OPT Premium Processing: Is $1,780 Worth It for Initial OPT, and When Does Upgrading a Pending Case Make Sense?

Premium processing buys speed, not approval. Here is how to decide whether $1,780 makes sense for your initial OPT, and how to upgrade a case that is already pending.

The short answer: the OPT premium processing fee is $1,780 as of October 2026, paid on top of your regular I-765 filing fee. For initial OPT it tends to pay off mainly when you have a real job offer whose start date lands before your case would likely be decided on regular processing. With no offer yet, or a requested start date still months away, premium processing for OPT often buys less than it looks, and in one common situation it can start your unemployment clock sooner. Upgrading a pending case is allowed, and the math is the same.

You filed your I-765, the status page has not moved, and a recruiter just asked when you can start. Here is what the fee buys, what it does not, and a framework to run on your own dates before you talk to your DSO.

What the OPT premium processing fee actually buys

Premium processing is a service you request with Form I-907, Request for Premium Processing Service. USCIS lists three eligible F-1 categories, pre-completion OPT (c)(3)(A), post-completion OPT (c)(3)(B) and the STEM extension (c)(3)(C), and commits to take action within the timeframe on its premium processing page. The clock starts when USCIS receives a properly completed I-907 at the correct address. Check that page for the current timeframe.

Three points matter more than the headline speed:

  1. "Action" is not "approval." Action can mean an approval, a denial, or a Request for Evidence (RFE). Premium processing does not change the standard USCIS applies. A weak or error-filled application gets a faster RFE or denial.
  2. An RFE stops the clock. USCIS says a new premium period starts only when it receives your response. A case with an RFE can take much longer than the headline timeframe, and you will have paid $1,780 either way.
  3. The card still has to be made and mailed. Premium processing covers the decision. You cannot start OPT employment until you have the card and the start date printed on it has arrived. The EAD delay action plan covers what to do if the card stalls after approval.

If USCIS misses the premium timeframe, its premium processing page says it will refund the premium fee.

OPT premium processing time vs. regular processing: how to compare honestly

The real question is "how much earlier would I get a decision, and is that gap worth $1,780 to me?" Work it out like this:

  1. Find your regular-processing estimate. Open the USCIS processing times tool, select Form I-765 and your category, and note the posted time. Community reports say averages rose to 4-5 months by late September 2026. That is reported, not verified against USCIS, so use the live number. The I-765 processing time guide explains how to read the tool.
  2. Count from your receipt date, not today. Your I-797C shows the date USCIS received your I-765. Add the posted time to get a rough "regular decision" date.
  3. Add card production and mailing. Leave a buffer after either decision date.
  4. Write down three other dates: the OPT start date you requested on the I-765, your program end date, and your offer's start date if you have one.
  5. Compare. Premium processing is valuable only to the extent that it moves your work-ready date earlier than a date that matters, usually the offer start date.

If the regular decision date already falls before your requested OPT start date, premium buys almost nothing. USCIS will not set a start date earlier than the one you requested.

When premium processing for OPT tends to make sense

This is a framework, not a recommendation for your case; your DSO can check your dates against SEVIS.

Your situationHow much premium usually buysWhy
Signed offer, start date falls before your projected regular decisionMostEvery week of delay is a week you cannot work, and some employers will not hold a start date indefinitely
Signed offer, start date comfortably after your projected regular decisionLittleYou would likely have the card in time anyway; $1,780 buys peace of mind, not days
Filed early, requested start date still months awayLittle to noneA faster decision does not move your EAD start date earlier than the date you asked for
No offer yet, requested start date already passedMixed, possibly negativeFaster approval puts a start date on your card sooner, and your 90-day unemployment clock runs from that date
Pending case with a known problem (wrong category, missing DSO recommendation)LowPremium only speeds up the RFE or denial. Fix the problem with your DSO first

The unemployment-clock trap

On post-completion OPT you have 90 days of permitted unemployment (150 days in aggregate if you later add the 24-month STEM extension). Those days are counted from the start date on your EAD, not from graduation and not from the day you filed.

While your I-765 is pending past your requested start date, the clock is not running, because you have no EAD validity yet. Many DSO offices explain that when approval comes after the requested start date, the card's validity begins on the approval date instead. So paying to speed up approval with no job lined up can start your unemployment clock earlier. Ask your DSO how a late approval would affect your dates.

That does not make waiting "safe"; a long wait still blocks any start date inside it. Premium processing has real value once there is something on the other side of the approval. If you are still searching, the OPT $1,780 planning guide walks through budgeting the fee so the decision is not forced at the last minute.

Upgrading a pending OPT case to premium: step by step

You can request premium processing after filing, while the I-765 is pending, often once an offer arrives:

  1. Find your receipt number. It is on your I-797C notice for the I-765 (three letters followed by ten digits).
  2. Check the case status first. If an RFE was already issued or a decision is in progress, deal with that before spending $1,780.
  3. Confirm your I-20 and dates with your DSO. Make sure the OPT recommendation in SEVIS matches the category and dates on your I-765. Premium processing will not fix a mismatch.
  4. File Form I-907. G-1055 lists both a paper and an online filing fee for the OPT I-907. The I-907 page explains when you can file online, where F-1 students mail a paper request, and that an upgrade should include only one I-907 for the previously filed case.
  5. Pay $1,780. Confirm the amount against the current G-1055 edition the same day.
  6. Watch for the I-907 receipt and keep it with your I-765 notice.
  7. Answer any RFE fast and completely. No new premium period starts until USCIS receives your response.
  8. Plan for card delivery. Approval is not the card; keep your start date flexible by your mailing buffer.

The proposed fee would be paid by the school before a DSO's OPT recommendation (DHS says schools may pass the cost on), and only for recommendations dated at least 60 days after a final rule. Read it in the Federal Register or on Study in the States, and see who would pay the proposed $70,000.

Common mistakes

Who to ask

Your DSO handles your I-20, SEVIS record, OPT recommendation, category, start date, unemployment days and what a late approval does to your dates. A licensed immigration attorney handles prior status problems, a denial, a complicated RFE, or anything tied to a later H-1B or green-card plan. The roles are not interchangeable. This post explains the process; it does not tell you whether to file an I-907.

Frequently asked questions

How much is the OPT premium processing fee in October 2026?

The OPT premium processing fee is $1,780 for an initial OPT or STEM OPT Form I-765, per USCIS fee schedule G-1055 (edition 10/07/26). It has been unchanged since 2026-03-01 and is paid on top of the regular I-765 filing fee. The OPT fees proposal published 2026-10-08 would not change it.

Does premium processing make my OPT approval more likely?

No. Premium processing only commits USCIS to take action on your case within its published premium timeframe. That action can be an approval, a denial or a Request for Evidence, and after an RFE a new premium period starts only when USCIS receives your response.

Can I upgrade a pending OPT application to premium processing?

Yes. While your I-765 is still pending you can file Form I-907 that references the receipt number on your I-797C notice and pay the $1,780 fee. The fee schedule lists both paper and online filing, and the I-907 page explains how to request an upgrade for a case already pending.

Is OPT premium processing worth it if I do not have a job offer yet?

It is less clear-cut. A faster approval lets you start work sooner, but your 90-day post-completion OPT unemployment clock runs from the start date on your EAD, so an approval with no job lined up can start that clock earlier. Map your dates with your DSO before paying.

Can I travel outside the US while my premium OPT application is pending?

Do not travel while an OPT or STEM OPT I-765 is pending. Premium processing does not change that. Talk to your DSO before booking anything.
