AML and KYC Analyst Jobs With Visa Sponsorship: Banks, Fintechs and the Specialty-Occupation Test
Banks do sponsor some AML roles, but the H-1B turns on the job's degree requirement, so a transaction-monitoring analyst and a KYC onboarding analyst at the same bank can get very different answers.

Yes, AML analyst visa sponsorship exists, but it is decided job by job, not bank by bank. As of November 1, 2026, an H-1B needs a specialty occupation: a role that normally requires a bachelor's degree in a specific, directly related field (8 CFR 214.2(h)(4)(ii), in its current form since 2025-01-17). Analytics-heavy anti-money-laundering roles, such as transaction-monitoring tuning, financial-crimes data analysis and AML model validation, tend to meet that test and fit STEM degrees. Many entry-level KYC operations roles accept any bachelor's or experience instead, which makes them weak H-1B cases even at banks that sponsor plenty of other jobs.
Status line, as of 2026-11-01:
- In effect: the revised specialty-occupation definition (since 2025-01-17); wage-weighted H-1B selection (since 2026-02-27); OPT unemployment limits of 90 days, 150 in total with STEM OPT; the STEM OPT 180-day automatic extension.
- Not announced: FY2028 H-1B registration. USCIS must give at least 30 days' notice; March 2027 is an expectation, not a date.
- Proposed, not law: removing deference to prior approvals at extension (RIN 1615-AD26; comments close 2026-11-13); a $103,265 fee for certain cap-subject petitions (comments closed 2026-09-24; no final rule).
- Blocked in practice: the $100,000 payment under Proclamation 11069. USCIS's I-129 page says DHS still plans to collect it if the court order is lifted. Even then, change-of-status petitions USCIS grants inside the US, the usual F-1 to H-1B route, were never covered.
AML analyst visa sponsorship: the short answer
Banks and fintechs do sponsor some AML and KYC employees, but USCIS judges the job, not the industry. A role that requires a specific degree, such as statistics for alert-model tuning, is a credible H-1B case. A role open to "any bachelor's degree or equivalent experience" usually is not, so two postings in one department can carry opposite sponsorship lines.
Is a KYC analyst a specialty occupation under H-1B rules?
Often not, at the entry level. Much KYC onboarding work (collecting documents, screening names, refreshing files) is trained on the job and open to many backgrounds. The 2024 H-1B modernization rule (89 FR 103054) put the limit into the regulation:
"A position is not a specialty occupation if attainment of a general degree, without further specialization, is sufficient to qualify for the position. A position may allow for a range of qualifying degree fields, provided that each of those fields is directly related to the duties of the position."
USCIS's H-1B specialty occupations page (updated 2026-09-21) lists four ways to qualify: a directly related degree is normally the minimum for the occupation; parallel positions at similar organizations normally require it; the employer, or the third party you are staffed to, normally requires it; or the duties are "so specialized, complex, or unique" that they need it. "Directly related" means "a logical connection between the required degree, or its equivalent, and the duties of the position."
The occupation-level test is the hard one for AML. O*NET puts fraud examiners, investigators and analysts (13-2099.04) in Job Zone Four, where "most of these occupations require a four-year bachelor's degree, but some do not." That is not a specific-field requirement, so AML petitions tend to rest on the employer's own requirement or the complexity of the duties (our reading).
Two more details matter:
- The range of degrees has to hang together. "Finance, accounting, economics or a related field" can work for an investigations role if each field connects to the duties. "Any degree" cannot.
- Staffed seats are judged at the client. If you are contracted to fill a position in a third party's own hierarchy (and are "not merely providing services to the third party"), the same rule says "it is the requirements of that third party, and not the petitioner, that are most relevant." A consultant placed in a bank's own KYC team is judged by the bank's requirements; a remediation project a vendor runs as a service may not be. The employer's attorney decides which applies.
Which AML and KYC roles make the strongest H-1B case?
This is our reading of how the test tends to apply, not a USCIS ruling; the employer's attorney builds each petition.
AML and KYC role families and the H-1B test (our reading, as of 2026-11)
| Role family (common titles) | What the work involves | H-1B case (our reading) | STEM OPT fit |
|---|---|---|---|
| KYC / CDD (customer due diligence) onboarding analyst | Document checks, name screening, periodic refresh | Weak when the posting accepts any degree or experience | Hard to tie to a STEM degree without data work |
| EDD (enhanced due diligence) or KYC remediation analyst, often vendor-staffed | High-risk customer research; project file reviews | Weak to moderate; depends on the degree the role (or the client) requires | Depends on duties |
| AML investigator, SAR (suspicious activity report) analyst, sanctions analyst | Alert review, investigations, case narratives | Moderate when a finance, accounting or related degree is required | Possible with a quantitative degree and analytical duties |
| Transaction-monitoring tuning or AML analytics analyst | Threshold tuning, below-the-line testing, SQL and Python on alert data | Stronger: duties need statistics and data skills | Good fit for analytics, statistics, data science |
| Financial-crimes data analyst / FCC (financial crimes compliance) reporting | Datasets, dashboards, typology analysis | Stronger when a quantitative degree is required | Good fit |
| AML model validation / model risk | Testing monitoring and screening models | Strong: a quantitative degree is the norm | Good fit for financial mathematics, statistics, econometrics |
| FCC technology or AML platform engineer | Building screening, monitoring and case-management systems | Strong, judged like software engineering | Good fit for CS and engineering degrees |
Engineering seats in financial-crimes technology behave like the roles in our guide to investment banks that sponsor H-1B for tech and data roles. Privacy and GDPR programs are a different field; see data privacy and compliance careers with visa sponsorship.
Common misconception, then correction. "Any compliance job at a big sponsoring bank is sponsorable." Sponsorship follows the position. The H-1B Employer Data Hub reports decisions by employer, industry code and location, with no job titles, so a large count says nothing about the AML team.
Which degree fits AML and financial-crimes jobs for H-1B?
The best degree is the one the duties use: quantitative and computing degrees for monitoring, modeling and analytics; finance or accounting for investigations when the employer requires it. On F-1, the degree also decides whether you reach STEM OPT, and so how many H-1B lottery seasons your work authorization can span. Eligibility runs on the CIP code on your I-20, not the degree's name. We checked ICE's DHS STEM Designated Degree Program List (last updated July 22, 2024) on 2026-11-02. It covers every program in CIP series 14, 26, 27 and 40 (engineering, biology, mathematics and statistics, physical sciences) plus named codes elsewhere.
Degrees common in AML hiring and the STEM list (checked 2026-11-02)
| Degree field | CIP code | On the STEM list? |
|---|---|---|
| Statistics, General | 27.0501 | Yes (all of series 27) |
| Financial Mathematics | 27.0305 | Yes |
| Financial Analytics | 30.7104 | Yes |
| Data Analytics, General / Business Analytics | 30.7101 / 30.7102 | Yes |
| Data Science, General | 30.7001 | Yes |
| Econometrics and Quantitative Economics | 45.0603 | Yes |
| Management Science / Business Statistics | 52.1301 / 52.1302 | Yes |
| Computer and Information Systems Security/Auditing/Information Assurance | 11.1003 | Yes |
| Cyber/Computer Forensics and Counterterrorism | 43.0403 | Yes |
| Finance (general), Accounting, Economics (general), Business Administration, Criminal Justice | varies | Not on the list we checked |
A finance master's coded as financial mathematics or financial analytics is STEM; one coded as general finance is not. Ask your DSO to confirm the code in SEVIS before you plan around STEM OPT, and, if your latest degree is not STEM, whether an earlier US STEM degree could support the extension (USCIS's STEM OPT page lists the conditions).
Can you work in AML on OPT or STEM OPT?
Yes. On post-completion OPT, the job must relate to your major and be at least 20 hours a week, per Study in the States' F-1 OPT guidance. STEM OPT adds a STEM degree, an E-Verify employer and a training plan tying the work to that degree.
USCIS's STEM OPT page (updated 2026-01-30) says the employer must be enrolled in E-Verify, sign Form I-983, "have and maintain a bona fide employer-employee relationship with the student," and offer an opportunity "commensurate with those of similarly situated U.S. workers." The I-983 must show how the AML work uses your STEM degree, which is hard for a statistics graduate reviewing onboarding files all day; see whether your I-983 matches your real job.
Three clocks to watch, as of 2026-11-01:
- Unemployment: 90 days on post-completion OPT and 150 in total with STEM OPT, counted from your OPT start date for each day without employer information, per the SEVIS unemployment counter.
- Filing window: file the STEM OPT I-765 up to 90 days before your OPT EAD expires, and within 60 days of your DSO's SEVIS recommendation.
- The 180-day extension: a timely STEM OPT filing keeps you working up to 180 days past the old EAD while USCIS decides; the 2026-10-14 EAD rule did not touch it.
E-Verify's authority runs through 2026-12-11 under the continuing resolution (P.L. 119-103) and lapses with it unless Congress passes funding by then. Ask your DSO, not a recruiter, whether a specific AML role relates to your major.
Do banks sponsor H-1B for AML and KYC analysts?
Some do, for some AML titles, and public data lets you check. Aggregator counts of "H-1B jobs at Bank X" mix every role; DOL's Labor Condition Application disclosure files show the job titles and SOC codes an employer actually filed. Entry-level bank seats are also scarcer. Revelio Labs reported on 2026-10-13 that junior roles at US banks were 4.7% below their October 2022 level, and wrote that banks "seem to be restructuring around AI rather than being automated by it."
Wage level matters too. Under weighted selection, in effect since 2026-02-27, a registration counts four times at Level IV and once at Level I, so a Level I onboarding role carries both a weaker specialty-occupation case and the fewest lottery entries. Bank-specific checks are in our Bank of America H-1B sponsorship guide.
How to check an employer's AML filings, step by step
- Download the latest LCA disclosure file (FY2026 Q3, decisions through 2026-06-30) from the DOL OFLC performance data page.
- Filter the employer column by legal entity name (a bank may file under several) and keep certified cases; the file also lists withdrawn and denied ones.
- Search the job-title column for "AML," "anti-money," "KYC," "BSA" (Bank Secrecy Act), "financial crime," "sanctions," "transaction monitoring" and "fraud."
- Cross-check the SOC code. AML work can be coded as fraud examiners, investigators and analysts (O*NET 13-2099.04, whose sample titles include "Financial Crimes Investigator" and "Fraud Analyst"), compliance officers (13-1041), financial risk specialists (13-2054) or data scientists (15-2051).
- Read the wage level and worksite columns to see which teams and cities filed.
- Ask the recruiter whether this requisition is open to sponsorship. Our walkthrough of how to search LCA filings covers the mechanics.
A certified LCA shows the employer planned a filing for that title. It is not an H-1B approval, and the file covers H-1B1 and E-3 cases too.
Do fintech compliance teams sponsor H-1B or STEM OPT?
Some do, mostly for compliance analytics, fraud strategy and engineering roles. Fintech compliance teams are often small and hand high-volume KYC review to vendors, so the sponsorable seats tend to be technical.
For STEM OPT, the employer that signs your I-983 must be enrolled in E-Verify, and on a vendor placement the third-party rule above applies. If the vendor is one of the eight employers suspended from PERM in the action announced on 2026-10-08 (no written notice or end date has been published), that affects green-card labor certification, not H-1B petitions; Mayer Brown notes the action "does not suspend any employer from the H-1B program."
Already on H-1B in a KYC or AML role? The deference proposal (RIN 1615-AD26) would let USCIS re-examine specialty-occupation eligibility at extension; DHS estimates about 6,044 extra RFEs a year across 208,429 affected petitions. It is only a proposal, and current deference applies.
A worked timeline: analytics degree to an H-1B AML role
Suppose you finish an MS in Business Analytics (CIP 30.7102) in May 2026 and your post-completion OPT starts on 2026-06-15.
Worked timeline for one scenario (as of 2026-11)
| Date | What happens | Rule that controls |
|---|---|---|
| 2026-06-15 | OPT starts; the 90-day unemployment clock runs for days without employer information | SEVIS unemployment counter |
| July 2026 | You start as a financial-crimes data analyst tuning alert thresholds | Job relates to your major |
| March 2027 (expected, not announced) | Your employer registers you for the FY2028 H-1B lottery | Weighted selection by wage level |
| 2027-03-16 to 2027-06-14 | STEM OPT filing window (up to 90 days before the EAD ends) | E-Verify employer and Form I-983 |
| After 2027-06-14 | If timely filed, up to 180 days of continued work while USCIS decides | STEM OPT 180-day extension |
| If selected | Change-of-status petition for an October 1, 2027 start; STEM OPT runs past that date here, so cap-gap (to April 1, 2028, or the start date if earlier) matters only if your OPT would end first | Cap-gap rule since 2025-01-17 |
| If not selected | STEM OPT can run to 2029-06-14, leaving room for another registration | 24-month STEM OPT extension |
USCIS policy since 2026-08-05 (PA-2026-05, now challenged in court) lets officers deny without an RFE or NOID if required initial evidence is missing, so the specialty-occupation evidence has to be in the first filing. If an RFE does arrive, our specialty occupation RFE guide explains the arguments.
Common mistakes
- Treating the bank's name as the answer. Two requisitions in one department can carry different sponsorship lines.
- Accepting a KYC operations offer on STEM OPT without checking the I-983. If the duties do not use your STEM degree, the training plan cannot truthfully show the link.
- Assuming CAMS or CFE replaces a degree requirement. A certification helps your candidacy, not the position's specialty-occupation case.
- Ignoring the wage level. A Level I offer gets one lottery entry; Level IV gets four.
- Letting the OPT EAD expire before filing STEM OPT. A STEM I-765 filed after the EAD ends gets no 180-day extension.
Frequently asked questions
Do banks sponsor H-1B for AML analysts?
Some do, but sponsorship is decided role by role, not bank by bank. A bank that sponsors many technology hires may still post KYC operations roles that say no sponsorship. Search the DOL LCA disclosure files by job title and SOC code for AML or financial-crimes filings; the latest file covers decisions through 2026-06-30.
Is a KYC analyst a specialty occupation?
Often not, when the job accepts any bachelor's degree or equivalent experience. Under 8 CFR 214.2(h)(4)(ii), in its current form since 2025-01-17, a position is not a specialty occupation if a general degree without further specialization is enough. KYC roles that require a specific, directly related degree for analytical duties make a stronger case.
Can I work in AML on STEM OPT?
Yes, if your degree's CIP code is on the DHS STEM list, the employer is enrolled in E-Verify, and your Form I-983 ties the AML duties to that degree. As of 2026-11-01 the 180-day automatic extension still applies to timely STEM OPT filings, and STEM OPT allows 150 days of unemployment in total. Confirm the fit with your DSO before you accept.
Which degree fits AML jobs for H-1B?
A degree the duties actually use, such as data analytics, statistics, financial mathematics, econometrics or computer science for monitoring, modeling and analytics work. Finance or accounting can fit investigation roles when the posting requires it. A posting that accepts any degree is the weak point, whatever you hold. For STEM OPT, the CIP code on your I-20 must be on the DHS STEM list.
Do fintech compliance teams sponsor visas?
Some do, usually for compliance analytics, fraud strategy and engineering roles rather than high-volume onboarding review. Smaller fintechs may have no sponsorship budget, and STEM OPT requires an employer enrolled in E-Verify. Check the company's LCA history by title and ask the recruiter early.
