Michigan H-1B Jobs: Ford, GM, the University of Michigan and the State's Top Sponsors for OPT Graduates
Michigan's H-1B filings split between Detroit's automakers, two big research universities and a Troy-to-Novi belt of IT and engineering services firms, and each path works differently from OPT.

Part of our guide to H-1B jobs by state and city.
H-1B jobs in Michigan come from three employer groups: automakers and their suppliers in Dearborn, Detroit and Auburn Hills; cap-exempt research universities in Ann Arbor, East Lansing and Detroit; and a dense belt of IT, engineering and staffing firms in Troy, Southfield, Novi and Farmington Hills. In the USCIS Employer Data Hub extract behind our Michigan sponsor list, 204 Michigan employers account for 20,326 H-1B petitions decided across FY2024 to FY2026 (FY2026 partial). Ford Motor Company (1,856), General Motors (1,554) and the University of Michigan (1,125) lead. Which group your offer comes from shapes your lottery odds, your cap-gap protection and your risk between projects.
Status as of 2026-11-01. In effect: wage-weighted H-1B selection (since 2026-02-27); the 90-day OPT and 150-day STEM OPT unemployment limits; the STEM OPT 180-day automatic extension for timely filers. Not announced: FY2028 H-1B registration. In effect on paper, fee blocked: Proclamation 11069's $100,000 H-1B payment is not being collected, and never covered an F-1 to H-1B change of status granted inside the US. In effect, but not an H-1B action: DOL's 2026-10-08 PERM suspension of eight employers, including HCL, Cognizant, Infosys and TCS. Proposed: ending the discretionary 60-day grace period for H-1B and other workers (comments close 2026-11-10); the current 60 days still applies.
H-1B jobs in Michigan: the short answer
Michigan's H-1B sponsors are mostly automakers and suppliers, research universities, and IT, engineering and staffing firms. Ford, GM and the University of Michigan file the most petitions in the USCIS Employer Data Hub extract we use. Universities are cap-exempt and skip the lottery; automaker and consulting roles go through wage-weighted selection, in effect since 2026-02-27.
Search beyond Detroit. Troy's city page shows 42 employers and 4,359 petitions, more than Detroit's 19 employers and 3,312, and Farmington Hills adds 27 and 1,928. Our Metro Detroit guide goes suburb by suburb.
Which companies sponsor H-1B in Michigan?
Largest Michigan H-1B filers, petitions decided FY2024 to FY2026 (FY2026 partial), USCIS Employer Data Hub extract, as of 2026-11
| State rank | Employer | City (Hub mailing address) | Type | Petitions decided |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Ford Motor Company | Dearborn | Automaker | 1,856 |
| 2 | General Motors | Detroit | Automaker | 1,554 |
| 3 | University of Michigan | Ann Arbor | University (cap-exempt) | 1,125 |
| 4 | Atos Syntel | Troy | IT services | 951 |
| 5 | HTC Global Services | Troy | IT services | 647 |
| 6 | FCA US | Auburn Hills | Automaker | 517 |
| 7 | HCL Global Systems | Farmington Hills | IT services | 492 |
| 8 | Populus Group | Troy | Administrative and support services (Hub industry) | 466 |
| 9 | Michigan State University | East Lansing | University (cap-exempt) | 316 |
| 10 | KPIT Technologies | Novi | Automotive software services | 280 |
| 11 | Robert Bosch | Farmington Hills | Supplier | 254 |
| 21 | Stryker | Portage | Medical devices | 190 |
| 33 | Whirlpool | Benton Harbor | Appliances | 115 |
The 11 largest filers hold 8,458 petitions, about 42% of the state total (our arithmetic): four manufacturers with 4,181, five services firms with 2,836 and two universities with 1,441. Stryker, West Michigan's largest filer, and Whirlpool are added as West Michigan anchors. The other 193 employers hold about 58%, including Akkodis, Tata Technologies, United Wholesale Mortgage, Rocket Mortgage and Ally Bank, each larger than Stryker.
Do not read a city as a worksite. USCIS places each employer in the state "indicated in the mailing address of the employer," which "is not necessarily the beneficiary(ies) work location," per the Hub's methodology page. A Troy consultancy's count can include people placed with clients in other states (our reading).
Who hires new graduates? Read the initial-vs-continuing split
Totals mix new hires with renewals. In our reading of the Hub's glossary, initial approvals are "new employment" petitions, including a worker moving into H-1B from "a different nonimmigrant classification" such as F-1; continuing approvals cover people who already hold H-1B status. For an OPT graduate, read the initial column.
FY2024 approvals by type, selected Michigan employers (latest full fiscal year in our extract), as of 2026-11
| Employer | Initial approvals | Continuing approvals | Share continuing (our arithmetic) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Ford Motor Company | 66 | 607 | 90% |
| General Motors | 61 | 407 | 87% |
| FCA US | 15 | 138 | 90% |
| University of Michigan | 240 | 251 | 51% |
| Michigan State University | 85 | 57 | 40% |
| HTC Global Services | 85 | 235 | 73% |
| Populus Group | 58 | 148 | 72% |
| HCL Global Systems | 17 | 176 | 91% |
| Atos Syntel | 26 | 516 | 95% |
The University of Michigan's 240 initial approvals in FY2024 exceed Ford's and GM's combined 127.
Do Ford and GM sponsor H-1B for new graduates?
Yes, in small numbers next to their totals. Both are cap-subject, so a new H-1B for an OPT hire goes through registration unless you were previously counted against the cap; the employer typically registers you while you work there on OPT or STEM OPT, often after an internship or co-op converts to a full-time role. FY2028 dates are not announced as of 2026-11-01.
Under the weighted selection final rule, in effect since 2026-02-27, a Level IV registration is entered four times and a Level I once; STEM OPT can give you more seasons to try. Search every legal name: Ford Motor Credit Company files separately, and the extract also lists General Motors Company and GM Personnel Service Inc. Our guides to Ford and General Motors go entity by entity, and the automotive and EV sponsorship guide covers the industry nationally.
Michigan H-1B sponsors by region
Detroit and Dearborn: automaker headquarters
GM files from Detroit and Ford from Dearborn. Detroit's city page also lists Rocket Mortgage, Ally Bank, Henry Ford Health, Wayne State University, Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan and Tata Technologies, so data, software and finance candidates have options beyond vehicle engineering.
Troy, Southfield, Novi and Farmington Hills: the services belt
Atos Syntel, HTC Global Services and Populus Group file from Troy; HCL Global Systems and Bosch from Farmington Hills; KPIT and Miracle Software Systems from Novi; Epitec, Altimetrik and Apexon from Southfield; FCA US, Akkodis and Magna Electronics from nearby Auburn Hills. Many place engineers on client projects at automakers and suppliers, so ask early whose site you would work at.
Ann Arbor and East Lansing: university towns
The University of Michigan accounts for most of Ann Arbor's filing, with Domino's Pizza and May Mobility among the few other filers, and Michigan State dominates East Lansing. Both suit research, lab and campus IT roles more than private-sector product jobs.
West Michigan and beyond
Stryker files from Portage, Whirlpool from Benton Harbor, LG Energy Solution Michigan from Holland and Dow Chemical from Midland; Grand Rapids filers include Dematic, Meijer, Corewell Health and Van Andel Research Institute. These smaller pools are mostly direct corporate, health or research roles.
Are Troy and Southfield IT consulting firms safe OPT employers?
No city or business model makes an employer safe or unsafe. With a consulting firm, ask who trains you, where you work and what happens between projects.
For STEM OPT, USCIS's STEM OPT page says the employer must be enrolled in E-Verify, sign Form I-983 and keep a "bona fide employer-employee relationship" with you. Staffing and consulting firms qualify only if they provide the training themselves: "a STEM OPT employer may not assign, or otherwise delegate, its training responsibilities to a non-employer third party," such as its client. Client-site training is allowed only if the firm still meets those obligations.
For bench time, each day without employer information counts: 90 days on post-completion OPT and 150 on STEM OPT, including days used on post-completion OPT, per the SEVIS unemployment counter guidance. Once you are on H-1B, today's discretionary 60-day grace period still applies; ending it is only a proposal.
For the future, "Reforming the H-1B Nonimmigrant Visa Classification Program" (RIN 1615-AD00) has been under OIRA review since 2026-08-24. Its agenda abstract mentions "increasing oversight over third party placements," but no text is public, so nothing in it applies yet.
See our guides to checking that an OPT employer is real and in-house vs staffing-agency sponsorship.
Common misconception: "HCL is on DOL's suspension list, so HCL Global Systems in Farmington Hills can't sponsor my H-1B." Correction: DOL's 2026-10-08 action suspends PERM labor certification, the green-card step, for eight named employers, with no written notice or end date as of 2026-11-01. Mayer Brown's analysis says it "does not suspend any employer from the H-1B program." A similar name is also not the same legal entity; compare exact legal names on the Hub and your offer letter.
Which Michigan universities sponsor H-1B?
The University of Michigan (1,125 petitions decided across FY2024 to FY2026), Michigan State University (316) and Wayne State University (148) are the largest university filers in our extract; Grand Valley State, Michigan Technological, Oakland and Western Michigan universities file in smaller numbers. As institutions of higher education, they are cap-exempt under 8 CFR 214.2(h)(8)(iii)(F): no lottery, and a petition can be filed at any time of year.
The catch is timing. Cap-gap covers only cap-subject petitions, so unless approval arrives before your OPT EAD ends, you may have to stop working while the petition is pending; confirm the plan with the university's immigration office and your DSO. A later move to a private employer makes you cap-subject unless you were previously counted against the cap. RIN 1615-AD00 would revise cap-exemption eligibility; nothing is published.

How to target Michigan H-1B sponsors from OPT
- Open the Michigan sponsor list and group your targets by region and employer type.
- Search the USCIS H-1B Employer Data Hub by each exact legal name and compare FY2024 initial and continuing approvals.
- Check DOL's OFLC disclosure data (latest files FY2026 Q3) for each employer's LCA job titles and Michigan worksites, using our LCA and Hub target-list method.
- Look up the prevailing wage for your occupation and county in DOL's FLAG wage search; the same salary can map to a different wage level in Detroit than in a higher-wage metro (our reading).
- Ask each recruiter: cap-exempt or cap-subject? Do you register OPT hires, and at what wage level? Who supervises my training, and what happens between projects? For STEM OPT, ask for the E-Verify company ID.
- Review DOL's H-1B debarment list, dated "effective as of October 1, 2026," before accepting a consulting offer.
- Confirm with your DSO how a new employer, a client-site placement or a gap between projects is reported in SEVIS.
- Take cap-exemption, wage-level and filing-timing questions to a licensed immigration attorney, usually the employer's counsel.
Is Michigan a good state for international students after graduation?
For engineering, automotive, university research and IT services, yes: 204 employers filed in our three-year extract. The weak spot is consumer-tech product roles; none of the 11 largest Michigan filers is that kind of company (our reading).
Michigan's active F-1 and M-1 SEVIS records fell 10.1% from October 2025 to October 2026, against 7.1% nationally (our sums of the October 2026 SEVIS data). That measures student records, not jobs.
One timing risk for STEM OPT hires: E-Verify runs with the stopgap funding law through 2026-12-11, and in the 2025 lapse it went offline from 2025-10-01 for about a week. That matters only if Congress does not pass funding by 2026-12-11.
Common mistakes
- Reading petition totals as openings. Totals include renewals and denials, and one company can file under several legal names.
- Assuming cap-gap covers a university offer. It covers only cap-subject petitions, so a late university filing can leave a gap.
- Skipping the E-Verify and I-983 check on a STEM OPT consulting role. Both are conditions of the extension.
- Letting bench days pile up. Days without employer information count toward the 90-day or 150-day limit.
Frequently asked questions
Which companies sponsor H-1B in Michigan?
In the USCIS H-1B Employer Data Hub extract behind our company pages (FY2024 to FY2026, FY2026 partial), the largest Michigan filers are Ford Motor Company (1,856 petitions decided), General Motors (1,554), the University of Michigan (1,125), Atos Syntel (951) and HTC Global Services (647), then FCA US, HCL Global Systems, Populus Group and Michigan State University. These are past filings, not current openings.
Do Ford and GM sponsor H-1B for new graduates?
Yes, but most of their petitions are for people who already hold H-1B status. In FY2024 Ford had 66 initial approvals against 607 continuing and GM had 61 against 407. For an F-1 graduate the usual route is an internship or OPT role first, then a cap registration under wage-weighted selection, in effect since 2026-02-27.
Is Michigan a good state for international students after graduation?
For engineering, automotive, university research and IT services, yes. In our extract, 204 Michigan employers account for 20,326 petitions decided across FY2024 to FY2026. Are Troy and Southfield IT consulting firms safe OPT employers?
No location makes an employer safe or unsafe. For STEM OPT, the employer must be enrolled in E-Verify, sign Form I-983 and keep its own training responsibilities even at a client site. Check the firm's Hub record, its LCAs and DOL's H-1B debarment list, and ask your DSO how a placement is reported in SEVIS.

How we checked this: employer, city and FY2024 approval counts come from the USCIS H-1B Employer Data Hub extract behind our company pages, which has a partial FY2026; the live Hub now says it runs through FY2026 quarter 4, so its current totals can be higher than ours. Rules and status were read on USCIS, SEVP, DOL, reginfo.gov and the Federal Register on 2026-11-01. This is general information, not legal or tax advice; your own I-20, EAD and I-797, and the advice of your DSO or a licensed immigration attorney, govern your case.
