Brand Management and CPG Jobs for International Students: Who Sponsors, Who Doesn't, and the MBA Path
One large CPG employer rules out sponsorship for its whole US early-careers program in writing, and others decide role by role, so here is how to check a brand target before you spend a recruiting season.

Part of our guide to companies that sponsor H-1B visas.
Brand management jobs for international students exist, but sponsorship is harder to get in brand roles than in CPG analytics, supply chain or R&D, and each company decides, sometimes program by program. Mondelez's US early-careers program, for one, says in writing that it pursues only candidates with permanent US work authorization. The legal hurdle is the H-1B "specialty occupation" test, which broad brand jobs pass less easily than technical ones. On F-1, OPT or STEM OPT, check each employer's dated posting language and filing record before you spend a recruiting season on it.
Status as of November 1, 2026: STEM OPT and its 180-day automatic extension are in effect, unchanged by the October 14 EAD rule. OPT unemployment limits are in effect at 90 days (150 on STEM OPT). SEVP's CPT guidance is in effect and challenged, with a hearing on November 6, 2026. The OPT fee is only proposed (the school would pay); comments close November 9, 2026. FY2028 H-1B registration dates are not announced.
Brand management jobs for international students: do CPG companies sponsor?
It depends on the employer, and often on the program. Some consumer packaged goods companies rule out sponsorship in writing; others decide role by role. Brand management is generally harder to sponsor than CPG analytics, supply chain or R&D, because H-1B requires a job that needs a degree in a specific specialty, so check every target employer individually.
What a written "no" looks like
One employer we checked directly: Mondelez's US Early Careers page lists "Brand Management – Marketing (MBA Students)" among its summer internships, and states: "The USA Early Careers Program is only able to pursue candidates with permanent and full time US work authorization." (Page read November 2, 2026.)
That sentence covers every internship on the page, including R&D, packaging and supply chain, so the rule is program-wide. It says nothing about other CPG companies or Mondelez's experienced-hire postings, which we did not check.
Why a company's H-1B totals are not the answer
The USCIS H-1B Employer Data Hub (fiscal year 2009 through fiscal year 2026, quarter 4) can be searched by employer, city, state and industry code, but not by job title. A CPG company with a long approval record may be sponsoring IT, data and R&D staff while its brand team never files. Job titles appear only in DOL's Labor Condition Application (LCA) files, covered in the steps below.
Is brand management a specialty occupation?
It can be, but it is one of the harder cases. Under 8 CFR 214.2(h)(4)(ii), as rewritten by DHS's modernization rule effective January 17, 2025, the job must require a bachelor's degree or higher "in a directly related specific specialty." The regulation lists "business specialties" among qualifying fields, so marketing is not excluded by name. The sentences that matter most for brand roles, from the final rule (89 FR 103054):
"A position is not a specialty occupation if attainment of a general degree, without further specialization, is sufficient to qualify for the position. A position may allow for a range of qualifying degree fields, provided that each of those fields is directly related to the duties of the position."
"Directly related" means "a logical connection between the required degree, or its equivalent, and the duties of the position." Brand roles struggle here. The Bureau of Labor Statistics' Occupational Outlook Handbook (modified August 27, 2026) says advertising, promotions and marketing managers "typically need a bachelor's degree in a business field, such as marketing." A posting that accepts any business degree is exactly where a petition gets tested.
Common misconception: "An MBA is a general business degree, so a brand job can never qualify for H-1B."
Correction: In the 2024 final rule's preamble, DHS said it was "removing the references to 'business administration' and 'liberal arts'" from the general-degree sentence, because "the title of the degree alone is not determinative." Our reading: the duties and what you actually studied matter more than the degree's name, so an MBA title neither sinks a petition nor saves one.
A brand role's case is stronger when its duties need specialized knowledge (pricing analytics, forecasting, consumer-research design), the employer consistently requires defined fields, and your coursework matches. Whether a specific role qualifies is for the employer's immigration attorney to judge.
Which CPG roles sponsor more often?
Roles whose duties map to a specific degree generally make an easier case, and many of their degrees carry STEM CIP codes, which can mean more OPT time and more lottery attempts. We confirmed each code below on the DHS STEM Designated Degree Program List (last updated July 22, 2024).
CPG role families and the visa questions that decide them (as of 2026-11)
| Role family | Common degree paths | Specialty-occupation link | STEM OPT route (codes on the DHS list) | What to verify first |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Brand management (associate or assistant brand manager) | MBA; marketing or business bachelor's | Hardest; duties must tie to defined fields | Only if your program's CIP is STEM, e.g. 52.1301 Management Science | Posting language; LCAs for brand titles |
| Consumer insights and analytics | MS business analytics or statistics; quantitative MBA | Stronger when duties are visibly quantitative | 30.7102 Business Analytics; 52.1302 Business Statistics | E-Verify, if you need STEM OPT |
| Supply chain and demand planning | Industrial engineering, operations research, supply chain | Clearer with an engineering or OR degree | 14.3501 Industrial Engineering; 14.3701 Operations Research (52.0203 supply chain management is not listed) | Whether that team files LCAs |
| R&D, food science, packaging | Food science, chemical engineering, packaging science | Usually the most direct link | 01.1001 Food Science; 14.0701 Chemical Engineering; 15.1503 Packaging Science | Program-wide rules (Mondelez's covers R&D) |
| Sales and customer development | Any business degree | Often hard; broad requirements | Only with a STEM CIP code on your I-20 | Whether the program accepts OPT |
| Finance and FP&A | Finance, accounting | Depends on duties | Only with a code such as 30.7104 Financial Analytics | Wage level on the offer |
If brand management at a target company is closed to you, its insights and supply chain teams may be a more realistic way in; our guide to supply chain analyst roles at big retailers shows how that side works. Agencies are a different employer type, covered in why agency marketing roles rarely sponsor.
Is a marketing degree STEM for OPT?
Not under a marketing code. From the business series (52), the DHS STEM list includes only 52.1301 Management Science, 52.1302 Business Statistics, 52.1304 Actuarial Science and 52.1399 Management Sciences and Quantitative Methods, Other. No marketing code (52.14) and no general business administration code (52.02) is on it.
What counts is the CIP code on your I-20, not the name of your degree. A "STEM-designated MBA" is usually a program that reports one of the qualifying codes, such as 52.1301. If you think your program's code does not match what you studied, our guide to requesting a CIP code review explains how schools handle it.
Even with a qualifying code, STEM OPT in a brand job needs three things:
- An E-Verify employer. Study in the States says "a student must pursue their practical training through an employer that is enrolled in USCIS' E-Verify" (eligibility page).
- A Form I-983 training plan showing "a direct relationship to the student's qualifying STEM degree." A brand job on a management-science MBA needs that link spelled out, so take the draft plan to your DSO before you accept.
- A timely filing. USCIS's STEM OPT page (updated January 30, 2026) still says it "will automatically extend your employment authorization for 180 days" if you file on time and your OPT expires while the case is pending. File after the EAD expires and you get no 180 days.
For regular post-completion OPT, USCIS's OPT page says "All OPT must be directly related to your major area of study," a test brand roles usually fit when the degree is in marketing or business.
Still choosing a program? GMAC's Application Trends Survey 2026 (released October 27, 2026) reports international applications to US business programs down 38%. The visa rules are the same either way, so ask any program for its CIP code and CPG recruiting record.
Can international MBA students get brand management internships?
Yes, where the company's program accepts students who will later need sponsorship and your school can authorize the work. MBA brand internships, like the one Mondelez lists, are a common route into full-time brand roles, so the internship decision is often the sponsorship decision made early.
For summer 2027, authorization is the live question. SEVP's Broadcast Message 2608-01 (August 12, 2026) allows CPT only "if its absence would make the attainment of a degree an impossibility," and several universities have paused some or all new CPT approvals. The guidance is in effect and challenged in AAU v. DHS, with a preliminary-injunction hearing on November 6, 2026, at 3:00 p.m. (docket; check it for the outcome). If your MBA requires an internship, CPT may still be available; if internship credit is optional, ask your DSO now.
The fallback is pre-completion OPT. USCIS lets you work full time on it "when school is not in session," but "all periods of pre-completion OPT will be deducted from the available period of post-completion OPT," so a full-time summer internship uses up roughly its own length of your 12 months. For turning a summer into a sponsored offer, see our guide to internship return offers and sponsorship.
The MBA path, dated: lottery seasons for a May 2027 graduate
Weighted H-1B selection has been in effect since February 27, 2026: a Level IV registration gets four entries and Level I gets one, based on where the offered wage falls among DOL's wage levels for the occupation and location (see our wage-level lottery guide).
The seasons a May 2027 MBA graduate could reach (our arithmetic, assuming March registrations; FY2028 dates are not announced, and USCIS must give at least 30 days' notice):
Registration seasons reachable on OPT, May 2027 graduate (as of 2026-11)
| Registration (expected) | Fiscal year | Non-STEM CIP (12 months OPT) | STEM CIP (12 + 24 months) |
|---|---|---|---|
| March 2027 | FY2028 | Yes, if the employer registers you before you graduate | Yes |
| March 2028 | FY2029 | Yes, the last season before OPT ends in mid-2028 | Yes |
| March 2029 | FY2030 | No | Yes |
| March 2030 | FY2031 | No | Yes, near the end of STEM OPT |
If you are selected and your employer files a timely change-of-status petition, cap-gap extends your F-1 status and OPT work to April 1 of the fiscal year requested (or the petition start date, if earlier); cap-exempt petitions get none. Proclamation 11069 is in effect on paper, but its $100,000 payment is blocked by court orders, and it never covered change-of-status petitions USCIS grants inside the US. For the full post-MBA plan, read our MBA sponsorship strategy guide.
How to check a CPG employer before you apply
- Screenshot the work-authorization line on the company's careers site and on each posting, with the date.
- Search the USCIS H-1B Employer Data Hub for the employer's legal entity name (often different from the brand name), and note initial versus continuing approvals.
- Download the latest LCA disclosure file from DOL's Office of Foreign Labor Certification performance page (FY2026 Q3, through June 30, 2026, as of this writing). Filter by employer, then by titles containing "brand" or SOC codes 11-2021 (Marketing Managers) and 13-1161 (Market Research Analysts and Marketing Specialists). An LCA is a filing, not an approved petition, but it shows the company has filed for that role.
- Confirm E-Verify enrollment with the employer's HR team if you will need STEM OPT, and ask whether they have signed Form I-983 plans before.
- Ask your career center and second-years which CPG recruiters interviewed international students last cycle.
- Raise sponsorship with the recruiter early; an early answer saves both sides a season.
- Book a DSO meeting to confirm your I-20's CIP code, summer 2027 CPT options and OPT window (USCIS accepts the post-completion I-765 from 90 days before to 60 days after program completion).
Common mistakes
- Reading company totals as brand policy. A big approval count can coexist with a brand team that never files, and one company's written "no" is not an industry rule.
- Trusting the program name. "STEM MBA" means nothing until you see a qualifying CIP code on your I-20.
- Taking a brand job on STEM OPT without the paperwork. No E-Verify enrollment, or no I-983 link to your STEM degree, means no STEM OPT in that job.
- Assuming summer 2027 CPT. Several schools have paused it; confirm with your DSO and track the November 6 hearing.
- Spending the 90-day OPT unemployment clock on brand titles only. Insights and supply chain roles at the same companies may offer consumer exposure with a clearer visa path.
Frequently asked questions
Do CPG companies sponsor H-1B for brand managers?
It depends on the employer and often on the program. As of November 2026, Mondelez's US early-careers page lists an MBA brand management internship but says the program pursues only candidates with permanent US work authorization. Check each target's dated posting language and LCA filings for brand titles.
Can international MBA students get brand management internships?
Yes, where the company's program accepts students who will later need sponsorship and your school can authorize the work. For summer 2027, CPT is uncertain because SEVP's August 2026 guidance limits it to degree-required training; a court hearing is set for November 6, 2026. Ask your DSO about CPT or pre-completion OPT.
Is brand management a specialty occupation?
It can be, but it is a harder case than technical CPG roles. Under 8 CFR 214.2(h)(4)(ii), effective January 17, 2025, a position is not a specialty occupation if a general degree without further specialization is enough. The employer's immigration attorney judges each role on its duties and degree requirement.
Is a marketing degree STEM for OPT?
Not under a marketing code. The DHS STEM Designated Degree Program List, last updated July 22, 2024, has no marketing CIP code; its only business-series codes are 52.1301, 52.1302, 52.1304 and 52.1399. The CIP code on your I-20 is what counts, so confirm it with your DSO.
Which CPG roles sponsor more often?
Roles whose duties map to a specific degree, such as R&D, food science, packaging, supply chain and consumer analytics, generally make an easier H-1B case than brand management, and many of their degrees carry STEM CIP codes. Check each employer's filings by job title in DOL's LCA disclosure data.
