Does Abbott Sponsor H-1B Visas? Medical-Device, Lab and Tech Roles for International Candidates
Abbott entities appear in public H-1B and LCA data, but sponsorship is decided posting by posting, Abbott is cap-subject, and your wage level now shapes your lottery odds.

Does Abbott sponsor H-1B? Yes, in the sense that matters for a first check: Abbott entities appear in public USCIS and Department of Labor H-1B data, mostly for engineering, software, data and scientific roles. But Abbott H1B sponsorship is decided one posting at a time, Abbott is a cap-subject employer (no lottery exemption), and since 2026-02-27 the wage level of your offer changes your lottery odds. This guide covers how that plays out for F-1, OPT, STEM OPT and H-1B candidates in medical devices, diagnostics and tech, and how to check the filing data yourself.
Status line, as of 2026-10-13: wage-weighted H-1B selection is in effect. The $100,000 H-1B fee is extended on paper but blocked by two courts. The $103,265 cap-subject fee is proposed. The OPT fee rule is proposed. The F-1 Duration-of-Status rule is blocked. Details below.
Does Abbott sponsor H-1B? What the public data can and cannot tell you
Abbott Laboratories is headquartered in Abbott Park, Illinois, north of Chicago. Its US operations span medical devices (diabetes care, cardiovascular, electrophysiology, neuromodulation), diagnostics (core laboratory, molecular, rapid and point-of-care testing), nutrition and established pharmaceuticals. Each of those businesses hires people with specialty-occupation degrees, which is the core H-1B requirement.
Three things trip people up when they research Abbott H1B filings.
- Abbott files under more than one legal name. Subsidiaries and acquired businesses can file petitions and Labor Condition Applications (LCAs) under their own entity names. Search only "Abbott Laboratories" and you will undercount. Our USCIS H-1B Employer Data Hub guide walks through searching name variants and reading the approval columns.
- The data lags. The USCIS H-1B Employer Data Hub covers FY2009 through FY2026 Q3 only. Any "FY2026 Q4" ranking you see online is unreliable.
- History is not a promise. A filing record shows the company has immigration infrastructure. It does not show that this hiring manager can sponsor this opening.
We do not quote an Abbott petition count, because a single number hides which entity, year and metric (initial-employment versus total approvals) it describes. Pull it yourself and note what you pulled.
Which Abbott roles fit an H-1B, and which are harder
An H-1B requires a specialty occupation: a job that normally requires at least a bachelor's degree in a specific, related field. Device and diagnostics companies have plenty of those, but not every role qualifies cleanly.
| Role family (as of October 2026) | Typical degree | Visa notes |
|---|---|---|
| R&D engineering (mechanical, electrical, systems, biomedical) | BS/MS in engineering | Strong specialty-occupation fit; electronics engineers (except computer) alone are 7.5% of FY2026 certified LCA positions through Q3 |
| Embedded, firmware and app software (connected devices, mobile apps) | BS/MS in CS, EE, CE | Software developers are 29.1% of FY2026 certified positions through Q3, the largest single occupation |
| Data science, biostatistics, clinical data | MS/PhD in statistics, data science, biostatistics | Good fit; graduate-degree offers can land at higher wage levels |
| Diagnostics R&D scientist (assay development, molecular, immunoassay) | MS/PhD in chemistry, biology, biochemistry | Good fit; the degree-to-duties link is usually direct |
| Quality, regulatory affairs, validation | BS/MS in engineering or life sciences | Workable when the posting requires a specific degree, weaker when it accepts "or equivalent experience" |
| Manufacturing technician, lab technician | Associate degree or certificate | Hard to support as a specialty occupation |
| Sales and field clinical specialist | Varies | Depends on the posting; degree-flexible requirements weaken the specialty-occupation case |

A note on lab roles and credentials
Clinical testing on patient samples in a hospital or reference lab can require a state personnel license in some states. Diagnostics R&D, quality control and assay development inside a manufacturer is product work, and the posting states what it requires.
Abbott OPT and STEM OPT: what to confirm before you accept
Most international candidates join Abbott on OPT first, then try for H-1B. Abbott OPT hiring has a few checks that matter more in a regulated industry.
- Unemployment limits are unchanged: 90 days on post-completion OPT, and 150 days in aggregate once you add the 24-month STEM extension.
- STEM OPT needs E-Verify. The hiring entity must be enrolled, and you and the employer sign a Form I-983 training plan. Because Abbott hires through several entities, confirm the one named on your offer letter. Our STEM OPT E-Verify explainer covers the check.
- Contractors are different. Many device roles are filled through staffing agencies. If an agency places you at an Abbott site, the agency is your employer of record. Its E-Verify enrollment and training plan are what count for STEM OPT, and the agency, not Abbott, decides any H-1B.
- Early-career programs. Abbott runs rotational professional development programs in functions such as engineering and IT. Work-authorization language can differ by program and year, so read each posting.
On the policy front, the OPT fee NPRM ($70,000 before an initial OPT recommendation, $30,000 for each subsequent one) is proposed. It was published 2026-10-08, and comments close 2026-11-09. The school is the legal payer and may pass the cost on, and it would apply only to DSO recommendations dated 60 or more days after a final rule. Today's OPT costs are unchanged. The Duration-of-Status rule was blocked by a federal court on 2026-09-14 (Presidents' Alliance v. DHS). DHS has appealed, but the appeal does not revive the rule, so D/S admission and the 60-day F-1 grace period still apply. Take anything touching your SEVIS record to your DSO, not a recruiter.
How the 2026 Abbott H1B lottery math works
Because Abbott is cap-subject, an OPT hire who has never held H-1B status needs to be selected in the lottery. Two 2026 facts shape the odds.
- Wage-weighted selection is in effect (rule effective 2026-02-27, used for FY2027). A registration at Level IV gets four entries, Level III three, Level II two and Level I one. The level depends on where the offered wage falls against DOL's prevailing-wage levels for the occupation and worksite area, not on your job title. A new-grad bachelor's offer often sits at Level I or II. The weighted selection rule has the mechanism.
- FY2027 is closed. USCIS announced on 2026-07-17 that the cap was reached with no second selection. FY2028 registration dates have not been announced, and March 2027 is an expectation, not a date.
Fee news affects whether an employer sponsors at all, so know the labels.
| Item | Status as of 2026-10-13 | What it means for an Abbott candidate |
|---|---|---|
| $100,000 H-1B fee (Proclamation 11069, extended to 2027-09-21) | Blocked by California v. Mullin and Global Nurse Force v. Trump | Not being collected; USCIS says it still plans to collect if the orders are lifted |
| $103,265 cap-subject H-1B fee | Proposed; comments closed 2026-09-24 | No final rule; it would cover cap-subject petitions, including F-1 change of status |
| EO 14431 (layoffs as an H-1B factor) | In effect as a directive | Agencies "take into account" layoffs; no definitions, no implementing guidance, no automatic denial |
| DOL PERM suspension of 8 named employers | In effect (announced 2026-10-08) | Abbott is not on the list; it covers PERM only, not H-1B |
| Worker 60-day grace period elimination | Proposed; comments close 2026-11-10 | Today's 60-day worker grace period still applies |

Why Illinois matters
Abbott's headquarters makes the Chicago area its densest hiring market, though device and diagnostics teams sit in several states. Our Illinois H-1B jobs guide maps other sponsors in the same commute shed. The worksite area sets the prevailing wage, which feeds into your lottery weight.
Where Abbott fits among healthcare sponsors
Healthcare hiring held up in a weak month. BLS reported on 2026-10-02 that health care added 17,000 jobs in September 2026 while total payrolls rose 29,000. That figure covers care providers, not device manufacturing, but it is the demand Abbott's products serve.
DOL OFLC data for FY2026 through Q3 shows 426,659 LCAs received and 830,710 positions certified. Occupational therapists (5.0%) and physical therapists (4.7%) rank just behind software developers (29.1%) and electronics engineers (7.5%) by share of certified positions. See the DOL LCA statistics. Some university-affiliated hospitals can be cap-exempt; Abbott cannot.
If you are also looking at pharma and biotech outside the lab, our piece on biotech and pharma H-1B sponsorship for non-research roles covers quality, regulatory, supply chain and commercial paths that overlap heavily with device companies.
A step-by-step plan for an Abbott application
- Pull the filing history for every Abbott entity in the Data Hub and the DOL LCA disclosure data. Note the job titles and worksites that show up repeatedly.
- Match your degree to the duties. Favor postings where the requirement names your field. "Bachelor's in mechanical or biomedical engineering" is stronger for H-1B than "any bachelor's."
- Read the work-authorization line on each posting. If it says sponsorship is not available, take it at its word.
- Answer the sponsorship question honestly. On OPT with an H-1B ahead, you will require sponsorship in the future.
- Ask the recruiter early whether the role is approved for sponsorship and which entity would employ you.
- Check E-Verify for the hiring entity if you need STEM OPT, using the E-Verify employer search.
- Understand your likely wage level once you have an offer, so you know how many lottery entries a registration would carry.
- Ask about green-card support separately, because PERM sponsorship is its own decision.
- Take legal questions to the right person. F-1, OPT and SEVIS questions go to your DSO. Petition strategy and your own eligibility go to a licensed immigration attorney.
Travel and stamping if you join Abbott
An approved change of status from F-1 to H-1B inside the US does not put a visa stamp in your passport. If you later travel and need one, these rules apply as of October 2026. Interview waivers ("dropbox") are gone for H-1B, H-4, F-1 and J-1 applicants. Since 2025-09-06, you apply in your country of nationality or legal residence, so third-country stamping is not an option. Domestic H-1B renewal is not back. The Proclamation 10998 travel ban on 39 countries remains in effect, unchanged since 2026-01-01. Do not travel while an OPT or STEM OPT I-765 is pending, and talk to your DSO before any trip on OPT. Check the live travel.state.gov wait times page rather than trusting a number in a forum.
Common mistakes
- Searching only "Abbott Laboratories" in the Data Hub. You will miss filings under other entity names and underestimate how often the company files.
- Treating Abbott like a cap-exempt employer. It is for-profit and cap-subject. The exemption covers institutions of higher education, their related or affiliated nonprofits, and nonprofit or government research organizations.
- Assuming a staffing agency's offer is an Abbott offer. If an agency employs you, the agency decides on sponsorship.
- Applying to technician roles and expecting an H-1B. Associate-level roles rarely meet the specialty-occupation standard.
- Repeating fee rumors to a recruiter. The $100,000 fee is blocked and the $103,265 fee is proposed.
- Confusing the two grace periods. The F-1 60-day grace period is intact. The proposal to eliminate a 60-day grace period targets H-1B and other workers, and it is still only a proposal.
Frequently asked questions
Does Abbott sponsor H-1B visas?
Abbott entities appear in public USCIS and DOL H-1B data for roles such as engineering, software, data and science. Sponsorship is still decided role by role, and a posting can say that sponsorship is not available for that opening. Read each posting and confirm with the recruiter before a long interview loop.
Is Abbott a cap-exempt H-1B employer?
No. Abbott is a for-profit company, so a first H-1B for someone never counted against the cap goes through the annual lottery. If you already hold cap-subject H-1B status with another employer, a move to Abbott is normally a change of employer petition rather than a new lottery entry.
Can I work at Abbott on OPT or STEM OPT?
Many Abbott engineering and science roles fit STEM degrees. Post-completion OPT allows 90 days of unemployment and the 24-month STEM extension raises the aggregate limit to 150 days. STEM OPT also needs an E-Verify employer and a signed Form I-983, so confirm the entity on your offer and ask your DSO about your own record.
How do I check how many H-1Bs Abbott files?
Search the USCIS H-1B Employer Data Hub and DOL LCA disclosure data for every Abbott entity name, not only Abbott Laboratories. The Data Hub covers FY2009 through FY2026 Q3 only, so treat any FY2026 Q4 ranking you see online as unreliable.
Is Abbott affected by the October 2026 PERM suspension?
Abbott is not one of the eight employers named on 2026-10-08, which were Microsoft, Adobe, Cognizant, Infosys, TCS, Wipro, HCL and Capgemini. That suspension covers PERM labor certification only and does not touch H-1B petitions or status. Ask any employer directly whether it supports PERM for your role.
Abbott is a realistic target if your degree matches the duties. If you want help building a target list of device, diagnostics and healthcare-tech sponsors, F1Jobs can work through it with you.
