Does Eli Lilly Sponsor H-1B Visas? Research, Manufacturing and Tech Roles vs the No-Sponsor Postings

Lilly's FY2024 H-1B record leans toward new hires, yet many of its postdoc, sales and plant postings now rule out OPT, STEM OPT and H-1B support. Here is how to read each posting before you apply.

Does Eli Lilly sponsor H-1B? Yes, for some roles, and the public record is solid: the USCIS H-1B Employer Data Hub shows Eli Lilly and Company with 110 initial and 84 continuing H-1B approvals, and zero denials, in FY2024. But many of the US jobs Lilly is advertising now say the opposite. In postings we read on Lilly's careers site in early November 2026, sales, research, manufacturing and some tech roles stated that Lilly will not support F-1 CPT, OPT, STEM OPT or H-1B for that role. The postings show sponsorship is set role by role, so the posting is your first answer.

Status as of 2026-11-01: wage-weighted H-1B selection is in effect (since 2026-02-27). FY2028 registration is not announced; USCIS must give at least 30 days' notice. The $100,000 payment under Proclamation 11069 is in effect on paper but blocked: courts vacated the agency policies, and it is not collected. The $103,265 cap-subject fee and the OPT fee rule are proposed. The DOL PERM suspension announced 2026-10-08 does not name Lilly.

Does Eli Lilly sponsor H-1B? The short answer

Eli Lilly and Company sponsors H-1B workers: USCIS recorded 110 initial and 84 continuing approvals, with no denials, in FY2024. Sponsorship is set per posting, however. In early November 2026, many Lilly US postings, including every postdoc posting we opened, stated Lilly "will not provide support for or sponsor work authorization or visas for this role," listing F-1 OPT, STEM OPT and H-1B.

That 57% initial share is unusually high for an employer of Lilly's size. Long-time sponsors often show mostly continuing approvals, because every extension and amendment lands in that column. Our reading: Lilly's FY2024 row says it was bringing many people into new H-1B employment, not only renewing existing workers.

Three limits apply:

Why do some Lilly postings say no sponsorship?

Because sponsorship at Lilly is set role by role, and many roles are posted without it. We could not find a company-wide visa policy on Lilly's careers site, so the work-authorization paragraph in each posting is the policy for that job.

In the US postings we read in early November 2026, four versions appeared:

  1. The strict version. "Lilly will not provide support for or sponsor work authorization or visas for this role, including but not limited to F-1 CPT, F-1 OPT, F-1 STEM OPT, J-1, H-1B, TN, O-1, E-3, H-1B1, or L-1." It usually sits next to "Qualified applicants must be authorized to work in the United States on a full-time basis." Example: Pharmaceutical Sales, Territory Manager, Dermatology Specialty, Omaha (R-111455, posted 2026-10-13).
  2. The older version. "Lilly does not anticipate providing sponsorship for employment visa status (e.g., H-1B or TN status)." Example: Senior Scientist, TSMS, Indianapolis (R-110862).
  3. Internal only. "Lilly may provide support for or sponsor work authorization or visas for this role for internal applicants only." Example: Staff Product Manager, Catalyze360, San Francisco (R-112029).
  4. Silent. No statement either way. Examples: AI Scientist, Indianapolis (R-112865) and Senior Software Engineer/Tech Lead, Indianapolis (R-114013).

In the recent US postings we sampled, about half had no statement and most others used the strict version: one snapshot, not a Lilly policy.

Common misconception: "Lilly is a top pharma sponsor, so the no-sponsorship line is boilerplate." Correction: the strict version names F-1 CPT, OPT and STEM OPT as well as H-1B, so it reaches people who need no petition today. Our reading: if your current work authorization depends on a listed category, that posting is closed to you. Confirm with the recruiter.

Lilly does not say why a role excludes sponsorship. In our reading, employers weigh petition cost, budget and whether the job meets the specialty-occupation definition in 8 CFR 214.2(h)(4)(ii); field sales roles that accept any degree are a weak H-1B fit anywhere.

For how other drug makers handle this, see our pharmaceutical industry visa sponsorship guide. Quality, regulatory, supply-chain and tech candidates should also read biotech and pharma H-1B sponsors for non-research roles. If you are in biostatistics or clinical programming, compare Lilly with CROs in our clinical data scientist sponsorship guide.

Does Eli Lilly sponsor H-1B for scientists?

Sometimes, but not through its postdoc program as currently posted. All 13 postdoc postings we opened on 2026-11-02 used the strict version. Scientist roles were mixed, and advisor and director research postings were mostly silent. A PhD whose field matches the duties is a strong specialty-occupation case, but only if the requisition allows sponsorship.

Even then, Lilly is for-profit and generally cap-subject: a hire never counted against the cap needs lottery selection, unlike at a university. Universities are cap-exempt, including Indiana's Purdue University and Indiana University. Our chemistry PhD to industry guide covers sequencing an academic bridge and an industry move.

Does Lilly sponsor for manufacturing roles?

Rarely for production jobs. Operator and technician postings carried the strict or older version, and those roles often do not require the specific bachelor's degree H-1B needs. Engineering roles at manufacturing sites were split: some process and validation postings in Lebanon, Indiana (for example R-109171 and R-107886) used the strict version, while others, such as R-110719 in Pleasant Prairie, Wisconsin, were silent.

Does Eli Lilly hire OPT students? What to check

Lilly can hire people on OPT, but the strict version excludes F-1 CPT, OPT and STEM OPT by name.

If the application asks whether you will now or in the future require sponsorship, answer truthfully. On OPT with an H-1B ahead, the honest answer to "in the future" is usually yes.

How the H-1B lottery works for a Lilly offer

Because Lilly is cap-subject, an OPT hire never counted against the cap needs to be selected. Wage-weighted selection has been in effect since 2026-02-27: Level IV gets four entries, Level III three, Level II two and Level I one, based on the highest OEWS wage level the offered wage equals or exceeds for the occupation in the area of employment. The FY2027 cap was reached on 2026-07-17 with no second selection. FY2028 registration is not announced; watch the USCIS registration page and treat March 2027 as an expectation, not a date.

If you already hold cap-subject H-1B status, a move to Lilly is normally a change-of-employer petition, not a lottery entry, but a strict-version posting rules that out because it lists H-1B.

Demand context: BLS reported on 2026-10-02 that health care added 17,000 jobs in September 2026 while total payrolls rose 29,000. That series counts care providers, not drug makers, so read it as a signal about Lilly's market, not its hiring. The October report is scheduled for 2026-11-06 (check bls.gov after that date).

The worksite matters. Besides Indianapolis headquarters, postings we read listed Lebanon (Indiana), Concord (North Carolina), Houston, Richmond (Virginia), Pleasant Prairie (Wisconsin), Boston and California sites. The worksite area sets the wage levels, and so your entries. Our Indianapolis and Indiana H-1B jobs guide maps other sponsors nearby.

Does Eli Lilly sponsor green cards?

PERM is a separate decision from H-1B, and we quote no Lilly PERM count. Search the DOL PERM disclosure files on the OFLC performance data page (latest public file: FY2026 through Q3), or follow our guide on checking whether a company sponsors green cards.

A step-by-step plan for a Lilly application

  1. Search the USCIS H-1B Employer Data Hub for every Lilly entity name on your offer, separating initial from continuing approvals.
  2. Open each requisition on careers.lilly.com and find its work-authorization paragraph.
  3. Sort it as strict, older, internal only or silent, and drop strict ones if your authorization depends on CPT, OPT, STEM OPT or H-1B.
  4. Answer the application's sponsorship questions truthfully, including "in the future".
  5. Email the recruiter early on silent postings: is the role approved for sponsorship, and which entity would employ you?
  6. Check the hiring entity in the E-Verify employer search if you need STEM OPT.
  7. Ask your DSO about OPT dates, unemployment days and the I-983, and a licensed immigration attorney about petition strategy or your eligibility.
  8. Raise PERM support as a separate question once an offer is likely.

Frequently asked questions

Does Eli Lilly sponsor H-1B for scientists?

Sometimes. Eli Lilly and Company had 110 initial and 84 continuing H-1B approvals, with no denials, in FY2024, per the USCIS H-1B Employer Data Hub. But all 13 Lilly postdoc postings we opened on 2026-11-02, and several scientist postings, ruled out support for F-1 OPT, STEM OPT and H-1B, so check each requisition.

Why do some Lilly postings say no sponsorship?

Lilly's postings show sponsorship varies role by role, and Lilly does not publish its reasons. As of early November 2026, many US postings say Lilly will not provide support for or sponsor work authorization or visas for the role, naming F-1 CPT, OPT, STEM OPT and H-1B. Treat that line as the answer for that job.

Does Eli Lilly hire OPT students?

Yes for some roles, but many Lilly US postings in early November 2026 exclude F-1 CPT, F-1 OPT and F-1 STEM OPT by name. Target postings that are silent or only rule out H-1B or TN sponsorship, and confirm with the recruiter. STEM OPT also needs an E-Verify employer that signs Form I-983.

Does Eli Lilly sponsor green cards?

PERM is a separate decision from H-1B, and this guide quotes no Lilly PERM count; check the DOL PERM disclosure files, which run through FY2026 Q3. Lilly is not among the eight employers in the DOL PERM suspension announced 2026-10-08, and PERM rules are unchanged as of 2026-11-01.

Does Lilly sponsor for manufacturing roles?

Rarely for production jobs. Operator and technician postings we read in early November 2026 carried no-sponsorship language, and those roles often fail the H-1B specialty-occupation standard. Engineering roles at manufacturing sites were mixed, so read each requisition.

How we checked this: we used USCIS, Federal Register, DOL, BLS and SEVP pages as of 2026-11-01, Lilly's FY2024 row from the USCIS H-1B Employer Data Hub extract our employer pages use, and Lilly's own US postings, read on 2026-11-02.

This is general information, not legal or tax advice; your own I-20, EAD, I-94 and notices, your DSO and a licensed immigration attorney govern your case.

Lilly is a realistic target when the requisition allows sponsorship and your degree matches the duties. If you want help building a list of pharma, biotech and Indiana employers whose postings actually support OPT and H-1B candidates, F1Jobs can work through it with you.
