Mechanical Engineer Interview Questions for International New Grads: Technical Rounds, ITAR Screens and OPT
The questions mechanical engineering loops actually ask, how to read ITAR and U.S.-person language in a job ad, and the OPT checks to run before you spend a week preparing.

Mechanical engineer interview questions for new grads cluster in five areas: statics and strength of materials, thermodynamics and fluids, GD&T, material selection and failure analysis, plus a long walkthrough of one CAD or FEA project. On F-1, OPT or STEM OPT, run two checks before you prepare at all. Does the role need a "U.S. person" under export-control rules such as ITAR? (F-1, OPT and H-1B holders are not U.S. persons.) And can the employer support STEM OPT through E-Verify and Form I-983?
Status as of 2026-11-01:
- In effect, unchanged: OPT unemployment limits of 90 days (post-completion) and 150 days in aggregate (STEM OPT); the STEM OPT conditions of an E-Verify employer and a signed Form I-983; and the 180-day automatic extension for timely STEM OPT filers, which the 2026-10-14 EAD final rule did not touch.
- Funded to a date: E-Verify runs on the continuing resolution through 2026-12-11; after that, it depends on Congress passing funding by then.
- Proposed only: the OPT fee NPRM (published 2026-10-08; comments close 2026-11-09) would have the SEVP-certified school pay a fee before OPT and STEM OPT recommendations, a cost schools could pass on. It is not law, and it would reach only DSO recommendations dated 60 or more days after a final rule.
Mechanical engineer interview questions: what to expect
A new-grad mechanical engineering technical interview usually mixes whiteboard fundamentals (free-body diagrams, beam bending, energy balances), a drawing with GD&T callouts to read, a material-selection or failure scenario, and a deep dive into one project. Interviewers score your assumptions, units and sanity checks more than recall. For F-1 candidates, export-control screening runs alongside these rounds.
| Stage | What it tests | Visa or export question you may get | Your move |
|---|---|---|---|
| Application form | Basic fit | "Authorized to work?", "Require sponsorship?", "U.S. person?" | Answer each one separately and truthfully |
| Recruiter screen | Motivation, pay, start date | ITAR, EAR or clearance needs | Ask about export control, E-Verify and Form I-983 |
| Technical phone screen | Fundamentals, one hand calculation | Rarely | Say assumptions and units out loud |
| Panel or design review | Project deep dive, drawing reading | A U.S.-person check before site access | Present your own work at the level of method and results |
| Offer | Level, location, start date | Hiring-site E-Verify, I-983 sign-off | Set the start date against your unemployment count |
The technical question bank
Statics and strength of materials
These check your setup: draw the free-body diagram, state assumptions, check units.
- "A cantilever of length L has a load P at the free end. Where is the maximum moment?" At the fixed support,
M = P*L. Add bending stresssigma = M*c/I, tip deflectionP*L^3/(3*E*I), and what you would change to cut deflection. - "Same mass of steel: solid shaft or a larger-diameter hollow tube in torsion?" The tube. Material farther from the axis raises the polar moment
Jfaster than it raisesr, lowering peak shear stress (tau = T*r/J) and twist. - "Why did this bracket crack at the hole?" Stress concentration. A small hole in a wide plate under tension has a theoretical factor of about 3.
- "When does a slender column fail before it yields?" Euler buckling,
P_cr = pi^2*E*I/(K*L)^2, withKset by the end conditions.
Thermodynamics, fluids and heat transfer
Expect one energy balance and one "explain it" question. Name the system boundary first.
- "What happens to temperature across a throttling valve?" Enthalpy stays constant. An ideal gas keeps its temperature; liquid refrigerant partly flashes to vapor and drops to the saturation temperature at the lower pressure, which is why expansion valves work.
- "How can a heat pump have a COP above 1?" It moves heat instead of converting work into heat; the Carnot heating limit is
T_H/(T_H - T_C), with both temperatures in kelvin. - "Can insulating a thin wire increase heat loss?" Yes, below the critical radius (
k/hfor a cylinder), because added surface boosts convection more than the insulation cuts conduction.
GD&T interview questions
These test whether you read a drawing the way the shop and inspection lab will. Ask which standard the company uses (ASME Y14.5 at most US firms; some European-owned firms use ISO GPS) and answer in terms of how the part mates.
- "What is MMC, and where does bonus tolerance come from?" Maximum material condition is the smallest hole or the largest pin. With position at MMC, the tolerance grows by however far the produced feature departs from MMC.
- "Why position instead of plus-or-minus coordinates?" A cylindrical zone matches how a hole mates, and the circle drawn around a square zone has about 57% more area, so parts that would still assemble are no longer rejected.
- "Flatness versus parallelism?" Flatness is a form control with no datum; parallelism is an orientation control to a datum that also limits flatness.
- "Why does datum order matter?" On a prismatic part the primary datum contacts at three points, the secondary at two, the tertiary at one; reorder them and the part is fixtured and measured differently.
Material selection and failure analysis
- "Pick a material for a light, stiff part." Start from requirements, rank with an Ashby performance index (
E/rhofor a tie,E^(1/2)/rhofor a beam), then screen for cost, process, corrosion and fatigue. - "Will a stronger, heat-treated steel reduce this deflection?" No. Common steels share nearly the same elastic modulus, so heat treatment raises strength, not stiffness. Change the geometry. A favorite trap.
- "A shaft broke in service. How do you find out why?" Preserve the fracture surface, collect load history, then read it: beach marks point to fatigue, cup-and-cone with necking to ductile overload, and chevron marks point back to the origin of a brittle fracture. End with a corrective action such as a larger fillet radius or shot peening.
- "Have you used FMEA?" Know severity, occurrence and detection, and whether your project used a single RPN or the AIAG-VDA Action Priority tables many automotive suppliers now use.
- "How do you know your FEA result is right?" Run a mesh-convergence study, compare with a hand calculation, check reaction forces against applied loads, and distrust peak stresses at sharp corners or point loads that keep rising as the mesh refines.
How do I present a design project in an interview?
Tell one project, whether a capstone, an internship or a Formula SAE or Baja build, as an engineering argument.
- Problem and requirements: load, envelope, cost or schedule targets, with numbers you can defend.
- Concepts and the trade-off: two or three options and the decision matrix or calculation that picked one.
- Analysis: the hand calculation first, then CAD and FEA, with your boundary conditions.
- Build and test: what the test measured against the requirement, and what failed.
- Your role and what you would change: your own contribution, plus one design change and one process change.
For electromechanical work, our guide to hardware and embedded technical interviews uses a similar deep-dive structure.
Presenting capstone work without export-controlled detail
Most coursework is safe to discuss. The ITAR's definition of technical data, at 22 CFR 120.33(b), "does not include information concerning general scientific, mathematical, or engineering principles commonly taught in schools, colleges, and universities". The risk is sponsored work. If a company or a defense-funded lab sponsored your capstone, the sponsor agreement or the lab's technology control plan decides what you can show, so ask your faculty advisor or your university's export-control office before drawings, CAD files or test data go into a slide deck or online portfolio. Internship work is usually under a confidentiality agreement too.
Can international students get mechanical engineering jobs that involve ITAR?
Usually not for the controlled work itself. Under 22 CFR 120.62, an individual U.S. person is a lawful permanent resident or a "protected individual" (citizens, nationals, refugees and asylees, among others), so F-1, OPT, STEM OPT and H-1B holders are foreign persons. Releasing controlled data to a foreign person, even inside the US, counts as an export, called a deemed export. The Commerce Department's Bureau of Industry and Security, which runs the parallel Export Administration Regulations (EAR), defines it as "the sharing or release of controlled technology or source code to a foreign person". The State Department's Directorate of Defense Trade Controls (DDTC public portal) runs the ITAR. An employer can seek a license, but do not count on one for a new-grad hire.
Clearances are a separate wall. Under 32 CFR 117.10(k), cleared contractors must "make every effort to ensure that non-U.S. citizens are not employed in duties that may require access" to classified information, with exceptions only in "rare circumstances".
For form wording, see our guide to the "Are you a U.S. person?" export-control question; for the commercial-versus-defense split, see aerospace jobs and the ITAR citizenship wall. Whether a role needs a license is the employer's export-compliance team's call.
Job-ad decoder for F-1 mechanical engineers (as of 2026-11)
| Phrase in the posting | What it usually means | What to do on F-1, OPT or STEM OPT |
|---|---|---|
| "U.S. person as defined by ITAR" | Access to ITAR technical data | Skip unless the recruiter confirms the company seeks licenses for the role |
| "U.S. citizenship required" or "security clearance" | A cleared program | Skip; the clearance is the barrier |
| "May require access to export-controlled information" or "EAR" | Case by case; under the EAR it can depend on the technology and your citizenship | Apply and ask at the recruiter screen |
| "Without sponsorship now or in the future" | A sponsorship policy, not an export rule | You are authorized on OPT now; answer the future part honestly |
| Nothing about citizenship or export | Unknown | Ask once, early, in plain words |
Is mechanical engineering STEM OPT eligible?
Generally yes. ICE's SEVIS schools page says "DHS designates all CIP codes in the following four series to be STEM," and Engineering (series 14) is one; mechanical engineering is CIP 14.19. What counts is the CIP code on your Form I-20, not the degree's name. Engineering technology programs sit in series 15, which the list designates code by code rather than as a whole series, so check your code against the DHS STEM list and confirm with your DSO.
The USCIS STEM OPT page says the employer must "Be enrolled in E-Verify" and attest to the training relationship by "signing the Form I-983, Training Plan for STEM OPT Students." If your first OPT employer is not enrolled, you would need one that is before filing. See our explainer on the STEM OPT E-Verify employer requirement, and Study in the States on your part in Form I-983.
The continuing resolution (P.L. 119-103) runs through 2026-12-11, and the Congressional Research Service's overview of the CR lists E-Verify among the programs it extends "for the duration of the CR". If funding lapses, E-Verify could go offline as it did from 2025-10-01 in the 2025 shutdown; our guide to E-Verify after December 11 covers December start dates.
Before you invest in an interview: a six-step filter
- Read the posting on the company's careers portal for "ITAR", "EAR", "U.S. person", "export control" and "security clearance", and sort it with the decoder above.
- Search the employer in the E-Verify Employer Search on e-verify.gov. Its data is employer-reported and not every hiring site of a listed employer is enrolled, so confirm your site with HR.
- Check the CIP code on your Form I-20 against the DHS STEM Designated Degree Program List on ice.gov.
- Ask the recruiter at the first screen: "Does this role involve ITAR- or EAR-controlled work that requires a U.S. person? Is this site in E-Verify, and would you sign Form I-983 if I apply for STEM OPT?"
- Confirm your unemployment count with your DSO, since SEVIS holds the official number. Study in the States' unemployment counter page sets 90 days on post-completion OPT and 150 on STEM OPT, "which includes any days accrued while on post-completion OPT."
- Report a new employer once you start. Study in the States' OPT employer page says students on post-completion OPT can report employment in their SEVP Portal accounts, and anything not reported there "must be reported to their designated school official (DSO) within 10 days."
Worked example: an interview loop against the OPT clock
Say you finished an MS in mechanical engineering, your 12-month OPT EAD runs from 2026-09-22 to 2027-09-21, and no employer is reported. On 2026-11-01 you have accrued 41 unemployment days; your 90th would fall on 2026-12-20 (our arithmetic; your DSO's SEVIS record is the official count).
| Date | Event | Visa check |
|---|---|---|
| 2026-11-02 (Mon) | Apply to a commercial HVAC equipment maker; the ad is silent on export control | Ask early |
| 2026-11-04 (Wed) | Recruiter screen | Ask about ITAR/EAR, site E-Verify and Form I-983 |
| 2026-11-10 (Tue) | Phone screen: cantilever, throttling valve, one GD&T callout | None |
| 2026-11-19 (Thu) | Panel and capstone design review | Your own analysis, no sponsor data |
| 2026-11-24 (Tue) | Offer with a proposed start of 2027-01-04 | Past day 90 |
| 2026-11-25 (Wed) | You ask for a 2026-12-07 start and explain the OPT limit | You would start at day 76 |
| By 2026-12-17 | Report the employer (SEVP Portal, or your DSO) | Within 10 days of starting |
| 2027-06-23 to 2027-09-21 | STEM OPT I-765 window, up to 90 days before the EAD ends | The signed Form I-983 goes to your DSO first; file within 60 days of the DSO's recommendation |
If the employer cannot move the start date, talk to your DSO before you sign. Later, the STEM OPT I-765 costs $520 on paper or $470 online (G-1055, edition 10/26/26), and USCIS's processing-times tool showed 80% of F-1 student I-765s done within 5 months on 2026-11-01. If you file STEM OPT before your OPT EAD expires and it is still pending when the card runs out, USCIS's STEM OPT page says it "will automatically extend your employment authorization for 180 days", ending once USCIS decides the case. A STEM OPT application filed after the EAD expires gets no extension.
Which industries hire mechanical engineers on OPT?
Mostly industries whose products are not defense articles. Indeed Hiring Lab's October 2026 snapshot (2026-10-22) put its Engineering postings index near 145 and Production & Manufacturing near 124 (February 2020 = 100), against about 78 to 79 for Software Development; data-center postings were 147% above June 2024. These are broad categories, not mechanical engineering counts.
| Industry | What the technical rounds stress | Export-control exposure (check every posting) |
|---|---|---|
| Automotive, EV and batteries | DFMEA, tolerance stacks, thermal management | Low for most roles |
| Semiconductor equipment | Precision mechanisms, vacuum and thermal design | EAR questions possible; can depend on citizenship |
| Medical devices | Design verification, molded parts, tolerances | Low for most roles |
| HVAC, building systems, data centers | Thermodynamics, fluids, heat transfer | Low for most roles |
| Industrial automation and machinery | Mechanisms, fatigue, DFM | Low for most roles |
| Commercial aerospace | Structures, FEA, GD&T | Varies by program |
| Defense, space launch, classified work | The same fundamentals | Mostly closed to foreign persons |
Which employers in these sectors file H-1B petitions is covered in our guide to mechanical engineering jobs on OPT and H-1B.
Visa questions you will hear in the room
- "Will you require sponsorship?" Answer truthfully. You are authorized on OPT through your EAD end date, STEM OPT can add 24 months with an E-Verify employer that signs Form I-983, and staying longer would usually take H-1B sponsorship. H-1B selection has been wage-weighted since 2026-02-27, and FY2028 registration has not been announced.
- "Doesn't H-1B cost $100,000 now?" As of 2026-11-01 the payment is not being collected. The USCIS I-129 page (updated 2026-10-30) says a court "vacated agency guidance implementing the $100,000 payment requirement" and adds, "If this order is later lifted, DHS still plans to collect the payment." The proclamation itself still stands on paper. Even if collection resumed, changes of status that USCIS grants inside the US, the usual OPT-to-H-1B route, were never covered; a denied change of status would be. Leave the specifics to the employer's immigration attorney.
Common mistakes
- Preparing for weeks for a posting that says "U.S. person" or "clearance." A strong interview does not change that requirement.
- Ticking yes on the U.S.-person box because you hold an EAD. The EAD proves you may work; 22 CFR 120.62 decides who is a U.S. person, and F-1, OPT and H-1B status are not on that list. A false yes can surface at onboarding and end the job.
- Bringing a sponsor's drawings, CAD or test data to an interview or a public portfolio.
- Reciting formulas without a free-body diagram, units or a sanity check. The setup is what gets scored.
- Treating GD&T as symbol trivia instead of explaining how the part mates and is inspected.
- Accepting a start date past your unemployment limit without talking to your DSO.
- Assuming your first OPT employer will carry you to STEM OPT without confirming E-Verify and Form I-983.
Frequently asked questions
What technical questions are asked in mechanical engineering interviews?
New-grad loops usually test statics and strength of materials, thermodynamics and fluids, GD&T, material selection and failure analysis, then spend a long block on one CAD or FEA project. Interviewers weigh assumptions, units and sanity checks more than memorized formulas. The fundamentals are not export-controlled, because the ITAR definition of technical data excludes general engineering principles commonly taught in universities (22 CFR 120.33(b)); sponsored or employer project data can be.
Can international students get mechanical engineering jobs that involve ITAR?
Usually not for the controlled work itself. As of November 2026, F-1, OPT, STEM OPT and H-1B holders are not U.S. persons under 22 CFR 120.62, so a role that needs ITAR technical data needs an export license the employer may not seek. Many companies with defense programs also run commercial programs that hire international engineers, so read each posting and ask at the first recruiter screen.
Is mechanical engineering STEM OPT eligible?
Generally yes. ICE designates every CIP code in the Engineering series (14) as STEM, and mechanical engineering is CIP 14.19, but the CIP code on your Form I-20 is what counts, so confirm it with your DSO. As of November 1, 2026 the 24-month extension also requires an employer enrolled in E-Verify that signs Form I-983.
How do I present a design project in an interview?
Walk one project as problem, requirements, concepts, the trade-off you chose, analysis, test results, your personal role and what you would change. Bring your own sketches, hand calculations and normalized results, never a sponsor's drawings, and if a company or a defense-funded lab sponsored the work, ask your advisor or your university's export-control office what you may show.
Which industries hire mechanical engineers on OPT?
Automotive and EV, batteries, semiconductor equipment, medical devices, HVAC and data centers, industrial automation and commercial aerospace programs all hire mechanical engineers, often for roles with no U.S.-person requirement. Defense, space launch and classified work are mostly closed. Indeed's 2026-10-22 snapshot put its Engineering postings index near 145 (February 2020 = 100), against about 78 to 79 for Software Development.

How we checked this: we checked the regulations, agency pages and data sources listed above as of 2026-11-01, and labelled each policy item with its status on that date.
This is general information, not legal or tax advice. Your own I-20, EAD and notices govern; ask your DSO about OPT, STEM OPT and SEVIS, a licensed immigration attorney about H-1B and status strategy, and the employer's export-compliance team about whether a role is controlled.
If you want help building a target list of mechanical engineering roles open to F-1 candidates, and preparing for the loop once you land one, F1Jobs works with international engineers on exactly that.
