | Clothing |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| F-1 | I-20 acceptance, full course of study, present intent to leave, sufficient funds, preparation | 9 FAM 402.5-5(C) | Clear answers about your program, funding and plans that match your DS-160 and I-20 | Not listed |
| H-1B | Eligibility for H-1B classification; INA 214(b) "cannot be applied" | 9 FAM 402.10-10(A) | Knowing your role, employer and petition details as filed | Not listed |
| H-4 | "Legitimacy of the relationship" and, when following to join, the principal maintaining status | 9 FAM 402.10-14(A)-(B) | Original relationship documents and the principal's status papers | Not listed |
Three checks matter more than any outfit:
- Your answers match your DS-160. Re-read your employer, job title, US address, travel history and prior visas; the officer has the application on screen.
- Your online presence is part of the file. Every DS-160 has asked for social media identifiers since 2019, and the online-presence review now covers F, M, J, H-1B and H-4 applicants, among other classes. Our guide to F-1 social media vetting explains what to list and why deleting accounts can backfire.
- Fix errors before the day. A submitted DS-160 cannot be edited; the usual fix is a new DS-160 with a new confirmation number, explained in our guide to whether you can edit a DS-160 after submitting. If the error touches your I-20 or SEVIS record, talk to your DSO; if it involves a prior refusal or your immigration history, ask a licensed immigration attorney (for H-1B and H-4, often the one who filed the petition). Always answer truthfully.
A worked example: an F-1 interview on December 3, 2026
Say your F-1 interview is at 8:15 a.m. on Thursday, 2026-12-03, at a post where December mornings are cold and the line forms outdoors.
- Monday, 2026-11-30. Re-read your post's security page for bags, phones and umbrellas. Read your DS-160 and I-20 side by side; if the I-20 has an error, email your DSO that day, because only your school can fix it.
- Wednesday, 2026-12-02, evening. Lay out trousers, a collared shirt or kurta, a sweater you can keep on and broken-in shoes, then read your DS-160 once more.
- Thursday, 7:30 a.m. Arrive early, carrying only what your post allows.
- If the officer asks for more. Documents requested under a 221(g) refusal are due within a year or a new fee is needed, and State's administrative processing page says timing "will vary based on the individual circumstances of each case." Keep the program start date on your I-20 in view, and tell your DSO early if a delay could push you past it.
Appointment availability changes monthly; check the live Global Visa Wait Times page rather than anyone's screenshot.
Common mistakes
- Buying a new suit or designer outfit. Nothing in the FAM rewards it.
- Breaking in new shoes, or wearing stacked metal, on interview day. You may stand for a long time, and metal slows the detectors.
- Carrying perfume, lotion, sunscreen, food, a helmet or a backpack to a post that bars them and has no storage.
- Copying a friend's rules from another consulate. Your post's own page governs.
- Wearing eyeglasses in a new visa photo. 9 FAM 303.6 bars them except in rare cases such as a documented medical need.
- Polishing the outfit and not the DS-160. The night before belongs to your application.
- Booking an interview trip while an OPT application is pending without talking to your DSO first.
Frequently asked questions
Is there a dress code for the US visa interview?
No. None of the State Department pages we read for this guide on 2026-11-01 sets a dress code for visa applicants. Neat business casual or clean traditional dress works for F-1, H-1B and H-4 interviews, and the rules that do touch your outfit are each post's security screening and, for the photo, the standards in 9 FAM 303.6.
Can I wear traditional or religious clothing to my visa interview?
Yes. Religious and cultural dress, including turbans, hijabs and other head coverings, is appropriate. The Foreign Affairs Manual accepts a religious head covering even in the visa photo as long as enough of the face shows to establish identity, so expect to show your face for identity checks at the window.
Should I wear a suit to an F-1 visa interview?
A suit is not required. Business casual or clean traditional dress is enough, and wearing one is fine if you already own it and feel natural in it. Under 9 FAM 402.5-5(C) the officer decides on your I-20, study plans, intent to leave after your studies, funding and academic preparation, not on your clothes.
What should women wear to a US visa interview?
The same neat, comfortable standard applies to everyone, so a blouse with trousers, a knee-length or longer dress or skirt, a kurta or a sari all work. Choose flats or low heels, keep jewelry and metal hair accessories minimal for the metal detector, and carry only a small purse, since posts such as the US Mission to Canada bar larger bags and have no storage.
Does clothing affect visa approval?
Not according to any State Department guidance we read. The Foreign Affairs Manual sets out what officers decide for F-1, H-1B and H-4 applicants, and appearance is on none of those lists. What counts is whether your answers and documents match the DS-160 you submitted, so spend the night before re-reading it rather than ironing a second shirt.

How we checked this: on 2026-11-01 we read 9 FAM 303.6, 402.5 and 402.10 on fam.state.gov, the security and visa pages of the US Mission to Canada, US Embassy London and US Mission India, and Cornell's OPT travel page, and checked every quotation against them. Status items (interview waivers, online-presence review, Proclamation 10998, the D/S court order) come from the State Department notices and court docket linked above.
This is general information, not legal or tax advice. Your appointment confirmation, your post's own instructions and your I-20 or approval notice govern; ask your DSO about F-1, OPT and travel signatures, and a licensed immigration attorney about H-1B or H-4 eligibility.
If your stamping trip is tied to a job offer or a start date and you are still searching for an employer that sponsors, F1Jobs works with F-1, OPT and H-1B job seekers on that part of the plan.
