Does Wells Fargo Sponsor H-1B Visas? Tech, Risk and Analytics Roles for OPT Candidates

Wells Fargo files H-1B petitions, but sponsorship is decided posting by posting. Here is how to find the roles that qualify and verify the data yourself.

Does Wells Fargo sponsor H-1B visas? Yes, for some roles, but not for every posting. Wells Fargo appears as an H-1B employer in public Department of Labor and USCIS data, and at large banks the sponsored roles tend to sit in technology, quantitative risk and analytics. Sponsorship is decided posting by posting, not company-wide. If a posting says sponsorship is not available, take that at face value for that role. If you are on OPT or STEM OPT, your job is to find the roles where the bank already sponsors, verify that history yourself, and understand how the 2026 rule changes affect a cap-subject employer like Wells Fargo.

Status line, as of 2026-10-14. Wage-weighted H-1B selection is in effect (since 2026-02-27). The $100,000 H-1B fee is blocked by two courts, even though Proclamation 11069 extended it on paper to 2027-09-21. EO 14431 (layoffs as an H-1B factor) is in effect as a directive with no implementing guidance. The $103,265 cap-subject fee is proposed.

Does Wells Fargo sponsor H-1B? What the public data can and cannot tell you

There are two free, official sources, and you should use both.

Two cautions. An LCA is not a petition, and a petition is not an approval, so LCA and position counts run far higher than approvals. And a company-wide total tells you little. What matters is whether Wells Fargo has filed LCAs for your job family, in your target city, at a wage level you could plausibly be offered. Our guide on how to check if a company sponsors H-1B walks through the search filters step by step.

Also watch for the employer name. Large banks can file under more than one legal entity, so search every name variant rather than one spelling. Contractors placed at Wells Fargo through staffing vendors appear under the vendor's name, not Wells Fargo's. If a "Wells Fargo" role comes to you through a third-party firm, your H-1B employer would be that firm.

Where Wells Fargo's sponsored roles tend to cluster

Large US banks sponsor where the work meets the H-1B specialty occupation standard: a role that normally requires at least a bachelor's degree in a specific, related field. At Wells Fargo that points to three families.

Role familyTypical titles in postingsDegrees that usually fitNotes for visa candidates
TechnologySoftware Engineer, Senior/Lead Software Engineer, Data Engineer, Cloud/Platform Engineer, Cybersecurity EngineerCS, software engineering, computer engineering, ISDegree-specific duties; these degrees are often STEM-designated, which matters for the STEM OPT extension
RiskModel Risk/Model Validation, Credit Risk, Market Risk, Operational Risk AnalystStatistics, math, financial engineering, economics (quantitative)Generalist "risk" titles with vague degree language are harder to sponsor
Analytics and quantQuantitative Analytics Specialist, Data Scientist, Decision Science or Analytics ConsultantStatistics, data science, operations research, applied mathWage level depends heavily on title seniority and worksite

Wells Fargo has large hubs in several metros, including Charlotte, Minneapolis, Des Moines, the Dallas area and Phoenix, so pull LCAs city by city rather than nationally. Charlotte is the hub most new grads ask about; see our Charlotte banking and fintech H-1B guide for how Bank of America, Truist and the fintech layer compare.

Roles that rarely support H-1B at any bank include branch banking, tellers and general operations seats where any degree is acceptable, because they struggle to meet the specialty-occupation standard.

How the 2026 rules change the math at a cap-subject bank

Wells Fargo is a cap-subject employer. Unlike a university or a nonprofit research organization, it cannot file an H-1B for you outside the annual lottery unless you were already counted against the cap. Four rule changes shape your odds and the employer's willingness to file. Status as of October 2026:

RuleOld positionPosition as of October 2026 (checked 2026-10-14)What to do differently
H-1B selectionRandom lottery, every registration weighted equallyIn effect since 2026-02-27: weighted by wage level (Level IV x4, III x3, II x2, I x1). $103,265 cap-subject feeDid not existProposed; comments closed 2026-09-24; no final ruleAsk whether the employer's planning for new cap filings assumes it could become final
Employer layoffsNot a stated factorEO 14431 in effect as a directive (signed 2026-09-18): agencies "take into account" layoffs, with no automatic denial and no guidance yetAsk whether the team has had recent reductions; nobody can tell you yet how agencies will weigh them

The wage-weighted lottery and your title

Under the weighted selection rule (Federal Register, 2025-12-29), a registration at Level IV gets four entries and a Level I registration gets one. The level is set by comparing the offered wage with the prevailing wages for the role's SOC code and the worksite's area. That means the same base salary can land at a different level in Charlotte than in New York, where area wage thresholds are typically higher, and a "Senior" title with genuinely senior duties usually maps higher than an entry analyst title. You can look up the levels yourself in the DOL FLAG wage search. Our explainer on the wage-weighted lottery mechanism covers the arithmetic. The employer and its counsel choose the SOC code from the actual duties; the LCA is a sworn attestation, not something to engineer.

EO 14431 and bank headcount

EO 14431 (Federal Register) tells agencies to consider whether a sponsor engaged in layoffs in the previous year that affected "similarly situated" US workers. It defines neither term, creates no automatic denial, and had no implementing guidance as of 2026-10-13. It also directs DOL to begin reviewing previously filed LCAs within 30 days of signing (around 2026-10-18). Treat it as an open question for any large employer, not a verdict on Wells Fargo.

What the PERM suspension does and does not touch

On 2026-10-08 DOL announced it would stop accepting and processing PERM labor certifications for eight named employers: Microsoft, Adobe, Cognizant, Infosys, TCS, Wipro, HCL and Capgemini. Wells Fargo is not on that list. But banks use IT vendors heavily. If you would work at Wells Fargo as a contractor employed by one of those eight firms, that vendor's PERM (green card) filings are suspended. H-1B petitions and H-1B status are untouched by that action.

From OPT to a Wells Fargo H-1B: a step-by-step timeline

This is how the process generally runs; your own dates come from your I-20, EAD and the employer's counsel.

  1. Before you apply. Pull Wells Fargo's recent LCAs for your target title and city. Confirm the posting does not say sponsorship is unavailable.
  2. During interviews. Answer the sponsorship question truthfully. If you are on post-completion OPT, you have up to 90 days of unemployment; with the 24-month STEM extension, the aggregate limit is 150 days (SEVP guidance).
  3. At the offer. Ask three things in writing: whether the role is approved for H-1B registration, whether the company plans a STEM OPT extension with you, and what its green card policy is.
  4. STEM OPT, if eligible. The employer must be enrolled in E-Verify and complete Form I-983 with you. Check enrollment yourself in the E-Verify employer search, and see our note on the STEM OPT E-Verify requirement. File timing questions go to your DSO.
  5. Registration season. The employer registers you in the electronic lottery. FY2028 registration dates have not been announced; March 2027 is an expectation only. Watch the USCIS registration page.
  6. If selected. Counsel files the I-129 petition with a certified LCA. If your OPT would expire before the H-1B start date, cap-gap rules may extend your F-1 status and work authorization while a timely change-of-status petition is pending; see our cap-gap explainer and confirm your own eligibility with your DSO.
  7. If not selected. You keep working on OPT or STEM OPT while it lasts and may be registered again the following year if the employer agrees. Unselected registrations do not carry over.

If the job requires travel

Do not travel while an OPT or STEM OPT I-765 is pending; raise any trip with your DSO first. For a later H-1B stamp, apply in your country of nationality or legal residence (third-country stamping ended 2025-09-06), expect an in-person interview (the "dropbox" waiver is gone), and check the travel.state.gov wait-times page. Stateside renewal is not back. Nationals of the 39 countries under Proclamation 10998 (in effect since 2026-01-01) should see an immigration attorney before any trip.

How Wells Fargo compares with other big banks

Every large bank sponsors some roles and declines others, and the pattern shifts year to year. Our JPMorgan Chase H-1B sponsorship guide uses the same verification method, so you can compare the two banks with identical filters, and our Bank of America H-1B guide covers the other large Charlotte employer. Concentrating on one bank is how candidates burn OPT unemployment days.

Common mistakes

Frequently asked questions

Does Wells Fargo sponsor H-1B visas for OPT students?

Yes, for some roles. Wells Fargo appears as an H-1B employer in public DOL and USCIS data, and at large banks sponsored roles tend to sit in technology, quantitative risk and analytics. Sponsorship is decided posting by posting, so read each job description and confirm with the recruiter before you invest weeks in an interview loop.

Does Wells Fargo hire candidates on OPT and STEM OPT?

It depends on the posting. An OPT or STEM OPT EAD is valid work authorization, but each posting sets its own rules on current and future sponsorship. If you plan to use the 24-month STEM extension, the employer must be enrolled in E-Verify and sign a Form I-983 training plan with you. Check enrollment in the public E-Verify employer search and ask your DSO how the extension fits your timeline.

How can I check Wells Fargo's H-1B history myself?

Search the USCIS H-1B Employer Data Hub, which covers FY2009 through FY2026 Q3, and the DOL OFLC LCA disclosure files. Look at the job titles, SOC codes, worksite cities and wage levels on recent certified LCAs rather than a single total. Treat any ranking that claims FY2026 Q4 data as unreliable.

Does the $100,000 H-1B fee affect a Wells Fargo offer?

As of October 2026 the fee is not being collected. Proclamation 11069 extended the restriction on paper to 2027-09-21, but two federal courts have blocked it, and USCIS says DHS still plans to collect the fee if the court order is lifted. A separate proposed fee of $103,265 on cap-subject petitions has no final rule, so ask the employer's immigration counsel how they are planning for both.

Does Wells Fargo sponsor green cards?

Many large employers file PERM labor certifications for some sponsored employees, and Wells Fargo is not one of the eight employers named in the DOL PERM suspension announced 2026-10-08. Green card policy usually depends on role, level and tenure, so ask about it at the offer stage. DOL PERM disclosure data shows past filings, not a promise for your role.
