Purdue to H-1B: West Lafayette Jobs, Purdue as a Cap-Exempt Employer and the Pull of Indianapolis and Chicago

Purdue files hundreds of H-1B petitions as a cap-exempt university, but no cap-gap protects you, so a West Lafayette job search needs a calendar as well as a list.

Part of our guide to cap-exempt H-1B employers.

Yes, Purdue sponsors H-1B workers, and because it is a university, Purdue is cap-exempt: a department can file an H-1B petition in any month, with no lottery. In the USCIS H-1B Employer Data Hub extract behind our employer pages, Purdue University shows 501 petitions across FY2024 to FY2026 (FY2026 is partial), the third-largest total in Indiana. The catch for Purdue OPT graduates is timing. Cap-exempt petitions get no cap-gap, so to keep working without a break, a Purdue H-1B must be approved and start before your OPT ends. Most private sponsors in West Lafayette, Indianapolis and Chicago are cap-subject, so a first-time H-1B with them goes through the lottery.

Status as of November 1, 2026. In effect: OPT unemployment limits (90 days; 150 in aggregate on STEM OPT), the STEM OPT 180-day automatic extension, and wage-weighted H-1B selection. Blocked: the duration-of-status rule (since 2026-09-14, so the F-1 60-day grace period still applies) and collection of the $100,000 H-1B payment (the proclamation itself stays on paper until 2027-09-21). Proposed: school-paid OPT fees, comments closing 2026-11-09. Not announced: FY2028 H-1B registration.

Does Purdue sponsor H-1B?

Yes. Purdue University sponsors H-1B workers as a cap-exempt institution of higher education, but the hiring department decides job by job; you cannot request sponsorship on your own. Purdue's international office sponsors full-time roles only, and it says administrative and operational support positions, trades, and most (not all) laboratory technician positions are poor fits. Ask the hiring unit whether the role will be sponsored before you accept.

Purdue's International Students and Scholars (ISS) H-1B page, last modified April 15, 2026, is blunt: "Purdue does not sponsor individuals for part-time H-1B employment." It also notes that H-1B is "dual intent" and approved in increments of no more than three years, normally up to six years in total.

The 501 figure counts new-hire and continuing petitions together. Our Indiana employer hub holds 27 employers and 4,383 petitions across the same years, and Purdue ranks third behind two Indianapolis employers, Elevance Health (1,188) and Eli Lilly (597). Each company page splits new hires from renewals, and the split matters: Elevance's count is almost all renewals and transfers, while Purdue's and Lilly's mix new hires with renewals.

Is Purdue cap-exempt for H-1B?

Yes. USCIS's H-1B specialty occupations page says "H-1B workers who are petitioned for or employed at an institution of higher education or its affiliated or related nonprofit entities, a nonprofit research organization, or a government research organization, are not subject to this numerical cap." Purdue, a public university, skips the registration lottery.

That cuts both ways. Our guide to cap-exempt employers as an H-1B bridge covers the strategy; at Purdue, three points matter most:

Since 2025-01-17 the same regulation also lets a nonprofit qualify through a written affiliation agreement with a university when "a fundamental activity" of the nonprofit supports the university's mission, and it can exempt a worker employed elsewhere who spends at least half their time at a qualifying institution. Whether a Purdue-affiliated nonprofit or a Research Park job fits is for that employer's immigration attorney to decide. To watch: "Reforming the H-1B Nonimmigrant Visa Classification Program" (RIN 1615-AD00) has been under OIRA review since 2026-08-24; its agenda abstract mentions "revising eligibility for cap exemptions". No text is public, so today's rules apply.

Purdue H-1B timing: no cap-gap, so plan backward from your EAD

USCIS's cap-gap page says the extension "applies only to beneficiaries of cap-subject H-1B petitions." For a Purdue H-1B, your EAD end date is a hard wall: if the petition is still pending when it passes, you stop working. Our explainer on whether cap-gap applies to cap-exempt H-1Bs covers the edge cases.

A worked timeline (hypothetical December 2026 graduate)

Take a Purdue master's student whose program ends Friday, 2026-12-18. She files her OPT I-765 in January, and USCIS approves an EAD valid 2027-04-01 to 2028-03-31. The OPT you request must begin within 60 days of your program end date, as Purdue's OPT page shows; this April start reflects a later approval. USCIS's processing-times tool showed 80% of F-1 student I-765s done within 5 months on 2026-11-01, so file early. Your own I-20, EAD and DSO govern your dates.

Caption: worked example, rules as of 2026-11.

If a Purdue lab hires her in May 2027, she can work there on OPT while the department prepares the petition, and a filing date months before 2028-03-31 leaves room for a request for evidence. Premium processing for most I-129s is 15 business days, and the I-907 fee has been $2,965 since 2026-03-01 (check the current fee schedule, G-1055); whether a department pays for it is its decision.

Common misconception, then correction. Purdue's OPT page, last modified August 3, 2026, still says that with a cap-gap receipt "your OPT authorization is extended to September 30." Since 2025-01-17, USCIS says cap-gap runs to "April 1 of the fiscal year for which the H-1B status is being requested" (or the petition start date, if earlier). The same page's banner says the duration-of-status rule "becomes effective September 15, 2026"; it has been blocked by a federal court since 2026-09-14 (summary judgment briefed; DHS's appeal pending), so the F-1 60-day grace period still applies. The cap-gap date matters only if you take a cap-subject offer.

Which companies near West Lafayette hire OPT students?

Three groups cover most local options: Purdue itself, Purdue Research Park companies, and new manufacturers such as SK hynix. Purdue's OPT page asks only for a job "directly related to your major field of study" of at least 20 hours a week, so far more employers can hire you on OPT than will sponsor an H-1B. Check sponsorship separately for every name.

Purdue Research Park

The park's company page says it is "Home to more than 250 companies" and spotlights Anduril, Teledyne FLIR, SK hynix, Inari, Wabash and the Young Institute. These are separate employers, mostly private and cap-subject despite the Purdue-linked land. Many file under a headquarters address elsewhere: USCIS's Data Hub notes say the city shown "is not necessarily the beneficiary(ies) work location." To see real West Lafayette worksites, filter DOL's LCA disclosure files on the OFLC performance page (latest: FY2026 Q3) by worksite city.

SK hynix's planned plant

In its April 3, 2024 release, SK hynix announced an estimated $3.87 billion advanced-packaging plant at Purdue Research Park for high-bandwidth memory, planning to "begin mass production in the second half of 2028" with "more than a thousand new jobs to the region." Treat 2028 as a 2024 target and check its newsroom for updates. Our guide to semiconductor jobs and H-1B sponsorship in the CHIPS Act era explains how to ask chip employers about STEM OPT and H-1B early.

Tools Purdue's career center points to

The "Job Search in U.S." tab of Purdue's Center for Career Opportunities international page lists GoinGlobal's H-1B and OPT directory, E-Verify search, the USCIS Data Hub, and Purdue International Graduate Job Outcomes, which it says to filter by Residency set to "International" to see where international graduates landed. Our walkthrough on finding OPT-friendly employers turns those sources into a verified list.

For context, fall 2026 campus reports put Purdue's international undergraduates at 3,754 (from 4,045) and its international graduate students at 4,941 (from 5,308), and Higher Ed Dive reported a 15.6% international drop at Indiana University. Fewer classmates does not change which employers sponsor.

How do I check whether a Purdue Research Park company uses E-Verify?

Search the employer in the E-Verify Employer Search tool, then confirm with HR before you accept. It matters for STEM OPT: USCIS's STEM OPT page says the employer must "Be enrolled in E-Verify, as evidenced by either a valid E-Verify company identification number" or an agent's client number.

  1. Get the legal entity name from your offer letter; startups often hire under a different name than their brand.
  2. Search that name and any brand name in the E-Verify Employer Search tool, which shows a DBA only if the employer gave it at enrollment.
  3. Read the account status (enrolled or terminated) and hiring-site states; the tool cautions that a listing "does not necessarily mean that all of the hiring sites are enrolled in E-Verify."
  4. Ask HR for the E-Verify company identification number for Form I-983, the STEM OPT training plan.
  5. Submit the I-983 through myISS. Purdue's STEM OPT page says: "You do not send your Form I-983 to USCIS."
  6. Report employer and address changes in myISS within 10 days.

One timing caveat: the stopgap funding law extends E-Verify only through 2026-12-11 (CRS), and E-Verify went offline during the 2025 shutdown. For a mid-December STEM OPT start, ask HR how it would handle new-hire E-Verify cases if Congress has not passed funding by then.

Should Purdue graduates move to Indianapolis or Chicago for jobs?

Move when your target employers, interviews and offers are there, not before. Indianapolis is about 65 miles down I-65, workable for hybrid roles; Chicago is more than two hours away and usually means relocating. Either way, your OPT unemployment counter keeps running: 90 days on post-completion OPT, 150 in aggregate on STEM OPT.

Caption: decision table, rules as of 2026-11. Exempt status is decided employer by employer.

Our Indiana H-1B guide and Chicago H-1B job market guide cover those employers. Three mechanics move with you. Purdue's OPT page allows remote work: if your job is 100% remote, you "report the address where you work remotely, such as your home address." Before filing an H-1B petition, employers "must submit a Labor Condition Application" to the Department of Labor, and the LCA is tied to the worksite, so tell the employer's attorney before you move or go remote. And the weighted selection rule ranks a registration by the OEWS wage level its salary reaches, which "necessarily takes into account the area of intended employment." In our reading, a bigger Chicago salary does not automatically improve your odds, because it is measured against Chicago pay.

The $100,000 payment is not being collected as of November 1, 2026, though the USCIS I-129 page says DHS still plans to collect it if the court order is lifted. Change-of-status petitions USCIS grants inside the US were never covered, the usual path for an OPT graduate already here; a denied change of status or a consular-processing petition would be, if collection resumed. The fee did hit university hiring from abroad: a CRS Insight (2026-10-14) found initial H-1B petitions for consular processing from cap-exempt employers fell 91% in the fee's first eight months.

How we checked this: on November 1-2, 2026 we read the USCIS, Study in the States, E-Verify and DOL pages above, the Federal Register and CRS documents, Purdue's ISS, CCO and Research Park pages, and SK hynix's 2024 release, and pulled Purdue, Elevance Health and Eli Lilly from the Data Hub extract behind our employer pages. Quotes from Purdue pages carry their last-modified dates because those pages change.

This is general information, not legal or tax advice; your own I-20, EAD, I-94 and notices govern, so take OPT, STEM OPT and SEVIS questions to a Purdue ISS advisor (your DSO), and petition, cap-exemption or status strategy to a licensed immigration attorney.
