F-1 Visa Renewal Interview for Continuing Students: Grades, CPT and Program Questions Over Winter Break
Flying home this winter with an expired F-1 stamp? These are the grades, funding and CPT questions officers ask returning students, and the documents that answer each one.

Part of our guide to Day 1 CPT.
Yes, you need an interview to renew your F-1 visa. Since 2025-10-01 the State Department has required F-1 applicants, renewals included, to interview in person, and since 2025-09-06 you apply in your country of nationality or residence. For a continuing student, the F-1 visa renewal interview questions officers ask usually center on five things: your grades and academic progress, who is paying for the rest of your degree, any CPT employer and how that training fits your curriculum, why you are traveling now, and your plans after graduation. Your signed I-20, transcript, enrollment letter, CPT letter and funding documents answer most of them.
Status as of 2026-11-01:
- In effect: in-person interviews for F-1 renewals (since 2025-10-01); the nationality-or-residence venue rule (since 2025-09-06); Proclamation 10998's visa restrictions on 39 countries (since 2026-01-01).
- Blocked: the Duration of Status (D/S) final rule, blocked by a federal court since 2026-09-14; summary judgment briefed; DHS's appeal pending. You are still admitted for D/S at re-entry, and the 60-day F-1 grace period still applies.
- In effect, challenged: SEVP's CPT broadcasts BCM 2608-01 and BCM 2608-02. The preliminary-injunction hearing in AAU v. DHS is set for 2026-11-06 at 3:00 p.m. (check the court docket for the outcome after 2026-11-06).
This post is the question bank. For the renewal process itself, from the DS-160 to passport pickup, see our guide to renewing your F-1 visa stamp.
What questions are asked in an F-1 visa renewal interview?
An F-1 renewal interview checks whether you are still the student your visa was issued to, and still on track to finish. Expect questions on grades and credits completed, funding for the remaining terms, any CPT employer and how that training fits your degree, why you are traveling now, and your plans after graduation.
The difference from your first interview is the record: the officer now sees your prior visa, your SEVIS record and your DS-160's US employment history, often a CPT employer. Anything that changed since your last visa (a new major, an extension, a lighter load, a new sponsor, an internship) invites a question, so carry the document that shows it. Answer accurately and briefly; a memorized script that drifts from your paperwork does more harm than a plain, true answer.
Do I need an interview to renew my F-1 visa?
Yes, for practically every F-1 student. The State Department's interview waiver update of 2025-09-18, effective 2025-10-01, requires F, M, J, H-1B, H-4 and L applicants, renewals included, to interview in person. The waivers that remain cover B-1/B-2 (and Border Crossing Card) and H-2A renewals within 12 months, plus diplomatic classes.
You also apply in your country of nationality or residence (since 2025-09-06), so a third-country appointment is generally not a fallback. Since 2026-08-01, routine visa services at 25 African posts have moved to 20 regional hubs, which can mean an appointment in a neighboring country (Brown University's summary), so confirm your assigned post first.
What changed for returning students (as of 2026-11)
| Topic | Old rule | Rule as of 2026-11-01 | What to do differently |
|---|---|---|---|
| Interview | Many F-1 renewals qualified for an interview waiver | In-person interview, renewals included (since 2025-10-01) | Book a real interview slot, not a dropbox |
| Where to apply | Third-country posts were often an option | Country of nationality or residence (since 2025-09-06) | Plan the trip around your home post |
| Admission at re-entry | D/S | Still D/S; the fixed-period rule is blocked (since 2026-09-14) | Check your I-94 after you land |
| CPT scrutiny | School-by-school readings of the CPT regulation | BCM 2608-01/-02 in force; hearing 2026-11-06 | Carry proof the training is required by your curriculum |
F-1 visa renewal interview questions, by topic
Officers do not publish a question list. These follow from what a continuing student's record shows, grouped by what the officer is trying to learn.
Academic progress and grades
- "What year are you in, and when do you finish?"
- "How are your grades?" or "What is your GPA?"
- "Why did your program end date change?"
- "Did you take fewer classes last term?"
- "Did you change your major or degree level?"
The officer is checking that you are progressing toward the degree on your I-20 and keeping a full course of study. If your grades dipped, say so plainly. If your end date moved, bring the updated I-20 and the earlier one.
Settle any lighter course load before you fly. Study in the States' fall refresher of 2026-10-21 is blunt: "Approval of a reduced course load from your academic advisor is insufficient." You need your DSO's approval before you drop below full time, and the DSO records it in SEVIS; if you are unsure yours was recorded, ask now.
Funding changes
- "Who is paying for your education now?"
- "Do you still have your assistantship or scholarship?"
- "Do you work on campus? How many hours?"
The officer is checking that you can pay for the rest of the program without unauthorized work. Bring evidence that matches the financial section of your current I-20 (bank statements, a sponsor, assistantship or scholarship letter), and the new sponsor's documents if your sponsor changed.
Will the officer ask about my CPT?
If your SEVIS record shows CPT, or your DS-160 lists a US employer, prepare as if it will come up:
- "Where did you intern, and what did you do?"
- "What dates were you authorized for?"
- "How is this internship part of your degree? Which course?"
- "Was it full-time or part-time, and are you going back after the break?"
- At a Day 1 CPT program: "Why did you choose this school?" and "How often are you on campus?"
The officer is checking that the work was authorized CPT under 8 CFR 214.2(f)(10)(i), which is unchanged. What changed in 2026 is how SEVP reads it. BCM 2608-01 (2026-08-12) allows CPT only "if its absence would make the attainment of a degree an impossibility," and BCM 2608-02 (2026-08-24) says "CPT fulfills an integral element of an established curriculum and successful completion is contingent on participation in CPT." Both remain in force while AAU v. DHS is pending, and no ruling exists as of 2026-11-01. Pauses are school by school: the University of Rochester, for one, has paused new CPT approvals except degree-required training since its 2026-08-28 notice.
A complete, truthful answer names the employer, your role, the dates on your I-20 CPT authorization, and the requirement the training satisfies. If your school paused CPT and your next CPT is uncertain, say exactly that; never describe work you have not been authorized for. Our guide to answering CPT work-authorization questions in internship interviews covers the employer side, and our CPT pauses and lawsuit tracker follows the case. At a Day 1 CPT program, review your situation with your DSO before you travel, and with an immigration attorney if you have a prior refusal.
Why are you traveling now?
- "Why are you going home now, and for how long?"
- "When does your next term start?"
The officer is checking that the trip fits continued study; an enrollment letter or your spring registration answers it in one page.
What will you do after graduation?
- "What will you do after you graduate?"
- "Will you apply for OPT?"
- "Do you plan to stay in the US?"
F-1 is a nonimmigrant visa, and OPT is temporary training tied to your degree. Give an honest answer about your field, any OPT plan and your longer-term direction; our breakdown of the plans-after-graduation question goes deeper. DHS's OPT fee plan (published 2026-10-08; comments close 2026-11-09) is only a proposal, and under it the school, not the student, would be the legal payer, though it could pass the cost on.
Background and online presence
Your answers about arrests, prior refusals and travel must be truthful and consistent with your DS-160, which has asked for social-media identifiers since 2019. State has applied an online-presence review to F, M and J applicants since June 2025. Its count of more than 300,000 visa revocations (2026-10-20) has no student breakdown, and a revoked visa is not a terminated SEVIS record. If you have any arrest or charge, talk to an immigration attorney before you leave the US.
Question-to-document map (as of 2026-11)
| Question | What the officer is checking | Document that answers it |
|---|---|---|
| What year are you in, and when do you finish? | Normal progress toward your I-20 end date | Current I-20; transcript |
| How are your grades? | You are still a genuine full-time student | Official transcript |
| Did you take fewer classes? | Any reduced course load was DSO-approved | SEVIS record of the approval; DSO letter |
| Who is paying now? | Funds for the remaining terms | Bank statements, sponsor or assistantship letter |
| Where did you intern? | The work was authorized CPT | I-20 CPT authorization; employer letter |
| How is that internship part of your degree? | The training is integral to the curriculum | Course registration, syllabus or program requirement |
| Why travel now? | The trip fits continued study | Enrollment letter for next term |
| What after graduation? | Plans consistent with a student visa | Your own clear answer; I-20 program details |
What should I bring? A document order for continuing students
The officer may ask for none of this; the order lets you find any page in seconds.
- Print your DS-160 confirmation and appointment confirmation; keep them with your passport, visa fee receipt and Form I-901 SEVIS fee confirmation.
- Place your current Form I-20 next, signed by you, with an unexpired DSO travel signature; earlier I-20s go behind it.
- Request an official transcript from your registrar's office and file it third.
- Add an enrollment verification letter from the registrar for next term.
- Add your CPT packet: the I-20 page showing CPT authorization (employer, dates, full- or part-time), the employer's letter, and proof of the requirement the CPT satisfies.
- Finish with funding evidence: bank statements, sponsor letters, and any assistantship or scholarship letter.
Do I need a new travel signature?
Check the DSO signature date on your I-20 first. A travel signature is generally valid for 12 months while you are enrolled and 6 months on OPT or STEM OPT. Boston University's international office treats one as valid if it is dated "no more than one year before the date you expect to return," and recommends a more recent signature if you plan to renew your visa on the trip. Request one before the pre-break rush, and after any change to your I-20.
Is it safe to travel for winter break 2026-27 on F-1?
No one can promise that. Boston University's office says "International travel risks remain high due to increased federal vetting, travel bans, and unpredictable visa processing." Our winter break 2026-27 travel checklist covers the full pre-departure list; these are the rules, as of 2026-11-01, that touch a renewal.
- D/S still applies. USCIS's Form I-539 page (updated 2026-10-07) says DHS "is preliminarily enjoined from taking any further action to implement the final rule" and "USCIS will proceed under the previous regulatory provisions." Pages saying the fixed-period rule began on 2026-09-15 are wrong; it was blocked the day before and never took effect.
- Travel bans. Proclamation 10998, in effect since 2026-01-01, fully restricts 19 countries and partially restricts 20 more. Partial-list nationals are barred from new F visas, except Turkmenistan, where only immigrant visas are restricted; Nigeria is one partial-list example. Earlier visas were not revoked, so you are unaffected while you stay in the US, but with a listed nationality you generally cannot get a new F-1 visa abroad while it stands. Talk to your DSO and an immigration attorney before leaving.
- Health entry rules. A CDC order bars foreign nationals who were in the DRC, Uganda or South Sudan in the prior 21 days; it ends 2026-11-10 unless continued.
- Device searches. CBP's own table shows 52,081 device searches in FY2026 Q1-Q3, up from 39,251 a year earlier, though in FY2025 "less than 0.01 percent" of arriving international travelers had a device searched.
- December graduates with OPT pending. Cornell, Johns Hopkins and USC advise against international travel until the EAD arrives, since a missed biometrics appointment abroad can delay or deny the case; ask your DSO first.
How early should I book a renewal appointment?
As soon as your dates are firm. Waits differ by post and change monthly, so check the State Department's Global Visa Wait Times page rather than a forum screenshot (it read "Last updated: 21-OCT-2026" as of 2026-11-01). Then work backward from your first day of classes: BU advises allowing "at least 30 days for visa processing." Mission India has allowed one free reschedule since 2025-01-01.
A worked winter-break timeline
Say your fall exams end 2026-12-11, spring classes begin 2027-01-19, and your stamp expired in August (illustrative dates; use your own calendar). Thirty days before 2027-01-19 is 2026-12-20, so BU's buffer puts your interview between your arrival home and about 2026-12-20. If your post's wait runs past that, rethink the trip with your DSO.
| Date | Step | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| 2026-11-01 to 11-05 | Check stamp expiry, passport, I-20 end date and travel signature date | Tells you whether you need a renewal at all |
| 2026-11-06, 3:00 p.m. | CPT preliminary-injunction hearing in AAU v. DHS | Re-check the docket before you finalize CPT documents |
| Early November | Submit the DS-160 and book the earliest slot that fits | Waits change monthly |
| Mid-to-late November | Request travel signature, transcript and enrollment letter | Offices get busy before break |
| 2026-12-11 | Federal funding runs out unless Congress passes funding by this date | Consular work has generally continued in past lapses |
| 2026-12-12 to 12-20 | Interview window at your home post | Keeps a 30-day buffer before 2027-01-19 |
| On return in January | Download your I-94 | Confirm you were admitted for D/S |
What if your visa is delayed or refused?
A 221(g) is a hold, not a denial. State's guidance says its timing "will vary based on the individual circumstances of each case," and requested documents are due within a year or a new fee applies. The law firm Mintz wrote on 2026-10-30 that these holds "can delay issuance for weeks or months." Our guide to 221(g) administrative processing covers responses. A 214(b) refusal is a decision on that application, not a hold; talk to an immigration attorney before you reapply. Either way, tell your DSO at once if you may miss the start of term, so they can explain what happens to your SEVIS record.
Who to ask about what
- Your DSO: I-20 changes, travel signatures, reduced course load, CPT authorization, SEVIS, a late return.
- A licensed immigration attorney: prior refusals, any arrest or charge, a travel-ban nationality, a Day 1 CPT history, any question about your status.
- Your consular post: appointment logistics only.
Common mistakes
- Expecting a waiver or a third-country slot. F-1 renewals need an in-person interview, in your country of nationality or residence.
- Booking the interview days before classes. Leave BU's 30-day buffer, and more if your post runs long.
- Traveling on a stale travel signature. Check the date and get a fresh one before break.
- Leaving CPT off the DS-160. List it truthfully; the officer can compare it with your I-20 CPT authorization.
- Not being able to explain how CPT fits your degree. That is the center of SEVP's 2026 guidance.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need an interview to renew my F-1 visa?
Yes, in practically every case. Under the State Department's interview waiver update, effective 2025-10-01, F-1 applicants interview in person, renewals included, and the waivers that remain cover classes such as B-1/B-2 and H-2A renewals, not students. Since 2025-09-06 you also apply in your country of nationality or residence.
What questions are asked in an F-1 renewal interview?
Continuing students are usually asked about grades and credits completed, who is funding the rest of the program, any CPT employer and how that training is part of the degree, why they are traveling now, and plans after graduation. Bring your signed I-20, transcript, enrollment letter, CPT documents and funding evidence. Answer accurately and briefly, because officers can compare your answers with your SEVIS record and DS-160.
Will the officer ask about my CPT?
If your SEVIS record or DS-160 shows CPT or a US employer, expect it. As of 2026-11-01, SEVP's CPT broadcasts BCM 2608-01 and 2608-02 remain in force while a court challenge is pending, with a preliminary-injunction hearing set for 2026-11-06 at 3:00 p.m. Be ready to name the employer, your role and dates, and the course or degree requirement the training fulfills, with your I-20 CPT authorization and employer letter in hand.
Is it safe to travel for winter break 2026-27 on F-1?
No one can promise a trip is risk-free, and Boston University's international office says travel risks remain high. As of 2026-11-01 the Duration of Status rule has been blocked by a federal court since 2026-09-14, so you are still admitted for D/S. But a renewal needs an in-person interview, and Proclamation 10998 bars new F visas for nationals of most of its 39 listed countries. Talk to your DSO before booking, and to an immigration attorney if you have a listed nationality, a prior refusal or any arrest.
How early should I book a renewal appointment?
As soon as your travel dates are firm. Check the State Department's Global Visa Wait Times page for your post, because waits change every month, and schedule the interview at least 30 days before you must be back in class, the buffer Boston University's international office recommends for visa processing. A 221(g) hold can take longer, so do not book a return flight that assumes same-week issuance.
