Does BlackRock Sponsor H-1B Visas? Technology, Analyst and Investment Roles for OPT Candidates

BlackRock sponsors H-1B workers, but whether your offer gets a petition depends on the hiring entity, the role and how much OPT time your degree gives you.

Part of our guide to companies that sponsor H-1B visas.

Yes, BlackRock sponsors H-1B visas. Its main US filer, BlackRock Financial Management Inc, received 90 initial (new-employment) H-1B approvals and 188 continuing approvals in FY2024, against 2 initial denials and no continuing denials, according to the USCIS H-1B Employer Data Hub. Whether your offer gets a petition depends on three things: which BlackRock entity hires you, whether the role qualifies, and how many H-1B lottery seasons your OPT or STEM OPT actually covers.

Status line, as of 2026-11-01: wage-weighted H-1B selection is in effect (since 2026-02-27). FY2028 registration is not announced; USCIS must give at least 30 days' notice, so a March 2027 window is an expectation only. Proclamation 11069 is in effect on paper, but its $100,000 payment is blocked: courts vacated the agency policies that implement it, and it is not being collected. DHS's OPT-fee rule is proposed, with comments closing 2026-11-09.

Does BlackRock sponsor H-1B? The short answer

BlackRock sponsors H-1B workers through BlackRock Financial Management Inc, which USCIS data shows with 90 new-employment approvals and 188 continuing approvals in FY2024, against 2 denials, a 99.3% approval rate. BlackRock publishes no firm-wide sponsorship policy, so confirm sponsorship for your exact position, entity and degree before relying on it.

The record shows the machinery exists. It cannot tell you which desks sponsor, how many candidates were turned away at the offer stage, or whether you will win the lottery.

Three things to take from the table:

If you were already counted against the H-1B cap, a move to BlackRock generally runs as a change-of-employer petition with no new lottery and lands in the continuing count. Time only in cap-exempt H-1B status, at a university for example, generally does not spare you the lottery; confirm your history with an immigration attorney.

Which BlackRock entity files H-1B?

Employers file under legal-entity names, not brand names. In the Data Hub extract our site uses, BlackRock Financial Management Inc is the main filer, listed with a Princeton, New Jersey address. Smaller numbers appear under BlackRock Corporation US Inc and BlackRock Investment Management LLC, also listed in Princeton. For the state's other sponsors, see our guide to New Jersey's pharma, finance and tech H-1B employers.

Search the Hub for "BlackRock" and read every row; one name undercounts. The entity that files for you is the petitioner on Form I-129 and your I-797 approval notice. Ask HR which one it will be, because the Labor Condition Application, the offered wage and, for STEM OPT, the E-Verify company ID on your training plan all attach to that employer.

Technology vs investment roles: why your degree decides your runway

Your degree, more than your desk, decides how long F-1 work authorization lasts while you wait for the lottery. BlackRock's 2027 Summer Internship Program posting for the Americas, which we read on 2026-11-01, lists business areas including Client & Product Functions, Corporate & Strategic Functions, Investments, Operations, Technology, and Analytics & Risk. STEM OPT eligibility follows the CIP code of your degree, not your job title, so a computer science graduate in technology and an economics graduate in investments can sit on the same floor with a two-year difference in runway.

Typical F-1 work runway by BlackRock role family (as of 2026-11)

Role familyDegrees candidates commonly holdSTEM OPT extension?F-1 work runway after graduation
Technology (software engineering, platform and data roles)Computer science, software engineering, data science, mathematicsUsually, if the degree's CIP code is on the DHS STEM listUp to 36 months (12 OPT + 24 STEM OPT)
Analytics & Risk, Analytics & ModelingMathematics, statistics, financial engineering, quantitative financeOften, depending on the program's CIP code12 or 36 months
InvestmentsFinance, economics, business, sometimes mathematicsDepends on the program; many finance and economics degrees are not STEM-designated, some areOften 12 months
Client & Product, Corporate & Strategic, OperationsBusiness, economics, liberal artsUsually not12 months

Check the CIP code on your own I-20, not the name of your major; our guide to the STEM OPT qualifying majors and CIP code list shows how.

What STEM OPT requires from BlackRock

If your degree qualifies, the employer has to qualify too. USCIS's STEM OPT extension page (updated 2026-01-30) lists what the employer must do, starting with: "Be enrolled in E-Verify, as evidenced by either a valid E-Verify company identification number" or a client company number when an agent runs its cases. The employer must also implement "a formal training program to build on the student's academic learning," documented on Form I-983, so a STEM graduate placed in a non-technical function should raise the degree link early.

The STEM OPT 180-day automatic extension for timely filers is in effect, untouched by the 2026-10-14 EAD rule, and OPT unemployment limits are unchanged at 90 days (150 in aggregate with STEM OPT). One change is only proposed: DHS's OPT fees NPRM would make the SEVP-certified school, not the student, the payer of $70,000 before an initial OPT recommendation and $30,000 before each later one, including STEM OPT; schools could pass the cost on. It would reach only DSO recommendations dated 60 or more days after a final rule, and comments close 2026-11-09.

For the wider landscape, our guide to quant and financial-analyst H-1B sponsorship covers hedge funds, trading firms and asset managers, and our breakdown of how investment banks sponsor engineers and data roles shows the same technology-first pattern at banks.

What 12 months of OPT means for a non-STEM analyst

A non-STEM analyst on post-completion OPT usually gets one or two H-1B registration seasons before F-1 work authorization runs out; a STEM graduate usually gets three or four. That is the calendar, not BlackRock's policy. Take two hypothetical May 2027 graduates who join BlackRock's Analyst Program in July 2027. Candidate A holds an economics BA that is not STEM-designated and joins Investments. Candidate B holds an MS in computer science and joins Technology. Both start OPT on 2027-07-01, so OPT runs to 2028-06-30, and Candidate B's STEM OPT would run to 2030-06-30.

Worked timeline, our arithmetic (as of 2026-11; assumes USCIS keeps a March registration window, which it has not announced)

Registration season (expected)Cap yearCandidate A: 12-month OPTCandidate B: OPT + STEM OPT
March 2027FY2028Only if BlackRock registers you before your start dateSame
March 2028FY2029Last chance on F-1. OPT ends 2028-06-30, so a petition filed while OPT is valid needs cap-gap to bridge to 2028-10-01Covered by OPT
March 2029FY2030No F-1 work authorization leftCovered by STEM OPT
March 2030FY2031Not applicableSTEM OPT ends 2030-06-30; cap-gap would bridge to 2030-10-01

Candidate A gets at most two draws, and only one if BlackRock does not register incoming analysts before their start date. Candidate B gets up to four, or three without that early registration.

Cap-gap makes each candidate's last season work. Under the USCIS cap-gap rules in effect since 2025-01-17, a timely filed cap-subject change-of-status petition extends F-1 status and OPT work authorization to April 1 of the fiscal year requested, or to the petition's start date if earlier. It ends automatically if the petition is denied, withdrawn, revoked or rejected. Cap-exempt petitions get no cap-gap; BlackRock is a for-profit firm, so a first H-1B there is cap-subject and goes through the lottery.

If you are Candidate A, ask the recruiter whether BlackRock registers incoming analysts in the March before they start, ask your DSO how your requested OPT start date moves your end date, and take other visa categories to a licensed immigration attorney.

How wage-weighted selection affects a BlackRock registration

Since 2026-02-27, the lottery weights each registration by the offered wage level under the weighted selection final rule: a Level IV registration is entered four times, a Level I registration once. The level is the highest DOL wage level (from OEWS data) that the offered wage meets or exceeds for that occupation and worksite.

A technology offer and an entry-level investment offer in the same building can therefore carry different odds; ask which level your offer maps to. Our explainer on how the wage-weighted lottery changes your odds by level walks through the math. USCIS's H-1B electronic registration page still shows the FY2027 season; the FY2028 dates are not announced.

On the $100,000 payment: per USCIS's H-1B guidance (2026-09-21), a change of status from F-1 to H-1B granted inside the US was never covered, though a consular-notification petition or a denied change of status would be if collection resumed. USCIS's Form I-129 page says a court vacated the agency guidance, adding: "If this order is later lifted, DHS still plans to collect the payment." A separate $103,265 fee for certain cap-subject petitions (RIN 1615-AD20) is still proposed; comments closed 2026-09-24.

Does BlackRock sponsor green cards?

Our H-1B data cannot answer this, but you can check. PERM labor certification is the first step in most employment-based green cards, and DOL publishes disclosure files on its OFLC performance data page. The latest public PERM file is FY2026 Q3, through 2026-06-30. Filter the employer name for every BlackRock entity and look at job titles and case status. Our PERM lookup guide shows the method.

Three dated facts frame the answer as of 2026-11-01:

Ask at the offer stage whether your role family usually gets PERM sponsorship; timing for any one employee is a question for the employer's immigration counsel.

Is BlackRock's analyst program open to international students?

BlackRock does not publish a sponsorship policy for its student programs. Its Students and Graduates page links regional pages and its Full-Time Analyst Program but says nothing about visa sponsorship. The 2027 Summer Internship Program posting for the Americas, which we read on 2026-11-01, describes a nine-week internship from June through August for "undergraduate or master's students graduating between September 2027 and July 2028," and is silent on work authorization.

For international master's students, the closer fit is often BlackRock's 2027 Quantitative Masters Internship Program, posted for New York, San Francisco, Atlanta and Chicago. The New York Technology (Analytics & Modeling) posting we read on 2026-11-02 asks for students in "analytics, computational finance, financial engineering, mathematics and/or a quantitative-disciplined master's program" graduating in the same window, shows an application end date of 2026-11-13, and also says nothing about sponsorship. Degrees like these are often STEM-designated, but only your I-20's CIP code settles it. Third-party directories that label BlackRock programs closed to international students are not BlackRock sources; rely on the application's work-authorization questions and the campus recruiter.

A summer 2027 internship on F-1 usually runs on CPT, which your school authorizes. SEVP's August 2026 CPT guidance (BCM 2608-01) is in effect and challenged. It allows CPT only "if its absence would make the attainment of a degree an impossibility." The government filed its opposition on 2026-10-28, and the preliminary-injunction hearing is set for 2026-11-06 at 3:00 p.m. in AAU v. DHS (check the docket for the outcome after 2026-11-06). Several schools have paused some CPT approvals, so ask your DSO about your school's position before you accept.

For context on junior finance hiring, Revelio Labs reported in October 2026 that junior headcount at US banks is 4.7% below its October 2022 level. That covers banks, not asset managers, and its authors read it as banks restructuring around AI rather than being automated by it, so it is background, not a measure of BlackRock's hiring.

How to check BlackRock sponsorship for your specific role

  1. Search the USCIS H-1B Employer Data Hub for "BlackRock" and note each entity's initial approvals by fiscal year.
  2. Download the FY2026 Q3 LCA disclosure file from DOL's OFLC performance data page and filter for BlackRock to see job titles, worksites and wage levels near your role.
  3. Compare the CIP code on your Form I-20 with the DHS STEM Designated Degree Program List.
  4. Ask the campus recruiter in writing whether the role is open to candidates who will need H-1B sponsorship, and which entity would employ you.
  5. Confirm with HR, before you sign, the E-Verify company ID and Form I-983 process if you will need STEM OPT.
  6. Bring OPT dates and SEVIS questions to your DSO, and petition strategy to a licensed immigration attorney, often the employer's counsel.

Frequently asked questions

Does BlackRock sponsor H-1B for analysts?

Yes, mainly through BlackRock Financial Management Inc: 90 initial (new-employment) and 188 continuing H-1B approvals in FY2024, per USCIS. The Data Hub has no job titles, so check DOL's LCA disclosure files for BlackRock analyst titles and ask the recruiter in writing (as of November 2026).

Does BlackRock hire international students?

BlackRock's student-careers pages (read November 2026) state no sponsorship policy either way. Its 2027 Americas Summer Internship posting and the 2027 Quantitative Masters Internship posting we read, both for students graduating September 2027 to July 2028, are silent on work authorization. Ask the campus recruiter.

Does BlackRock sponsor green cards?

Our H-1B data does not cover green cards. Search DOL's PERM disclosure files (latest public file FY2026 Q3, through 2026-06-30) for every BlackRock entity name. BlackRock is not one of the eight employers whose PERM filings DOL announced suspending on 2026-10-08.

Is BlackRock's analyst program open to OPT students?

The postings do not say, so confirm it with the recruiter. A non-STEM degree gives 12 months of OPT, usually one or two H-1B registration seasons; a STEM-designated degree can add 24 months of STEM OPT if the employer meets the E-Verify and Form I-983 requirements.

Which BlackRock entity files H-1B?

BlackRock Financial Management Inc, listed in Princeton, New Jersey, is the main filer in the Data Hub extract our site uses; BlackRock Corporation US Inc and BlackRock Investment Management LLC file smaller numbers. Ask HR which entity would be the petitioner on your Form I-129.
