Does Ford Sponsor H-1B Visas? Dearborn Engineering, Software and the OPT-to-H-1B Path
Ninety percent of Ford's FY2024 H-1B approvals were continuing cases, yet several current engineering postings say sponsorship is available. Here is how to tell which ones.

Part of our guide to companies that sponsor H-1B visas.
Does Ford sponsor H-1B? Yes, but most of its filings keep people who already hold H-1B status, and it decides sponsorship one posting at a time. In FY2024 the USCIS H-1B Employer Data Hub recorded 66 initial-employment approvals and 607 continuing approvals for Ford Motor Company, with two denials. Of 17 US postings we read on Ford's careers site in early November 2026, 5 said visa sponsorship was available, mostly vehicle and manufacturing engineering roles, 11 said it was not, and 1 was silent.
Where the rules stand (as of 2026-11-01):
- Wage-weighted H-1B selection: in effect since 2026-02-27. FY2028 registration: not announced; USCIS must announce it at least 30 days ahead (8 CFR 214.2(h)(8)(iii)(A)(3)), so watch its registration page.
- STEM OPT 180-day automatic extension: in effect for timely filers, per USCIS's STEM OPT page; the 2026-10-14 rule ending other automatic EAD extensions did not change it.
- $100,000 H-1B payment (Proclamation 11069): the proclamation is in effect on paper, but the fee is blocked and not collected; the USCIS I-129 page says a court "vacated agency guidance implementing the $100,000 payment requirement." Per USCIS's H-1B page, it never applied to a change of status granted inside the US, the usual OPT-to-H-1B route; a denied one would be covered if collection resumed.
- EO 14431 (layoffs as an H-1B factor): in effect as a directive since 2026-09-18, with no automatic denial and no DOL or USCIS implementing guidance as of 2026-11-01.
- Worker 60-day grace period: in effect; eliminating it is only proposed by DHS (RIN 1615-AD22), with comments closing 2026-11-10. Check the Federal Register for any final rule after that date.
Does Ford sponsor H-1B? The short answer
Ford Motor Company files H-1B petitions every year, but in FY2024 about 90% of its approvals were continuing employment, mostly for people already in H-1B status, and only 66 were initial employment. Its US postings say "available" or "not available" role by role, and in our November 2026 sample the roles open to sponsorship were mostly vehicle and manufacturing engineering, not software.
Ford's H-1B numbers in the USCIS data
USCIS H-1B Employer Data Hub, FY2024 first decisions, from the extract behind our company pages (as of 2026-11)
| Ford Motor Company, FY2024 | Count |
|---|---|
| Initial-employment approvals | 66 |
| Initial-employment denials | 1 |
| Continuing approvals | 607 |
| Continuing denials | 1 |
| Total decisions | 675 |
| Approval rate (our arithmetic) | 99.7% |
| Continuing share of approvals (our arithmetic) | about 90% |
Three things about how the Hub counts change how you read this. First, its glossary page says "The approval and denial data in the data hub reflects USCIS' first decision," and each figure "represents counts of workers approved" (or denied), not petitions. Second, petitions with "New employment" selected on Part 2, Question 2 of Form I-129 are the bucket an F-1 graduate moving from OPT to a first H-1B usually lands in; extensions and other petitions for people already in H-1B status fall on the continuing side (our reading of the Hub's categories). Third, the city is the petitioner's mailing address, which the glossary says "is not necessarily the beneficiary(ies) work location." Ford shows as Dearborn, Michigan, but its filings can cover worksites elsewhere.
Our Ford Motor Company employer page shows the same Hub figures by year, and the live Hub now lists data through FY2026 Q4 if you want newer years.
One name trap: Henry Ford Health, the Detroit hospital system, is a different employer, so any Hub record under its name is not Ford's.
What Ford's job postings say about sponsorship (as of November 2026)
We read 17 US postings on careers.ford.com in early November 2026, all posted between 2026-10-20 and 2026-10-30. It is a small sample of a list that changes daily, but 16 of the 17 stated a sponsorship answer in one plain line.
Ford US postings we read in early November 2026 (as of 2026-11)
| Role (as titled) | Location | Experience asked | Sponsorship line |
|---|---|---|---|
| AI Engineer | Dearborn, MI | 3+ years | Provided |
| Laser Welding Engineer | Dearborn, MI | 4+ years | Available |
| Manufacturing Engineer (powertrain) | Dearborn, MI | Manufacturing engineering experience | Available |
| ADAS Design and Release Engineer | Dearborn, MI | 1+ years | Available |
| Associate Chassis Engineer | Long Beach, CA | 1 year | Available |
| Software Engineer | Dearborn, MI | 5+ years | Not available |
| E-Commerce Software Engineer | Dearborn, MI | 5+ years | Not available |
| AI-First Backend Developer | Dearborn, MI | 6+ years | Not available |
| Senior Software Engineer | United States | 3+ years | Not provided |
| Software and Embedded Engineering, Early Career Program (Advanced EV) | Palo Alto or Long Beach, CA, or Dearborn, MI | Current student | Not available |
| HV Battery NVH/Durability CAE Engineer | Dearborn, MI | 4+ years | Not available |
| Controls Implementation Engineer | Dearborn, MI | 5 years preferred | Not available |
| Model-Based Systems Engineer | Dearborn, MI | 3+ years | Not available |
| Cyber Defense Analyst | Dearborn, MI | 2+ years | Not available |
| Data Scientist | Louisville, KY | Degree or 5+ years | Not available |
| Cash Management Analyst, Ford Credit Bank | Salt Lake City, UT | Bachelor's degree | Not available |
| ADAS FuSA Software Developer | Dearborn, MI | Degree plus 6 years | No line |
The yes version is blunt. The AI Engineer posting reads: "Visa Sponsorship IS provided for this specific role." The no version is just as plain: "Visa sponsorship is not available for this position." Every posting we read also says candidates "must be legally authorized to work in the United States."
What the pattern tells you (our reading of a small sample):
- Engineering opens more doors than software. Four of seven vehicle and manufacturing engineering titles said sponsorship was available. Five of six software-titled roles said no, and the sixth was silent. That matches the wider market: Indeed's October 2026 labor market snapshot put engineering postings at about 145 on its index (February 1, 2020 = 100) in data through 2026-10-16, against about 78-79 for software development, the lowest of the five sectors it charted.
- Early-career roles are not automatically closed. The student program said no, but the Associate Chassis Engineer and ADAS Design and Release roles, asking for one year of experience, said yes.
- In our sample, Ford's line never mentions OPT, STEM OPT or CPT. General Motors' standard line names all three, as our General Motors sponsorship guide shows. Ford's leaves open whether a no-sponsorship role would sign a STEM OPT training plan later. Ask.
- A silent posting is a question, not an answer. The silent one asked for a degree "or foreign equivalent" plus "6 years of progressive, post-baccalaureate experience in the job offered or a related occupation," wording often seen in green-card recruitment ads (our reading; Ford does not label it).
Does Ford hire OPT students?
Yes, in the sense that OPT is work authorization and Ford's postings ask that you be legally authorized to work at hire. The harder question is the future: staying past your first OPT year usually means Ford signing a Form I-983 for STEM OPT and registering you for the H-1B lottery. Ask the recruiter one plain question, "Is this requisition open to candidates who will need STEM OPT support and H-1B sponsorship later?", and keep the answer in writing.
Watch your clock while you wait: post-completion OPT allows 90 days of unemployment and STEM OPT 150 days in total, per the SEVIS Help Hub, and your DSO can tell you how yours are counted.
Does Ford sponsor H-1B for new grads?
Sometimes. Sixty-six FY2024 initial-employment approvals show Ford brings some people into H-1B status for the first time, and two sponsorship-open roles in our sample asked for only one year of experience. But with about 90% of approvals going to continuing cases, Ford looks more often like a second employer for international graduates than a first one (our reading). For the industry picture, see our automotive and EV industry H-1B sponsorship guide; if you are a mechanical engineer, our guide to mechanical engineering jobs at EV battery startups covers battery and EV employers that also hire on OPT and H-1B.
How the weighted H-1B lottery treats a Ford offer
The weighted selection final rule, in effect since 2026-02-27, enters each registration by the prevailing-wage level the offered wage meets: Level IV four times, down to Level I once. Ford is a cap-subject private employer, so a first H-1B with Ford goes through that lottery.
Many Ford postings we read print an internal salary grade (the AI Engineer role lists "GSR7-8"; the early-career program says "salary grade 4"). That is not the DOL wage level on an LCA, which depends on the occupation code and the worksite's area, so the same grade could sit at different levels in Dearborn and Palo Alto (our reading). Our explainer on how wage level changes your lottery odds shows where the level comes from and when it is set.
Worked example: a mechanical engineering graduate on OPT
You finished an MS in mechanical engineering in December 2025. Your OPT EAD runs 2026-01-20 to 2027-01-19 (dates for illustration), and you have about ten months of chassis work at a supplier.
Your path into Ford, step by step (rules as of 2026-11)
| Date | What happens | What governs it |
|---|---|---|
| 2026-11-01 | You find a Ford engineering posting whose line says sponsorship is available | The posting's own sponsorship line |
| November 2026 | You ask the recruiter, in writing, whether that covers STEM OPT and an H-1B registration | The recruiter's answer, not the career-site FAQ |
| Offer and start | Ford becomes your OPT employer; you report it as your school instructs | Your DSO and the SEVP portal |
| After you start, before 2027-01-19 | Your DSO enters the STEM OPT recommendation, and the I-765 goes in with Ford's signed I-983 | Filing window: up to 90 days before the EAD ends and within 60 days of the DSO's recommendation. A timely filing keeps the 180-day automatic extension, in effect; Ford must be enrolled in E-Verify |
| FY2028 cap season (date not announced) | Ford decides whether to register you | 30 days' notice required; weighted selection applies |
| If selected | Ford files an I-129 with a change of status, usually for an October 1 start | Your STEM OPT runs to 2029-01-19, so you would not need cap-gap |
| If not selected | You stay on STEM OPT and can be registered again the next season | The same rules, unless a final rule changes them |
Cap-gap is the backstop for graduates whose OPT ends sooner: for a timely, cap-subject change-of-status petition, it extends F-1 status and OPT work to April 1 of the fiscal year requested, or the petition start date if earlier, per USCIS's cap-gap page.
Common misconception: "Ford approves 99.7% of its H-1Bs, so any Ford job leads to an H-1B."
Correction: That rate covers petitions Ford chose to file, mostly for people already on H-1B. Most postings we read said sponsorship was not available. The posting line, confirmed by the recruiter, is what tells you whether Ford will file for you.
Is Ford Motor Credit a separate H-1B sponsor?
Yes. The Hub lists each petitioner by the employer name and tax ID on its Form I-129 (it shows the last four digits of the tax ID), so Ford Motor Credit files under its own name and is not counted in Ford Motor Company's figures. Search the Hub for "FORD MOTOR CREDIT" and read its initial and continuing columns on their own. Ford Credit roles are listed on the same careers site; the one we read, a Cash Management Analyst role at Ford Credit Bank in Salt Lake City posted 2026-10-30, said visa sponsorship is not available.
The same logic applies if a staffing or IT services firm places you on a Ford project: that firm is your H-1B employer and files its own LCA and petition. That is not Ford sponsorship.
Does Ford sponsor green cards?
Ford's postings are silent on green cards, so check the government record. Search the PERM disclosure file on DOL's OFLC performance data page (latest public file FY2026 Q3, through 2026-06-30) for "Ford Motor," and separately for Ford Motor Credit. Our guide to checking whether a company sponsors green cards explains how to read the result.
Ford is not one of the eight employers (Microsoft, Adobe, Cognizant, Infosys, TCS, Wipro, HCL and Capgemini) in the PERM suspension DOL announced on 2026-10-08, and that action "does not suspend any employer from the H-1B program," according to Mayer Brown. If Ford files for you, expect a long wait: DOL's FLAG processing times page showed PERM analyst review at January 2026 priority dates as of 2026-10-21, with an average of 303 days in its August 2026 row; check the live page for today's figure.
The November 2026 Visa Bulletin (the December bulletin is not out) shows how long the line is after PERM. USCIS requires the Dates for Filing chart for November employment-based I-485s, per its filing charts page: EB-2 India 2015-01-15, EB-3 India 2015-01-15, EB-2 rest of world 2026-03-15. Final Action Dates, which consular cases always use, are EB-2 India 2013-11-01, EB-3 India 2014-01-22 and EB-2 rest of world 2025-04-01.
Will Ford layoffs affect my H-1B?
Not automatically. Ford's Form 10-Q for the quarter ended 2026-09-30, filed 2026-10-29, describes the activity behind its separation accruals (Note 14) as "primarily hourly and salaried worker separation programs in Europe, which are expected to be substantially complete by the end of 2027," and adds that Ford "may take additional restructuring actions where a path to sustained profitability is not feasible." The filing gives no US headcount figure, and we cite no layoff count for Ford.
Executive Order 14431, signed 2026-09-18, makes an employer's layoffs a factor agencies may weigh in H-1B administration. It creates no automatic denial, and as of 2026-11-01 neither DOL nor USCIS had published implementing guidance. Our EO 14431 explainer tracks what has and has not happened.
If your own Ford job ends, the rules depend on your status:
- H-1B: the discretionary 60-day grace period still applies. DHS's proposal to eliminate it is only proposed; comments close 2026-11-10, and nothing changes unless a final rule is published. The proposal would leave only the 10-day window after a petition's validity end date, which runs from that end date, not from a layoff.
- OPT or STEM OPT: the 90-day or 150-day unemployment limit applies, not the H-1B grace period.
Talk to a licensed immigration attorney about options in your H-1B case, and to your DSO about OPT or STEM OPT.
How to check Ford's sponsorship record yourself
- Open the USCIS H-1B Employer Data Hub, choose fiscal year 2024, and search "FORD MOTOR COMPANY"; then search "FORD MOTOR CREDIT" separately.
- Read the initial and continuing columns apart; initial approvals are the closer proxy for first-time H-1B hires.
- Download the LCA and PERM disclosure files from DOL's OFLC performance data page and filter the same employer names for job titles, worksites, wage levels and green-card filings.
- Read the sponsorship line on every posting at careers.ford.com before you apply, and note the date you read it.
- Ask the recruiter whether the role covers STEM OPT support and an H-1B registration, and keep the answer in writing.
- Confirm any STEM OPT employer is enrolled in E-Verify, as USCIS's STEM OPT page requires.
- Take OPT, STEM OPT and SEVIS questions to your DSO, and petition or green-card strategy to a licensed immigration attorney.
Common mistakes
- Applying past a "not available" line in the hope that Ford will change its mind after an offer.
- Assuming "available" covers STEM OPT. Ford's line talks about visa sponsorship; confirm the I-983 separately.
- Searching only "Ford." The Hub uses legal names; Ford Motor Credit files separately, and Henry Ford Health is a different employer.
- Treating a staffing-firm placement at Ford as Ford sponsorship. The firm that files your petition is your employer.
- Letting a long shot eat your unemployment days. Your 90-day or 150-day limit keeps counting while you wait.

Does Ford sponsor green cards?
Ford's postings do not say, so check the government record. The Department of Labor's PERM disclosure data, whose latest public file is FY2026 Q3 (through 2026-06-30), lists certified green-card filings by employer name; search Ford Motor Company and Ford Motor Credit separately. As of 2026-10-21, DOL's analysts were reviewing applications with January 2026 priority dates.
Is Ford Motor Credit a separate H-1B sponsor?
Yes. The Hub lists each petitioner by the employer name and tax ID on its Form I-129, so Ford Motor Credit files under its own name and is not counted in Ford Motor Company's figures. Search the Hub for FORD MOTOR CREDIT and read its own columns. The one Ford Credit posting we read, a Salt Lake City cash management analyst role posted 2026-10-30, said visa sponsorship is not available.

How we checked this: we used the FY2024 USCIS Employer Data Hub extract behind our company pages, read 17 US postings on careers.ford.com in early November 2026, read Note 14 of Ford's 10-Q filed 2026-10-29, and checked every rule against the official pages above as of 2026-11-01.
This is general information, not legal or tax advice; your own I-20, EAD, I-94 and notices, and your DSO or immigration attorney, govern your case.
If you are on OPT or STEM OPT and want a search aimed at automotive and engineering employers whose postings are actually open to visa holders, F1Jobs can help you build that list and work it.
