The short answer, as of November 1, 2026: the industries hiring international students and graduates with the most momentum, measured by job postings across all US workers, are engineering, healthcare and data-center build-outs, with production and manufacturing close behind. Software development is the weakest major sector, per Indeed Hiring Lab's October 22, 2026 snapshot. Federal data agree on healthcare: the BLS September jobs report, released October 2, showed 29,000 jobs added, 4.2% unemployment and 17,000 new health care jobs. For an OPT or STEM OPT job seeker, a hot sector only helps if the job is directly related to your major and the employer can handle the visa steps below.

Status line, as of 2026-11-01. Released: Indeed's snapshot (2026-10-22) and BLS September data (2026-10-02). Scheduled: the BLS October jobs report, Friday 2026-11-06, 8:30 a.m. ET (check the BLS release for the outcome after 2026-11-06; we will update this page with it). Not published: NACE's Class of 2027 projection. Visa rules, unchanged: OPT unemployment limits of 90 days (150 in aggregate with STEM OPT) are in effect; the $100,000 H-1B fee is blocked by two courts and not collected, though Proclamation 11069 stays in effect on paper through 2027-09-21.

Which industries are hiring international students in 2026?

Engineering, healthcare and data-center work are the strongest sectors for international graduates in late 2026. Indeed Hiring Lab's October 22, 2026 snapshot puts engineering postings near 145 and healthcare near 131 (February 2020 = 100), production and manufacturing near 124, and software development near 78-79. Data-center postings stood near 247 in September 2026, measured against June 2024.

Indeed's October 2026 labor market snapshot describes its Job Postings Index as seasonally adjusted and based on a seven-day trailing average of postings on Indeed, with February 1, 2020 set to 100. The overall index read 103.8 on October 16, up 2.8% from a year earlier. In Hiring Lab's words, "Engineering occupations are proving to be a particular area of strength." These are postings for all US workers, not jobs reserved for visa holders.

Common misconception, then correction. "Engineering is at 145 and software is at 79, so engineering has almost twice as many jobs." Not what the index says. Each sector is indexed to its own February 2020 level, so a sector at 79 can still carry more openings than one at 145. Read the index as momentum, then use employer filing data (below) to see where sponsorship happens.

What postings data does not tell you about sponsorship

A posting is not a hire, and it is not a sponsorship offer. Two other measures matter more than the sector headline.

Seniority. Hiring Lab's July 2026 analysis, the labor market is tilting toward seniority, found entry-level postings down 7.5% year over year in May 2026 while senior postings rose 14.7%. A growing sector can still be hard for a new graduate if its growth is mostly senior.

Sponsorship language. Match.dev, a single vendor, read 2,718 US software, data and other tech engineering roles at 136 companies on 2026-10-13 (not the civil or mechanical jobs in Indeed's engineering category) and reported that 88.1% said nothing about sponsorship, 10.0% called it possible but not promised, 0.4% offered it and 1.1% refused it. Silence is the norm, so have a ready answer; our guide on how to explain OPT to an employer who has never hired on it has the wording.

To judge sponsorship, use filing data instead of job ads. The USCIS H-1B Employer Data Hub now says it covers fiscal year 2009 through fiscal year 2026 (quarter 4) and can be searched by employer, state and NAICS industry code, and DOL's OFLC performance data has LCA and PERM disclosure files through FY2026 Q3 (June 30, 2026). Hospitals, manufacturers, banks and consultancies all appear there, which is why H-1B sponsorship runs well beyond big tech.

Is software hiring still down in 2026?

Yes, measured by postings. Software development sat near 78-79 in Indeed's October snapshot, below its February 2020 level and the lowest of the sectors charted. Entry-level roles were only 4.5% of software development postings in Q1 2026, per Hiring Lab.

CNBC reported on 2026-10-11 that software postings were about 15% above February 2025 but about 27.5% below their pre-pandemic level: off the floor, recovering slowly. Indeed also counts two tech hubs, Seattle (67) and San Francisco (72), among the lowest local indices in the nation.

That does not mean a computer science graduate should leave software; software developers remain one of the largest occupations in DOL's H-1B labor condition data. Widen where you look instead: software, data and controls roles at hospitals, manufacturers, utilities and data-center operators can be just as directly related to a CS degree. Our list of tech jobs that are holding up against AI in 2026 covers which specialties hold up best.

Are engineering jobs growing in 2026?

Yes. Engineering is the strongest sector in Indeed's index at about 145, and data-center postings are growing faster still. For an international graduate with an engineering degree, that is the best news in the data.

The roles behind the number are the ones a mechanical, electrical, civil, industrial or chemical engineering degree points to: design and project engineering, controls and automation, process and quality, power systems and commissioning. Three visa points shape this search:

Data centers: the fastest-growing niche

Indeed says data-center postings were about 147% above their June 2024 level by September 2026, and that "Data center-related job postings have grown another 20% in just three months." The work is electrical (power distribution, substations), mechanical (cooling), controls, commissioning, construction project engineering and critical-facility operations.

The visa catch is structure. Much of this work runs through general contractors, subcontractors and staffing firms. USCIS's STEM OPT page warns that employment through "temp" agencies may not show a bona fide employer-employee relationship, and that staffing and consulting firms qualify only if they provide the training and keep that relationship themselves. Confirm who would sign your I-983 before you accept. Our guide to data center jobs with H-1B sponsorship covers which employers file and how to check them.

Is healthcare a good field for OPT students?

Healthcare is still adding jobs, which makes it one of the steadier sectors for OPT. Indeed puts healthcare postings near 131, and BLS reported that "Health care employment continued its upward trend in September (+17,000)" in its September 2026 Employment Situation.

The pace has slowed: 17,000 in September against an average of 33,000 a month over the prior 12 months. ADP's September report (2026-09-30) showed education and health services adding 55,000 private jobs. Two features matter for visa holders.

Most clinical roles need a US license. Nursing and other clinical jobs usually require US licensure first, so many international graduates enter through degree-related non-clinical roles: health data analytics, health IT and informatics, biomedical engineering, clinical research and quality.

Some hospitals file outside the H-1B cap. Under 8 CFR 214.2(h)(8)(iii)(F), in effect since 2025-01-17, a nonprofit can qualify as cap-exempt through a written affiliation agreement with a university where "a fundamental activity" of the nonprofit supports the university's mission; whether a given hospital qualifies is a question for its counsel. A cap-exempt petition skips the lottery, but it gets no cap-gap, so it has to be filed well before your OPT EAD ends. Florida's Board of Governors also paused new H-1B hires at its 12 public universities from 2026-03-02 until at least 2027-01-05, with renewals unaffected (Central Florida Public Media). If a hospital belongs to a public university in Florida or Texas, ask HR whether the freeze reaches it.

How to redirect your OPT search using sector data

  1. Find the major and CIP code on your Form I-20, and list job titles whose duties you could describe as directly related to that major (your DSO can explain how your school reviews this).
  2. Ask your DSO for the unemployment count your SEVIS record shows, and keep your own tally. The SEVIS Help Hub allows 90 days on post-completion OPT and 150 days in aggregate on STEM OPT, counted from the actual OPT start date for each day without employer information.
  3. Map those titles onto the growing sectors in the table above, and add at least one sector you had not considered.
  4. Verify each target employer's filing history on the USCIS H-1B Employer Data Hub and in DOL's LCA disclosure files.
  5. Ask a STEM OPT employer whether it is enrolled in E-Verify and will sign Form I-983 before you accept an offer.
  6. Confirm with HR whether the role would be cap-subject or cap-exempt. FY2028 H-1B registration is not announced (USCIS must give at least 30 days' notice), wage-weighted selection has been in effect since 2026-02-27 (a Level IV offer gets four entries, Level I one), and cap-gap covers only timely cap-subject change-of-status petitions, to April 1 of the fiscal year requested or the petition start date, if earlier.
  7. Re-check the BLS release after 2026-11-06 and Indeed's next snapshot, and adjust your sector list.

Worked example: an MS in electrical engineering with OPT starting September 1, 2026

This is an illustration, not advice about your record. The SEVIS count your DSO sees governs, not our arithmetic.

DateWhat happens
2026-09-01OPT start date on the EAD; SEVIS begins counting days with no employer reported
2026-10-3161 unemployment days counted if no employer has been reported (our arithmetic)
2026-11-06BLS October jobs report, 8:30 a.m. ET
2026-11-29The 90th unemployment day (our arithmetic)

Going past the limit is a status problem, so a student close to it should talk to the DSO before reaching it, not after. Suppose this graduate has applied only to software roles, the weakest sector, and some of them may not be directly related to an electrical engineering degree. With about four weeks left, the data points to power, controls and commissioning roles at data-center contractors, utilities and manufacturers, where postings are growing and the degree fit is clear. Before accepting, the graduate would confirm E-Verify enrollment and who would sign a future I-983 (both matter for STEM OPT later) and the employer's H-1B filing history, then report the new employer the way the school requires (the SEVP Portal or the DSO) so the days stop counting.

What about AI and entry-level hiring?

The AI numbers in circulation measure different things. Indeed's 7.3% is the share of postings with AI or generative-AI keywords; Lightcast reported on 2026-10-19 that about 3% of postings mention AI skills; NACE's "more than a third of entry-level jobs require AI skills" is employer-reported (2026-04-20).

On jobs, Stanford's "Canaries" study (revised 2026-08-12) reports a gap of roughly 19% for workers aged 22-25, driven by hiring; it is descriptive, not proof that AI caused it. NBER Working Paper 35796 found that unemployment "did not spike in summer 2026": in the authors' IZA summary, the official summer rate for bachelor's graduates aged 22-25 was 7.3%, against 7.2% in 2025 and 7.8% in 2024, though a broader measure that adds people who want a job reached 10.4%. If you are weighing whether a smaller international cohort eases competition, our analysis of jobs for international students with a smaller 2027 cohort works through the SEVIS numbers.

When is the October 2026 jobs report?

BLS publishes it on Friday, November 6, 2026, at 8:30 a.m. ET (7:00 p.m. in India), per its release schedule; JOLTS (11-03), ADP (11-04) and Challenger (11-05) come first. Watch the health care line, revisions (July and August were revised down a combined 60,000 in the September report) and the unemployment rate. In the Federal Reserve's October 14 Beige Book, most Districts described "little or no net change in overall employment levels."

NACE has not released a Class of 2027 hiring projection as of 2026-11-01; the first Class of 2026 projection came on 2025-11-12, and NACE's spring 2026 update had employers planning to hire 5.6% more Class of 2026 graduates (NACE press room). Do not trust a Class of 2027 percentage you see before NACE publishes one. Our preview of the October 2026 jobs report for OPT and H-1B job seekers explains which lines matter most.
