The October 2026 Jobs Report (November 6): What to Watch If You're Job-Hunting on OPT or H-1B
The October jobs report lands Friday, November 6. Here is which numbers actually move sponsored and entry-level hiring, and which ones to ignore while your OPT clock runs.

Part of our guide to OPT unemployment days.
The October 2026 jobs report comes out on Friday, November 6, 2026, at 8:30 a.m. Eastern, when the Bureau of Labor Statistics publishes its monthly Employment Situation release (that is 7:00 p.m. in India, since US daylight saving time ended on November 1). Until then, any October figure you see is a forecast. The last report, for September, showed payrolls up just 29,000 and unemployment at 4.2%. If you are job-hunting on OPT, STEM OPT or H-1B, the headline matters less than three things: health care and engineering hiring, the JOLTS hires figure, and the entry-level squeeze.
Status line, as of 2026-11-01. Released: the BLS September jobs report (2026-10-02) and JOLTS for August (2026-09-29). Scheduled: JOLTS (Tue 11-03), ADP (Wed 11-04), Challenger (Thu 11-05), the BLS October jobs report (Fri 11-06, 8:30 a.m. ET) and CPI (Tue 11-10). In effect, and unchanged by any jobs number: the 90-day OPT and 150-day STEM OPT unemployment limits, and the up-to-60-day grace period for laid-off H-1B workers. Proposed only: ending that worker grace period (comments close 11-10). Not true: "the Fed is cutting rates." It raised rates on 2026-09-16 and held on 2026-10-28.
This page is a preview. After BLS publishes on November 6, we will add the October figures here under a dated "Updated" note at the top.
When is the October 2026 jobs report released?
The Bureau of Labor Statistics releases the October 2026 jobs report, formally called the Employment Situation, on Friday, November 6, 2026, at 8:30 a.m. Eastern Time. Three earlier releases set the stage that week: JOLTS job openings for September on November 3, ADP's private payrolls on November 4 and Challenger's announced job cuts on November 5.
BLS posts every date on its release calendar, and the report itself appears on the Employment Situation summary page at release time. The table gives each series' last reading, so you know what "better" or "worse" would mean.
The November 2026 labor-data calendar (as of 2026-11)
| Date (2026) | Release | Last reading before it | Why it matters if you need sponsorship |
|---|---|---|---|
| Tue Nov 3, 10:00 a.m. ET | JOLTS, September (BLS) | August: 7.1M openings, 5.2M hires, 3.1M quits, 1.6M layoffs | Hires, not openings, are the door you are trying to get through |
| Wed Nov 4, 8:15 a.m. ET | ADP National Employment Report, October | September: +90,000 private jobs; education and health +55,000 | An early read on whether health hiring held up |
| Thu Nov 5 | Challenger job-cut report, October | September: 43,281 announced cuts; 573,195 year to date; tech 165,925 year to date | Shows which industries are shrinking; announcements are not completed layoffs |
| Fri Nov 6, 8:30 a.m. ET | BLS Employment Situation, October | September: +29,000 payrolls; 4.2% unemployment | The headline, the revisions and the industry detail |
| Tue Nov 10, 8:30 a.m. ET | CPI, October | September: +3.7% year over year; core +2.6% | Tells you whether pay offers are keeping up with prices |
| Mid-November (expected) | New York Fed college labor market, Q3 | Q2: recent-grad unemployment about 5.6%; underemployment 42% | The closest thing to a new-grad scorecard |
| Tue Dec 1 and Fri Dec 4 | JOLTS for October; BLS November jobs | Not yet released | The next two reads before year-end |
| Tue-Wed Dec 8-9 | Federal Reserve meeting | Held at 3.75%-4.00% on Oct 28 | Sets the rate backdrop for startups and rate-sensitive employers |
What did the September 2026 jobs report show?
It showed an economy that is growing but barely hiring. BLS counted payroll growth of just 29,000 in September, unemployment at 4.2%, and downward revisions of a combined 60,000 to July and August, so the summer was weaker than first reported.
- Health care slowed. It added 17,000 jobs, against its prior 12-month average of about 33,000 a month.
- Pay grew more slowly than prices. Average hourly earnings reached $37.81, up 3.0% from a year earlier, while the September CPI rose 3.7%. By our arithmetic, real pay fell; Indeed's posted wages rose only 2.4%.
- Output did not fall. BEA's advance estimate put third-quarter GDP growth at 3.4% annualized, and seasonally adjusted initial unemployment claims were 194,000 for the week ending October 24, per the Department of Labor's weekly report of October 29 (that link always shows the latest week).
The Federal Reserve's October 14 Beige Book said most Districts saw "little or no net change in overall employment," and five Districts cited AI-linked attrition or delayed hiring. The Dallas District report added: "One accounting contact noted that some large accounting firms are delaying new employment contracts because they may not need as many entry-level employees," which the contact tied partly to AI efficiency gains. That matters if you are an accounting graduate on OPT, but it is one anecdote, not a count.
Our reading: a low-hire, low-fire market protects people who already have jobs and squeezes people trying to get in, such as a new grad on OPT or a laid-off H-1B worker in a grace period. That is why the JOLTS hires figure on November 3 matters more to you than the unemployment rate on November 6.
Did the Fed cut rates in October 2026?
No. The Federal Reserve raised rates in September and held them in October.
Common misconception: "The Fed is cutting rates, so hiring will pick back up by spring."
Correction (as of 2026-11-01): The Fed raised its target range by 0.25 percentage point on September 16, 2026, to 3.75%-4.00%, by a 12-0 vote, its first increase since 2023. On October 28 it held that range by a 10-2 vote; the two dissenters, Cook and Hammack, wanted another hike. The next meeting is December 8-9.
Higher borrowing costs tend to make venture-funded startups and rate-sensitive industries cautious about headcount (our reading, not a forecast). Do not build your search timeline around a rate cut that has not happened.
Which numbers in the jobs report matter on OPT or H-1B?
The revisions, the industry detail and the hires rate matter most. Neither the Employment Situation nor JOLTS identifies visa holders or recent graduates, so you have to read them sideways.
What to read on November 6, and what it tells you (as of 2026-11)
| Number | Where it is in the release | Last reading | How to read it on OPT or H-1B |
|---|---|---|---|
| Payroll change and revisions | Summary, first paragraphs | +29,000 (Sept); July and Aug revised down a combined 60,000 | Judge the three-month direction, not one month |
| Industry jobs | Table B-1 | Health care +17,000 (Sept) | Shows where hiring is happening, by industry |
| Unemployment rate | Summary and Table A-1 | 4.2% (Sept) | An all-worker average; Table A-4, by education, starts at age 25 and misses most new grads |
| Average hourly earnings | Summary and Table B-3 | $37.81, +3.0% (Sept) | Compare with October CPI on Nov 10 when you weigh an offer |
| Hires | JOLTS, Nov 3 | 5.2M (Aug) | The flow of people actually getting hired |
What you can safely ignore: a one-tenth-of-a-point move in the unemployment rate (the release's technical note explains the survey's margin of error), the stock market's reaction in the first hour, and any "consensus forecast" quoted as if it were data.
Is the job market getting worse for new grads in 2026?
By the official unemployment measure, barely; at the point of entry, yes. Recent-grad unemployment has been roughly flat for a year, but entry-level postings have shrunk while senior ones grew.
- NBER working paper 35796 (September 2026) found no summer-2026 spike: official unemployment for recent graduates aged 22 to 25 was 7.3%, against 7.2% in 2025 and 7.8% in 2024, though a broader measure reached 10.4%.
- The New York Fed put recent-grad unemployment at about 5.6% and underemployment at 42% for 2026:Q2. The two define "recent graduate" differently, so compare each with its own history. Q3 is due in November.
- Indeed's seniority analysis found entry-level postings down 7.5% and senior postings up 14.7% year over year (May 2026), with entry-level roles at 4.5% of software postings in Q1 2026. Lightcast counts about one junior role per four senior roles, down from one per 2.5 in 2022.
- Stanford's "Canaries" paper (revised 2026-08-12) describes a gap of about 19% for workers aged 22 to 25 in AI-exposed jobs, and Census working paper CES-WP-26-56 found initial employment five points lower for the most AI-exposed majors. Both are descriptive; read them alongside the NBER result.
If you studied CS, our breakdown of what four 2026 studies say about the computer science unemployment rate explains why they disagree, and our playbook for entry-level tech jobs in the AI squeeze covers repositioning. One number people misuse: there were 1,192,572 active F and M records in October 2026 SEVIS data, 7.1% fewer than a year earlier (our sums of DHS tables). That does not hand you an easier search, for reasons we lay out in whether a smaller 2027 cohort means less OPT competition.
Which sectors are still hiring in late 2026?
Engineering and health care, by a wide margin over software. Indeed's October 22 labor-market snapshot put its overall Job Postings Index at 103.8 on October 16 (up 2.8% from a year earlier), where 100 is the February 2020 baseline.
By category: Engineering about 145, Healthcare about 131, Production about 124 and Software Development about 78 to 79, the lowest of the five charted. Two tech-heavy metros sat well below baseline: Seattle at 67 and San Francisco at 72. Indeed's separate data-center postings index reached 247 through September, but on its own baseline (June 2024 = 100), so do not compare it with the category numbers.
- Engineering degrees travel. With engineering postings far above baseline and data-center postings up sharply since mid-2024, electrical, mechanical and civil skills have more openings to aim at (our reading), including data-center roles where some employers sponsor H-1B.
- Health care is more than clinical work. Hospital systems hire data analysts, software engineers and IT staff. Under current rules, some nonprofit hospitals affiliated with a university can file H-1B petitions outside the annual cap (whether one qualifies is a question for its counsel). Cap-exempt petitions get no cap-gap extension, though, so the filing date has to work against your OPT end date.
- Software is thin and senior-tilted, not closed. Expect fewer postings and more experienced competition.
Posting volume is not sponsorship willingness. According to a single-vendor review by Match.dev of 2,718 engineering roles at 136 companies (read 2026-10-13), 88.1% of postings said nothing about sponsorship, 10.0% said it was possible but not promised, 0.4% explicitly offered it and 1.1% refused it.
What a weak or strong October report would change for you
Nothing about your legal clock, and only a little about your tactics. Decide in advance how you will react, so Friday's headline does not decide for you.
| If the October report shows | What it suggests | What to do differently | What does not change |
|---|---|---|---|
| Payrolls near zero or negative, revisions down again | The hiring freeze mood runs into year-end | Push late-stage processes to a decision; widen toward engineering and health employers | Your OPT or STEM OPT unemployment-day count |
| A modest gain, health care still adding | The same low-hire market, health still the engine | Keep health-adjacent roles in your weekly mix | Employers decide sponsorship one by one |
| A strong gain with upward revisions | Possibly a thaw, but one month is not a trend | Keep your pace; wait for JOLTS hires on Dec 1 to confirm | The H-1B rules and the timeline for your petition |
| Unemployment rate up noticeably | More experienced people competing for the same roles | Lead with specific, recent project results | Your I-20, EAD and I-94 dates |
How to read the jobs report on November 6
- Open the Employment Situation summary on bls.gov at 8:30 a.m. ET on November 6, not a social-media summary that stops at the headline.
- Read the revisions paragraph for August and September before you read the October number.
- Scroll to Table B-1 and note health care, professional and technical services, and information.
- Check average hourly earnings in Table B-3, then compare them with October CPI on bls.gov on November 10.
- Pull the hires figure from the BLS JOLTS release of November 3 and compare it with August's 5.2 million.
- Confirm your employer information is current in the SEVP Portal and ask your DSO for your unemployment-day count from SEVIS.
- Rebalance the coming week's applications toward sectors running above baseline, without pausing your search.
A worked timeline: day 37 of 90 on report day
Suppose your post-completion OPT start date is October 1, 2026, and you have had no qualifying employment since. SEVP counts unemployment from the OPT start date, for each day "without employer information," per its unemployment counter guidance. By our arithmetic, and the SEVIS count your DSO sees is the one that governs:
- Fri Nov 6 (October jobs report): day 37 of 90.
- Tue Dec 1 (JOLTS for October): day 62.
- Fri Dec 4 (November jobs report): day 65.
- Tue-Wed Dec 8-9 (Fed meeting): days 69 and 70.
- Tue Dec 29: day 90, in a week when many hiring teams slow down for the holidays.
Two more jobs reports arrive before your limit, and neither stops the count; waiting for a better report costs days you cannot get back. On STEM OPT the limit is 150 days in aggregate across the whole OPT period, not a fresh 150; our guide to how OPT unemployment days are counted covers the edge cases. Ask your DSO which kinds of work count as OPT employment.
If you are on H-1B and were just laid off, the current discretionary grace period of up to 60 days still applies. DHS's proposal to eliminate it is only a proposal; comments close on November 10, 2026, at 11:59 p.m. ET, and a closed comment period is not a final rule. It covers work-visa holders (H-1B, L-1, O-1, TN, E and H-1B1, plus dependents), not the separate F-1 grace period after a program ends. Our first-week plan for October 2026 tech layoffs covers the steps; a licensed immigration attorney should weigh your options.
Common mistakes
- Saying the Fed is cutting rates. It raised rates on 2026-09-16 and held them on 2026-10-28.
- Reading the unemployment rate as your odds. BLS does not break out visa holders, and its education table starts at age 25.
- Confusing announcements with layoffs. Challenger counts announced cuts, and Microsoft's offer to about 60,000 employees is a voluntary buyout offer, not 60,000 layoffs.
- Pausing applications to wait for a better market. Your OPT unemployment days keep counting either way.
- Assuming more postings means more sponsors. Most postings never mention sponsorship.
- Mixing up the two grace periods. The proposal to end the 60-day grace period covers H-1B and other work visas, not F-1 students.
Frequently asked questions
When is the October 2026 jobs report released?
The Bureau of Labor Statistics releases the October 2026 Employment Situation report on Friday, November 6, 2026, at 8:30 a.m. Eastern, which is 7:00 p.m. in India. JOLTS for September comes out on November 3, the ADP private-payroll report on November 4 and Challenger's job-cut report on November 5. No official October jobs number exists before the BLS release.
What did the September 2026 jobs report show?
Released on October 2, 2026, it showed payrolls up just 29,000 and unemployment at 4.2%, with July and August revised down by a combined 60,000. Health care added 17,000 jobs, compared with a pace of about 33,000 a month, and average hourly earnings rose 3.0% from a year earlier to $37.81.
Is the job market getting worse for new grads in 2026?
Not by the official unemployment measure, but getting in is harder. NBER working paper 35796 (September 2026) puts official unemployment for recent graduates aged 22 to 25 at 7.3%, against 7.2% in 2025 and 7.8% in 2024, with no summer spike, although a broader measure reached 10.4%. The bigger change is at the entry point, where Indeed found entry-level postings 7.5% below a year earlier in May 2026.
Which sectors are still hiring in late 2026?
Engineering and health care postings sit well above their pre-pandemic level, and software development sits well below it. In Indeed's October 22, 2026 snapshot, Engineering stood at about 145 on its postings index and Healthcare at about 131, against roughly 78 to 79 for Software Development, the lowest of the five categories it charted. BLS also counted 17,000 new health care jobs in September 2026.
Did the Fed cut rates in October 2026?
No. The Federal Reserve raised its target range by a quarter point to 3.75%-4.00% on September 16, 2026, its first increase since 2023, and held it there on October 28 by a 10-2 vote, with the two dissenters favoring another increase. The next meeting is December 8-9, 2026.
